What we need

As long as we keep playing this way, we need an assassin. Somebody who can hit that dagger. Gatens isn't the guy for that (how do you miss that wide open look?). I don't care if this mystery player is as one-dimensional as Bawinkel, if he can knock down the big shot from out there with consistency, we need him. I'm getting sick of watching the shot clang off the iron when it really counts. Get somebody who can shoot threes that has Cartwright's killer instinct.

I agree. And until we get that player, I'd like to see us attack down low with Basabe when the game is on the line.

Hopefully JO is as good of a shooter as advertised. If Marble develops an outside shot he could be that guy, he seems unfazed by any situation.

Which is why I'd like to see him stay in the starting lineup. Even if he misses a few shots, he still plays with a lot of confidence. Unlike May right now, who, if he misses his first shot, is not going to do much of anything offensively for the rest of the game.

Does anyone have a link to JO's stats this year. Guys that are dead on sharpshooters in college usually have the stats to prove it in high school, especially if they are Ogelsby's height.

We can always go to Brommers sweet baby j.

I'm still waitin for that address pal. :)

I know Caff likes to put the game in his point guards hands at the end of games. He did the same thing at Sienna. So I probably shouldn't even question his philosophy on this. It's just that Basabe is the player I have the most confidence in on this team. And it's not even close.

So close, but yet so far. A clutch scorer, help at the point, and some size. 3 players could turn this club into an NCAA team next year. Too bad Cole graduates.

Here's his numbers from quikstats:

71 of 179 from beyond the arc (39.7%)
158 of 351 overall (45%)
74 of 91 from the line (81.3%)

I say get as many players as you can to commit, even if it means making current players move on. These are desperate times, they call for desperate measures. While I would normally not advocate this kind of cut-throat attitude. It is what is needed know. I would say that no less than two current players that will be on next year's roster need to be gone.

In other words, Gatens redux. Sorry guys, but that doesn't look like the answer.

I won't go quite that far just yet, though that thought crossed my mind as well.

I'm not so much concerned with how many threes a guy hits, more so with WHEN they hit them. If Oglesby doesn't hit 45% on his threes, I wouldn't care that much. As long as he had the fearless, cold-blooded mentality needed to hit the big one at the end. We've been in a lot of games as is. And we have a couple decent shooters, but none seem to have the right mindset to hit the big shot.

J.J. Redick hit on 40.6% of his threes for his career. His senior year was his best at 42.1%.

What did I say? College sharpshooters show it in high school. What did Redick shoot in high school? 44%. That is for his career, including as an underclassman. You can expect about a five percent dropoff when these get to college, which moved Redick down to 39%, which he eventually got back up to 42%. So for Josh that would be about 34%, which is about Gaten's average. That is all I am saying. That being said, I think Ogelsby will be able to score at Iowa. I just don't know if he is going to be the assassin the team needs.

Like I said, if he shoots about the same percentage as Gatens, I'd be okay with that, provided he hits them when it really counts. Gatens seems to almost be even money to miss in the clutch.

Honestly, I don't think Iowa is that desperate. Given Iowa's recent history of defections/transfers and now a new coach, I don't think that is the best message to send at this point, especially when everyone can see the progress of the team. Players everyone wants to get rid of will be gone soon enough (Gatens, Brommer, Archie, all are Jr's). With the "lack" of talent Iowa has they seem to have improved into an okay basketball team. The last three losses have been a combined 8 pts, I believe and Iowa had chances, real chances to win all three. Iowa has played with every team at least once and held some good leads against teams. Wanting to ship current players off with no real plan to bring in other players, is not a good thing. Remeber this is only year one and the progress is evident. Give the staff and roster more time to develop. Iowa's 2010 class was ranked 8th, I believe, but I think reality tells me that they have been the No. 2 class in production, behind only Ohio State. Yes Iowa has a depth issue, but sending upperclassmen packing is not going to help the program move forward. Iowa can only move forward if they have roster stability and the staff can continue to develop players and continue to get the production out of players that on paper are not supposed to perform this well (Basabe/Cartwright).

Oglesby will want that shot next year. His stats are skewed because him and Washpun are Wash's only options on offense. He is forced to take shots he shouldn't just to keep his team in the game at times. When he is just another guy on this team he will thrive knocking down shots, pressure or not. I'm excited to see him play the next 4 years. And those who say he is Gatens 2.0 clearly have never seen him play. He will be the best passer on the team next year hands down. He also can break down his man and get to the lane or get separation for a shot. Something Gatens and May cannot do if their life depended on it. He may not have the bulk that gatens did as a HS Sr. but he is all of 6'6" and is deceptively athletic. I think he'll be huge for us next year going forward.
