What We Learned: Hawkeye Coordinators Press Conference

Kirk is a system/detail guy. Everything needs to be in place, the plan is painfully evaluated, put in place, coached. Kirk and son seem to be rendered ineffective as the game progresses, leading to their weakness...molasses brain in the midst of the game, needing to tweak, make changes, think on the fly, but unable to. The leadership reverts to frozen brain, falling back on the "plan" that is now, in the moment out of date. This is especially evident, over and over, when Iowa is facing a team equal to or better than they are: Wisconsin, Stanford, Ohio State, etc. The Kirk way of planning and sticking to a plan works best vs Purdue/Illinois/Minnesota where Iowa can implement a plan and stick to it.

You need to be flexible, creative, unpredictable to get to that higher level. Our coaches remain stuck in the mud even as the game (and opportunities) unfold around them at a hectic pace.

7-5, 8-4 coaching = Longevity, $$$, "Legacy," Greasing the wheels for a couple more decades of Kirk Ball, gifted to son.

(Yes, I know Iowa beat Ohio State last year)

Parker's explanation on why Epenesa wasn't playing more was just lame. I understood his reasoning....last year, but this year; no. He has two good seniors playing in front of him, but I saw Epenesa take the starting left tackle and shove him 10 feet back into the QB. A Wisconsin left tackle, not an ISU kid, or UNI. Prior to that he went around him like an NFL all pro against a junior high kid. "Still learning the game", is a BS explanation for blind loyalty to a couple of seniors. And Parker said, 'if he were in there more, would he be as productive?" I don't know, let's find out, why wait 'til his junior year.

I wonder if any of the coaching staff ever read any of our posts? If so, here’s a motto they should put on their wall; “Risk is the price you pay for opportunity.”

That's funny. Just had an image of Frankenstein (BF) stalking the sideline having temper tantrums.
You have to at least admit he doesn't have your typical OC temperment.

I'm just along for the ride folks. I can understand being upset after a big loss, but I'm not going to sit here on an internet forum lobbying for a new coaching staff. It's an exercise in futility at best, and looks like a good way to drive everyone nuts, especially yourselves.

I wasn't thrilled at the choice of Brian Ferentz as offensive coordinator, due to lack of experience and the inevitable charges of nepotism when things don't go well. I understand that quite a few people that have worked with Brian Ferentz think he has a bright future in coaching, but riding in on his father's coat tales is a problematic arrangement they may live to regret. My impression is that Kirk is a straight up guy that means well, but can be pretty rigid in his thinking and may also be a little naive about how nasty the politics surrounding a public position can get.

Anthony Nelson is a junior.
Rob I didn't watch or read the transcripts Did Parker or Kirk say anything about Amani Jones? Before the year started the coaches made it sound like he was a star in the making and now no mention. Has it been established that he doesn't have the football savy to play ML? He even had a couple of penalties on special teams. Too bad We could use an athlete at ML that can run

This is from Phil Parker yesterday:

Q. Early in the spring Amani Jones seemed to have a lot of equity in the program as a starter. He was mentioned throughout the spring, certainly in the summer. Then within a couple series of the first game he was pulled and Jack Hockaday was in. Was it anything that you anticipated that he might struggle with as far as whether it was just recognition or being in the right place at the right time? I mean, what happened?

PHIL PARKER: Amani Jones is still an important part of our program. He’s done a great job in the special teams, but he’s also been a great leader. When we get in together and run the field and we’re on the sideline at a timeout or anything, the enthusiasm and the energy that he brings to the guys on the field that are actually playing is a positive.

Yeah, so there’s been sometimes that we say, hey, we’d like to be a little bit better in this, a little bit better in that. But everybody could say that about every position. It’s just right now we feel that Jack (Hockaday) is the best guy that can help us move forward and have a chance to win every game. Not saying that Amani won’t get back in there, I think he has a lot of upside and we like his energy, and we like the way he can find the ball. Sometimes we’re going to have to put him in there and we have to live with some mistakes that goes on. But we’re very pleased with the way he’s handled the situation and how positive he’s been.

Yes, my mistake. But my point still stands, the wait your turn BS should not apply in Epenesa's case. He is special, and the failure to recognize that is a failure of coaching.

I don't think they have any doubt that he is special. Phil has put in plenty of younger players over older players in on defense. Maybe there are things that Parker hesse does better than AJ at this point and that is why he gets more snaps. Maybe AJ's motor isnt there to go longer yet... just because a guy looks like an absolute specimen doesn't mean his endurance is through the roof... lots of factors could be keeping eppy off the field. Phil doing it to to keep his defense worse and 1 older player happy does not sound like the reason. Do you think the other players would be happy if a better player was riding the bench more than he should? Very hard to believe Phil Parker would do that. And if you don't think Parker Hesse is very good in his own right... your not watching closely enough

Literally read the transcript and then came here to post this. What a dumbass. That's literally the definition of second guessing.
No it's not. Like others have said, he is saying he doesn't have indecision or second guessing. But sure, like everyone hindsight is 20/20.

No I acknowledged that both Hesse and Nelson are good, Hesse more so than Nelson. But I do think Eppy is next level good. It is a good problem to have, but put him in more.

The lack of adaptability was shown to me in the 2011 bowl game against OSU

We are in the redzone, possibly within the 10 yard line.

Marvin McNutt is lined out wide (as normal) and has NO ONE COVERING HIM. JVB lines up under center and doesn't even look over the field. McNutt is screaming and waving his hands, and nothing. We line up, and we will run the play that is called.

Someone like Tate or CJB probably throw it over there right away, and you know Kirk would be pissed. JVB seemed to be more of a straight arrow than those two.

But that one play always stood out to me as Iowa sticking to their plan no matter what.

I guess I will go back to not reading these press conference transcripts or listening to radio call in shows etc. Just so frustrating and head scratching. I realize most football coaches aren't the most articulate guys but what the heck is Woods referring to when he used the word "equity" to describe Groeneweg's relationship with his teammates. Not clear if that first came from the reporter or Woods? I suspect he meant to use another word but what the heck is he saying? That his teammates respect him? That is great and the way it should be, but put the most capable guy back there.

He seems to really be stumbling with his answer. Maybe he believes there should be more competition in that position but is being overruled?

How has he built that kind of equity in your program just two years, really one year now as a player? Was it just the way he worked last year when he came in on the scout team?

LEVAR WOODS: Kyle’s not the only returner we have. I think we have some good, capable returners. But talking about him specifically, I think he’s built equity with his teammates and how he works and how he approaches everything and the way he goes about his business.

Again, you mentioned last year on scout team, I think it started there for him, and then progressed kind of going forward this way.

Again, this isn’t just about one person. Everyone’s involved. Everyone’s out there. There are other guys that we have that can return the ball, and think that the unit itself in general, I think we’re very, very close to being a good unit, being a dangerous unit, to a play here, a block there, communication here or there away from being a really good unit. We keep working every single day, and that was a point of emphasis for us today in practice. So keep working on it from here on out.

So you’ve never heard someone answering a question using the same words as the person that asked the question. Maybe you should ask the reporter what he meant by equity.

I understood him. KG has built up trust. He’s not lost the trust of the coaches or players after one fumble caused by a guy’s butt who was blocked out of his lane

G and all the ST has looked better in 4 games than all of last season put together.
