What was Fran thinking?

what better time to give a kid time to work on some things you can't duplicate in practice,
you get live action on tape to break down, and use to teach players, and as the broadcasters stated, it shows the coach if you can maintain a high level for the whole game. whether you are up 1 or 40 or down 1
or down 40, even ingram got 22 minutes of playing time after getting 1 minute in the last 3 games combined. each time on the floor everybody improves and this type of game allows Fran to iron out the wrinkles just in time for BT play

I think this who the thread was for! #knowledge

How does it help Gabe's game to run with Rickert, Stokes, and Denning? How does it help his game to have him dominate over-matched players? Gabe is going to be a BIG piece of the puzzle come BoneG season. He is pretty much co-starter at center. He needs to be playing meaningful minutes with Gesell, Marble, and White, not garbage minutes with the Lord of the Rings crew where he can risk injury.

I am pretty sure Rickert, Stokes and Denning were not in the Lord of the Rings. I could be wrong, but I am about 83.76% sure they weren't.

I have two serious problems with the way he coached this game tonight. One, when the game was well in hand with a 40 point lead in the 2nd half, why did he still have Gabe Olesani out there? Do you really want to risk injury to a guy like that just so he can pad his stats against a hapless team? What good is it having him play with Rickert, Dennings, and Stokes? Why do they need the confidence? Two, it was pretty classless of Fran to keep Gabe out there when we were dominating like that. Yeah, he pumped up what was left in the crowd with his blocks, but did we really need to humiliate SC St like that? Steve Alford was embarrassed by that behavior.

Exactly! Except it isn't funny or well played.

It is adolescent and borderline bullying.

Maybe I am making this bigger than it needs to be but really do you guys enjoy people responding to him just to get trolled? How exactly is that different from bullying someone?

Maybe I am just sick of "teh ghost" and what he represents.

I am done and will step down from my little soapbox.

Is this "Reverse Trolling"? If so, you nailed it, my friend. Well played, Triton.

Ummmm doesn’t Gabe only have 4 years of basketball experience ever? Two in high school two in college?

Yeah I am going to be ok with Fran keeping him in for the experience. I have more time on court then Gabe does and I stopped playing in 8th grade!

I can see giving Ingram minutes as he probably will not be getting many minutes once conference play starts. But leaving a valuable player out there during garbage minutes is unnecessary. Olaseni is going to have a huge role when conference play starts, it seems pointless to leave him out there during garbage time to get hurt.

Agree. Sending Gabe out to play garbage time against those scrubs for "game experience" is like telling Picasso he needs more drawing experience then forcing him to play Pictionary.

Fran answered this question in the post game presser...

Justin VanStorminspank: Why did you leave Gabe on the floor when it appeared the game was well in hand?

Fran: Well, I almost took him out and that's when Sherman ran up to me and said,"Hold up coach! We need to give Ghost some troll bait or his night and ours, will be ruined!". It was a "no brainer" to leave him in after that. I haven't seen Sherm run that fast since we did a "dine and dash" in Michigan while recruiting Dev!

(audible laughter)

Pretty obvious that Gabe was out there to try to help Iowa beat SCS by more than Missouri did. Fran is usually saving Gabe though as Jon posted in the other thread here are the MPG leaders:

Marble: 31.5
White: 26.8
Gesell: 25.1
May: 17.2
Basabe: 17.0
Woodbury: 16.9
Clemmons: 16.9
Oglesby: 16.3
McCabe: 15.8

McCabe is getting work in while Gabe is getting rest...

I know this was a thread just to poke the bear (i.e. herby) but lets be honest the whole game was garbage minutes. Not a single Iowa player that played didn't play garbage time. Think about the fact that Iowa scored 90 points and Marble was the only player with more than 10 points. Ingram and Olaseni got valuable court time because both will play very little once conference time starts. We will be looking at a 8-9 man rotation for conference. Gabe will play against a few teams because of fouls and size but this was important time for him and Ingram.

The followup was good, too:

Justin VanStorminspank: I'm a mod. Did you know I'm a mod?

Fran: Can you get Jon "Diesel" Miller to sign my laptop?

Justin VanStorminspank: Let's talk about beer.
