What Seniors Will Get Drafted?

I guess the NFL scout knows more than I do. :)

Hah, I wouldn't go that far. Scouting evals/opinions are nothing more than an educated guess. I'm guessing NFL scout grades on Boffeli will range from late round pick to a camp only guy. He would fit best in a zone heavy scheme, much like Vandervelde & Gettis. For Boffeli to make an NFL roster he'll need to progress some yet, and get stronger in the lower body. It's just my guess that he will.

Hawkeyegamefilm... I'm curious if you see all three linebackers being drafted and if so what order? Who do you think has the most value?

In my opinion, all three have great intangibles. Kirksey is more capable against the pass, Hitchens is better against the run, and Morris is sort of a solid mix of both. For that reason and simply because he has better size I think Morris would be the earliest pick. I have no idea what round he's being projected at though.

Think you're probably right about Morris. He's been healthy this year and has played very well.

I see Morris as a back-up type MLB prospect, probably a later round value, 5th-6th. Both Kirksey and Hitchens project to be WLB's in the NFL. Not sure either has played consistent enough this year to earn a draftable grade though. I like Kirksey's potential a lot but he hasn't developed the POA/physicality you want to see from a NFL LB who plays in the box. Hitchens has the physicality/POA skills but seems to have issues w/instincts and ability in pass coverage. At worst both are will be PFA's who get a shot at making a roster on their special teams ability. All 3 guys have top intangibles; very good work ethics and great character guys too.

This is just stupid and uncalled for.

Actually, I could see Shumpert getting a CFL or Arena tryout. But probably more a "semi-pro" start, which is a tough way to live AND pay the bills.

He has good speed and size. He has been getting open. The difference is now he's also catching the ball. If it's strictly a "mental" thing, he needs to maintain that to next level.

My guess, though, is that he will pursue an alternate career.

CJ will be better in the NFL than he is in college. You can't even look at receivers in the NFL and he will be a matchup nightmare over the middle where he doesn't have to worry about getting his head taken off.

Thanks for the insight. I'm always overly optimistic and all three are such good kids that I'm going to be rooting for them to earn spots. Because of their work ethic and character I think they could all make great special teams contributions. Being that Morris is an Iowa boy I'm hoping he takes the steps necessary to earn a starting role at some point in his career. It's always neat to have a young man like him represent the state. He's a great role model for high school football players in Iowa.

Kirksey and Hitchens look like tweeners to me. Neither guy is an edge pass rusher; if they make it, it will have to be as a guy who can cover guys in the slot, backs out of the backfield. Both players at best are package players/ special team guys.

CJF will probably be a better pro than college guy.....He is a decent blocker now, which at least will get him on the field...Most NFL OC(s) would at least attempt to get him the ball on seam routes down the middle.

Any chance a team tries him at safety or hybrid LB/S?
Definitely a possibility if he lands in a system where the DC is a flexible guy who likes to get creative. I can't see a team drafting a guy without a solid position in mind though, he'll have to earn a roster spot based on ST ability and being a solid backup WLB.

Gamefilm,
Not to hijack this thread as we are talking about seniors, but where is Scherff grading out at? If he's a mid to late 1st round pick, do you see him sticking around for his senior year? Appreciate your insight.

Thanks for the correction, my point is Tyler Sash was a helluva safety and he didn't make a roster this year. It's very hard to make it in the NFL.

I agree with your overall point. Tanner may get a camp invite, but I'd be shocked if he made a roster.

Scherff has put some very good efforts on tape vs Mich St & OSU; most teams will likely see him as mid-late 1st round value. Guessing he'll line up at RT in the NFL; could end up at OG as well. Either way I think he'll be a starter early on in his career.

If I was advising him, I would tell him the choices are this:

1) Go to the draft this year and you are likely a 1st round pick, and get the financial security that goes with it. You'd be leaving school early & it's a big life change to jump to the NFL. You'll be in a new city, possibly far from home and family, and will largely be on your own.

2) You stay another year, polish your game, and improve technically. You also finish school. You can get an insurance policy and protect yourself against the possibility of injury during your SR year.

Honestly those are both pretty good options. I've met Brandon and talked to him numerous times the last couple years. My impression was he's a mature, responsible kid off the field and is ready to make the jump to the NFL. Ultimately it's up to him though.

Most Iowa offensive linemen come into the NFL quite polished. Iowa does a good job of getting the most of them, we rarely have athletic freaks with raw talent we didn't tap into. I don't see the benefit of him staying another year. Rookie deals are low value even at the top now days so if you can get drafted in the 1st, take the money now and get a huge payday on your 2nd contract.

It would probably be in Brandon's best interest to go pro. But if he stays, he'll get to go 10-2 next year. :)

Miller is listed as the 20th top FS prospect for 2014 by nfldraftscout.com he could work his way up.

Don't count him out. He already has proven to be a hard worker that can surprise people. He unexpectedly worked his way into a Big 10 scholarship, then worked his way inti being a 3 year starter. He may have what it takes to surprise people again.

I've never seen the dominance everybody else sees in Scherff. Until this year he never seemed to stay on the field for long without getting hurt and he was far from dominant when he was playing. This year he has been good to very good. But just don't get the dominance and first round pick talk. Will gladly admit that I'm virtually always wrong with projections re pro potential. Certainly rooting for him and happy to be wrong again.
