What makes Iowa offense so predictable?

I was working in the kitchen when I heard this, so I am not sure if I caught it correctly, but I thought after an Iowa throwaway out-of-bounds Helfrich said, "That was Iowa's bread and butter, last year." Perhaps not a good sign that our bread and butter is throwing the ball away.

During the covid season and Tyler Goodsen was the primary RB, Iowa used the wildcat play with him with some success. I don't think it has been seen since that year. With McNamara inability to run, no matter what the down and distance is, the OC might want to dust off the plays from 2020 and give it a try. Saturday every offensive series was very predictable.

Probably a lot of things Iowa didn't show Saturday.

Here is an absolute terrific podcast by Joel Klatt explaining on teams needing to adapt in college football. He really uses Clemson as an example but I think there are many parallels Iowa is dealing with. He mentions Nebraska and Texas as well.

one aspect of this KF style of play that isn't discussed much is the attractability of it. It lowers the team's national profile and makes recruiting more difficult. The most extreeme example is the Coach Prime effect...where kids want to go there, and people want to watch them play and the style of play if worth tuning in for. Yes he wants to win just as bad as KF.

Coach Prime understands, and many others understand that HOW you win matters.

Iowa is especially unattractive fir WR's. But NIL will fix that. I am sure it helped give Kaleb Brown a little incentive to come to Iowa. I am sure it will help persuade other guys that are sitting on the fence.

I really hope we integrate Brown into the O.... He played 20 something snaps I think I saw last week with 2 targets. There's multiple reasons for doing so. For one he's talented and he'd help the O. For another it'll make him want to stick around. He's going to want to be the man next yr and be the # 1 WR. But if he's just out there running wind sprints all game and blocking the whole time he could just as easily have one eye on the portal again. Give him a reason to want to stay

"You gotta block son, to get the rock, here at IA"

Why is that crazy? It was in fact the 4th or 5th most watched game. End of story. Duh.
To be fair I am sure that some of those watching are aware of Brian’s requirement to average 25 points a game or the axe will fall. Seriously why would fans be interested in Iowa vrs Iowa state outside of the state of Iowa and the bordering states surrounding the state of Iowa?

I will argue to my dying breath, that since I was introduced to Iowa and Iowa football in 1989, that on the whole, Iowa football has punched above it's weight class in every possible way for 34 years (TV viewing, $$, performance/success, Div 1 relevance). I also know that they did the same in preceding years under Hayden. Probably the only way they've not punched above their weight class is in recruiting. I would say they are generally fighting for guys in their own weight class there, and sometimes score an upset. So when they continually punch above their weight class, I'm even more appreciative.

FFS...I'm from STL, I could have gone to Mizzou. Or KU. Or Illinois. Or Lindenwood. I did alright in high school and probably could have even gotten in to Washington University. I'll take my 34 years with the Hawkeyes over any of that that any day. Also, Iowa....the state. It really is great. And I'm glad I spent time there. I'm glad I moved there as soon as I could after college. Met my wife there. Had two children born there. Wish I could have stayed, but moved back to attend the family business.

Fun fact: I believe the last time Nile Kinnick appeared (not as a player) at an Iowa football game, the Hawkeyes were playing Washington University.

I don’t know why. But they did.
