What is "wrong" with the program

Kurt wrestled 197 in college. i promise you he is wrestling anyone in that room from probably 174- Hwt.
Also our recruiting of bigger guys has been good the last few years. telford was a top recruit same w/ Brooks, Burak, and Meyers for this year. that's basically 174-Hwt for the next 3-4 years. Honestly I don't know how Backes does in the room working with the guys but i think he's the easy guy to throw under the bus cuz he's not an 'iowa guy.' just my opinion

I think Backes has done a fantastic job and is a major reason for the improvement of our big guys and signing some of the top upper weight recruits with Telford and now Brooks and Burak. My comment insinuating he might be a little light to really push the big boys was specifically in reference to heavyweight. Backes did wrestle 197 but I don't think he would have to cut much if any today to make that and I'm just not sure how realistic of a look he can give Telford in preparation against larger heavies that are strong as a bull and have the weight to go along with it. With Blake graduating this year and no real heavies other than Telford next year, he's going to need a good partner just to get a good wrestling workout. I think Backes will give him all he can handle, just not sure he can replicate the same look as a Nelson from Minnesota for example. I by no means think Backes should be let go. I think he's perfect for 174-197 and technique advice for Heavyweight. I just wish there was an additional heavyweight coach to wrestle live and push Telford.

If so, it wasn't eight, it was seven. You get a point for finishing seventh but you don't get the extra half a point. I see where your coming from because the 133 and 141# for PennSt will have bad seeds. I do think the Dardanes kid will score some points for Minnesota at 133 but not all american.;)

Exactly why I think Cael is about to go on a "Gable run"

compare wrestling recruits to football recruits cept there are only 9 scholys to give out what the hawks have been able to accomplish in years past is remarkable and to be contending for years to come will prove why brands and co are the best out there...penn state will fizzle once ppl realize they are only going to penn state because of caels accomplishments not because he is a good coach

I agree. Penn State has some pretty good momentum right now but that's not guaranteed to continue indefinitely. Cael's coming off an incredible collegiate and Olympic career so his success may be a little more recent and fresh in recruits minds since many watched first hand his success. That momentum and "star power" some recruits might associate him with will fade and guys will be looking more at how he is as a coach and how he can develop his recruits. He struck gold with some young phenoms that frankly could probably be top 3 with any coach in their corner and is experiencing the resulting success as a team. There's no doubt in my mind Iowa has the best coaching staff at developing wrestlers and will always be contending for titles because of it. It seems championships are more cyclical and Penn State is having their time. With the core Iowa has and the recruits they're bringing in, I think they'll regain the thrown very soon if not this year.

But I mean Ferentz sells "Come to Iowa I will develop you into a chance to make millions at the next level"

Wrestling really doesn't have that to sell...I mean you can go to the olympics sure...or MMA or something I guess....but there really is no "next level" is there?

I mean might Cael's accomplishments be enough to lure recruits? You get enough studs you will win titles...success breeds success.

May be wrong, but I believe Iowa has the
#1 recruiting class do far this year.

T.O.M. has Lehigh as #1 and Iowa #2 but with the amount of scholarship money I'm speculating they had available based on who is graduating, I think Iowa put together a perfect class based on their needs. If they could still add another good heavyweight late, it'd be icing on the cake!

iowa has 4 wrestlers in the overall top 25 committed and penn state has one its a great recruiting class as far as nationally ranked wrestlers

McD - to seed

Marion - above seed

Telford - above seed

Pretty good BT tourney but you can't have two weights with nothing.

can't stop picturing a byers in there...i need to get that out of my head lol!

Agreed. #3 in the Nation. I believe we'd be favored with him. And who knows what Carew or Ballwegs could have done. I know when we had Carew active and byers committed we were ranked #1.

Hawkforce - did you just say Cael is going on a "Gable run"? That is the most absurd thing I've ever heard on Hawkeyenation.com. WOW!

PSU had two who finished 7th according to the Purdue site. I used the tournament guide from BHGP where they seventh gets 4 points.

Exactly why I think Cael is about to go on a "Gable run"

There are a ton of D1 colleges around the Penn area, the good kids that aren't great can still go to a D1 college. The good not great kids from Iowa stick around and wrestle D3.
