What is an appropriate punishment for O$U

I say:

Retroactively:
vacate all wins in which athletes who should have been ineligible competed.

Prospectively:
Take one scholarship away for each athlete found to have sold or traded their merchandise. The scholarship should be lost for four years. (28 scholarships lost for 4 years?) The scholarship cuts are effective the 2012-2013 season and any player who wants to transfer out may do so without sitting out a year.

No post-season games for a number of years equal to the years in which ineligible athletes competed (9 years?)

All current players who sold or traded merchandise are immediately ineligible for all NCAA competition.

University must sever all ties with boosters who helped to corrupt the program as well as send a letter to all donors naming those boosters who are banned from O$U functions.

O$U places immediate ban on tatoos for its student athletes.

Gene Smith and O$U compliance department cited for willful negligence.

any other ideass?

I kinda like what you did there. Don't give them the actual Death Penalty, just what would effectively be a Death Penalty. Not bad.

When is the next time the Big Ten will be negotiating material TV contract rights? I'd say crush the program until then, and with some lead time before the new contract is negotiated, let them get good again to help boost the value of the contract.

Also, no need to retroactively gut every season, just hold a special ceremony wherein all of the captains of OSU teams for the past 9 seasons have to drive up to the Big House and as a group change the record book giving Michigan a win in each game bince say 2002 and require that ceremony to be broadcast on all BTN feeds in the State of Ohio 24/7 until the 2011 season kicks off.

Add to that - make them turn in their gold pants trinket - for those who still own them. Better yet - for those who don't make them reveal who they sold it to.

JT banned from coaching in the NCAA at any level for 10 yrs.

There hows that?

Until you start turning the scope of cheating against the institutions you will continue to have issues. USC's slap on the only emboldens other cheaters.

They need to lose schollys and Post season play for AT LEAST 4 years. Not ever being able to play in a bowl game will be a deterrent to recruits. Having a 2 year ban isn't.

I think they should get a USC like scholarship reduction but allowed to play in bowls.

If OSU can't play in bowls it will be a disaster for the B10. They will still win the conference even with the punishments from time to time and the conference has to send their "paper" Leaders rep to the B10 Championship Game against the Legends divison winner. No matter who wins they will not be viewed as a legit champion.

Couldn't agree with you more, however that is the exact problem. What it does to the Big Ten aside, OSU needs to be punished whether or not it hurts the conference. That is part of the problem with the NCAA. Had Auburn not been making a run at the NC you can guarantee that they'd have sidelined Newton, but instead they play political and back off because it might not be beneficial to college football.

OSU needs to be severly punished regardless what it does to the conference, because if they aren't then it only encourages the Tressel's of college football to completely disregard the rules and run these corrupt programs.

They should and will receive a punishment not quite as bad as USC's.

I think it will be a little worst than USC. More bad news will be coming. Everybody and their dog is in Columbus. They're kicking over rocks and all the scum bugs are running. This isn't over yet. Some people love kicking a dog when he's down.

If it isn't worse than USC, considering the length of time during which this stuff occurred and number of players involved, then everybody (not just the SEC) will be emboldened.

There's only one possible course of action here:

Vacating titles and wins means nothing. Who really cares if they lose some game that was played 8 yrs ago? It doesn't change the season or the memories from that year.

If I were me making the decisions I would place a 3 yr post-season ban AND force fOSU to forfeit any shared income that would have been received during those 3 yrs. In addition, they will lose ALL income derived from their television contracts for football (BTN, ESPN, et al). Those two will cost the program tens of MILLIONS per year.

Allow any player the opportunity to transfer without sitting out a year with one caveat. If any player is known to have or can be proven to have taken part in any rules violations then they must follow the normal transfer rules. They made their bed.

Let me start by saying that I think what Jim Tressel did is deplorable and he should have been fired when it was found out he lied. That being said, there is currently too much unknown to go spouting off how much punishment OSU should get. If all this car stuff turns out to be nothing (highly unlikely though), then OSU will likely get off fairly light. I mean all that was going to happen was a 5 game suspension. Players selling memorabilia is a major violation, but hardly worthy of a 9 year bowl ban as the OP suggested, ridiculous. I think they should be banned from playing for the Big Ten title this year for starters regardless. Now, if these other allegations prove to be true, then I would agree with a punishment in line with what USC got. Ask yourself this question, if Iowa has been caught doing the same thing would you really say a 4 to up to 9 year bowl ban would be fair? Not a chance. I don't know if some of you are joking or not, but at best you just sound silly. A loss in scholarships and a 2 year post season ban is likely the worst case scenario for OSU when you look at it logically. Other people calling for them to give up shared income, etc. When has that ever happened before? I really doubt the NCAA is going to make up new punishments here. The punishment will be in line with historical punishments and again will include primarily loss of scholarships and post season bans.

OSU does not deserve as harsh or harsher penalties than USC got. Selling merchandise and covering up knowledge vs. providing multi-million dollar homes for families and having the media ignore it?

I agree, and not. They should get nothing worse than anyone else got. We try and think, as a conf. we are the best. As such we should not be looking to self impose our own judgements onto OH St, yet say they should not get any worse than the next guy. As a fan, it's kinda like eat my &^&%$# you &&^%% @#$%^&, you barely escape us by #$%^& cheating.
