2 D Ends tied for the lead in sacks, 2 NFL tight ends, #9 ranked defense, and the winningest coach in Iowa history= 8 wins and 4th place in the B1G West.

Iowa beat your pre-season prediction, I assumed this would answer your question. I predicted them at 9 and this fact pisses me off.

Then, there's this info:

Iowa’s defense and special teams accounted for 48 total points, or roughly 4 per game (6 TDs & 3 safeties).

Iowa’s defense set up the offense for many easy scoring drives. Iowa had a ridiculous 13 scoring drives of under 40 yards (8 TDs & 5 FGs). That’s another 71 points or nearly 6 points per game.

All of this is to say that Iowa’s defense as we all witnessed was very good this year. In a normal year you may get a few non offensive TDs, but 6 is quite a lot. You will get some short scoring drives, but our defense set up our offense time and time again. The offense, under the leadership of BF, still has a very long way to go.

Just having the accolades and stats for these two D ends should have resulted in one of those "special" seasons. If that effective with sacks, one can presume they were also effective in the run stop game which should have resulted in more wins. But, it is just the way the ball bounces every once-in-awhile.

Is Iowa the best 4 loss team in the nation?

Iowa went 2-4 in tightly contested games. One of the losses on the special teams, one of the losses on the offense, one of the losses on the defense, and one of the losses on the coaches.

Really wish it was 10-2, but it is what is it, can't really expect to win all 6 close games you are in, this wan't a talented enough team to pull that off, winning all close games.

Iowa finished tied for 2nd in the West, not 4th. Iowa was 5-4 in conference games, tied with Wisconsin and Purdue. Yes, we lost to those two teams, but we defeated Minnesota, and the Gophers defeated Wisconsin and Purdue.

What happened is that we lost 4 very close games and won two very close games..

Judge the season after the bowl game. I know that will be very hard for you.

99% of your posts are incredibly negative. I get that; you get a lot of attention for it. You are certainly bright and many of your comments are spot on.

But, when I read your stuff, I am reminded of a famous quote Bear Bryant gave to a young sportswriter after losing a game to another team that Alabama was favored to beat:

"SON, YOU HAVE TO UNDERSTAND ONE THING: THE OTHER TEAM HAS SCHOLARSHIP PLAYERS TOO"

What was your opinion of the Ferentz decision to go for it on 4th and 8? I thought it took a lot of guts, and was uncharacteristic of this coaching staff.

How about some real analysis from you, instead of the consistent smart-ass, snarky comments?? I want your honest opinion on that decision. It surprised the heck out of me, after watching Ferentz for 20 seasons.

He picked Iowa 7-5 - he's elated with this year!

All of the above combined with, what I feel is the biggest factor, an inability to hold onto the ball in clutch situations.

Wisconsin- 2 terrible special teams turnovers (1 before the half with a chance to take the lead, 1 late in the third on our own 10), and 1 late INT on a drive with an opportunity to win the game.

Penn State- Bad INT scrambling to get a play off late when we should have calmed down and just take a TO. Even with Stanley playing awful, they were 3 yards away from a lead with minutes left.

Purdue was an outlier in that we won the turnover margin, but poor defense and questionable point-chasing negated that.

NW- 2 really bad fumbles, 1 late with a chance to take the lead.

The team was just not clutch this year. That can be learned, but usually the hard way, which seems to be the case this year. Hopefully it translates into close wins next year.

Kirk has gambled a lot this year, but that call might have been his biggest gamble of all. He used to always choose the conservative decision, even when it was blatantly obvious it was the wrong one. Now he chooses the aggressive decision any time its close, even if its marginally the wrong one. I love it.

Play calling ineptitude, special teams ineptitude, and QB ineptitude in must-win games.

That’s what happened.

Just how many season has iowa played without a nfl caliber TE? It's pretty rare. Yes we should have utilized Fant better. But even with the play calls that came his way, I think he under performed on his own right. He dropped some catchable throws, and seemed pretty soft when it came to attempting to break tackles after catches.

Point is I dont think we were THAT much better at TE than average. Not compared to how much better this defense compared to some years. Stanely inconsistency, lack of true play makers at RB and WR, and poor special teams play make sense for the 4 loses.

They knew Nebraska would either score again in regulation time, or beat them in overtime if they punted it away.
