What did you think of Gabe last night?

I was excited to see him on the floor. I thought he did pretty well for a guy who hasn't gotten a lot of PT. And has limited bb experience.

Liked what I saw a lot. And best thing is that he is a freshman who can be expected to get better. Tremendous potential, seems to me.

i just wish archie had more time to develop into better player.

Not sure if serious. But we've seen flashes of brilliance from Devon this year, and I only wish someone could have figured out how to draw more of that out of him on a regular basis. He could have been a solid contributor if they had. Unfortunately, he didn't have coaches early in his Iowa career who could do that, and he was hobbled a lot by injury.

I liked what I saw from a freshman center that needs to add some size. I reviewed the travel call and I can't see how it was a travel. It was simply a very nice move for a score. I truly believe that he wouldn't be so lost on his defensive movement if he played more minutes. He is a wonderful shot/pass blocker with his length but needs more experience to know where he needs to be on the court. I'm actually kind of ****** that he hasn't been getting more minutes. It's not like the NCAA tourney is really a strong possibility this year. Why waste his future development on getting Brommer so much time on the floor? Here's to hoping he plays more.

Gabe has been out, injured with a hip flexor since late November/early December. That can take weeks to months to recover. And you cannot move much at all during that time. Unfortunate, but he still has a lot of practice before the season ends in 6 weeks. Next year he will be a completely different player...

Why did Iowa not redshirt Gabe if this was all he was going to play? Hope he gets 10-15 minutes a game the rest of the way, or else it is a wasted season.

If Gabe is a willing shot blocker and rebounder, he should be on the floor...he showed that he was both last night. Iowa needs no scoring from the Center position as long as White/McCabe/Basabe is on the floor all the time, no particular order.
If it means playing 4 on 5 as some has suggested with Archie on the floor, so be it, I will take those two things over them being limited offensively at this point.
He can only benefit from more playing time. He could be a decent scorer with more experience. I was surprised to see him get into the game at Indiana, that is a very difficult place to play, very intimidating, but Gabe did very well. Why not give him some of the minutes Brommer and Archie are getting.

Archie is playing well with the minutes he is allowed. Loved his outstanding manly dunk the other night.....

:)

gabe did alright but i think both front court guys are recruits that coming in are better than him. i dont see him ever being more than a 5 min guy at iowa. hopefully i am wrong and he develops but he is so raw and meyer and woodbury are already more polished. maybe he will develop a lot since he has played so little but he doesnt look like a b10 post.

I kind of wish Coach McCaffery had decided to redshirt Gabe, but that's water over the dam now. I have high hopes for the young man. This is like his fourth year of organized basketball and he has the tools and the attitude to develop into a nice player for us. Not much of an outside shooter from what we've seen so far, so I hope he really works on his post moves and defense. Liked the spin move against Indy. If they are going to call that a travel, they could have called Zeller for a couple as well. All in all, I am encouraged by his play and think he deserves more minutes.

only problem with redshirting him is that then we would have 3 posts all getting done the same year. that isnt a very good set up for your schollies.

Gabe could end up being a Kurt Looby type of player.....

Just wish he could have received more playing time. He is coming along nicely so far.....

:)

He could still redshirt next year.

If he is the 7th guy in line at the 4\5 spot than he is going to see even less time next year as there is only 5 guys ahead of him this year, and two of them don't play.

Redshirting would put him in the same class as Woody and Myer but I think that could actually be a good thing. A, There is certainly the possibility that Woodbury could leave a year early or someone could get hurt. B, After McCabe and Basabe are gone is when he could really be needed and it would be nice to still have good depth for two more years.

I think you could set it up in a manner where he redshirts but needs to stay on track to graduate after 4 years and then reevaluate once you have a better idea of what he might bring.

Of course the downside to redshirting him is that you're stuck burning a scholarship on a five min a game player. Fran will hopefully be bringing in players better than him every year, no worse in tying up a scholarship for another year.

I think Gabe will only ever play the 5, so it would really be more of a three man rotation at that spot with Woody, Meyer and Gabe battling for those minutes.

I wasn't impressed with the kid and I don't see what others see in him. Yes he is athletic but he is so raw from a basketball talent perspective that its going to take him a few more years to develop the court sense that is needed. He should learn a ton from the incoming class but he will likely be relegated to the bench for most of his time at Iowa.

McCaffrey isn't in a position to fill any scholarships with additional project players like Olaseni. If he didn't think the kid could play, he should have red shirted him. He didn't, so wasting a year on the bench seems pointless. A juco capable of contributing down low would have made more sense IMO. Short term vs. long term I guess, but this team would be a bubble NIT team if they had a physial presence down low...even if just to rebound and defend. Scoring isn't our biggest problem.

People are too tied up in W's and L's and NIT bubble talk right now. Our record the last two years was 21-42! People are SERIOUSLY griping about 'wasting' a scholarship with Gabe because he hasn't seen extended minutes?!

ANY minutes are valuable for a developing player. He had a couple blocks and ran the floor well vs. IU; any assumption that he won't ever play much the next three years is baseless. Not saying he'll play a ton, but there's no way to gauge it right now.
