What did we miss on Desmond King?

I think by now that it is clear that several NFL teams were scared away from drafting Des King earlier because of questions about his character that arose after his suspension for the first quarter of a 2015 game against Nebraska. With all the focus on player development and discipline after Joe Mixon and Dalvin Cook and Ray Rice, it just seems like fewer teams are ready to take a chance on a kid who was suspended for an entire fifteen minutes of a B1G game two years ago that nobody remembers nor cares to think about even......

Fall that far without ever being suspended for a game........I am not buying the character angle at all.

I could grasp at straws, too.

I think King was exposed for the pedestrian defender he is in the Senior Bowl. Maybe he has the speed to play corner but not the skills. That's on the Iowa pass defense coaching scheme.

The draftable DBs in this class were awesome and numerous.

Desmond had a bad Senior Bowl. And let's face it, the Iowa defense scheme does not set up CBs for NFL, which is why nearly all Iowa CB's have transitioned to safety.

What I think teams thought is that King is probably another Hyde. Which isn't a bad thing, but do you spend a high draft pick on that type of player?

We all know the player King is, and I think he'll do well with the Chargers. But teams are not going to overspend on someone who probably doesn't have a real position in the NFL

The other thing that may have had a small part to play is the NFL is a copycat league and once guys start to fall there are many GMs out there that start to second guess themselves and ask "did I miss something on this guy". The same can be said on the positive news and guys tend to shoot up.

The draft is such a crap shoot anyway. King is going to do well and people can second guess not coming out etc but the guy got his degree, played with his team mates fro another year, and accomplished more goals. There are some guys that money isn't as big of an issue as other people. If King performs well he will make his money and write his own ticket. I am happy for him as he seemed like a good kid and was a great Hawkeye.

Okay, I was watching one of the NFL draft aftershows on ESPN or the NFL Network and they were talking about some of the guys in the draft who fell down the board because of character issues. All the talking heads at a round table discussion nodded their heads when Desmond Kings issues were discussed. In addition to the one quarter suspension for the Nebraska game in 2015, he was also a pee wee football and high school teammate of Jourdan Lewis from Michigan, who was recently charged with a misdemeanor for domestic violence. While it seems odd that the cornerback from Iowa would be punished for the actions of his high school teammate from four years ago, we all know that the NFL has zero tolerance for players with character issues. When you add in the fact that Desmond may have crossed paths with Aaron Hernandez's brother when he was a GA at Iowa a few years ago, there are just too many question marks around Desmond for any team to take a chance on him in the first four rounds of the draft.

That's what they said about Richard Sherman too. All Dez will need is a little time to learn the Defense and then I believe he can play any position in the secondary. Way more valuable in my book then a bump and run corner. Which by the way I bet King can do. There is zero chance that Lattimore or any corner this year can cover Jones, Evans or ODB on an island because noone currently in the NFL can. It's all about keeping a tight enough window to stall the QB's timing and allowing the pass rush to get home. If the pass rush doesn't get home then almost every corner would get exposed on every play. I really don't understand why they took any CB's in the 1st round at all since none of them are the all coveted "lock down" mold. . There really is no common sense explanation as to why King fell so far. It really was a case of mistaken identity.
