What About Northwestern?

I feel for the kid, but Beyer would end up being the Bill Buckner of Iowa. If we win out and so does Wisconsin we go from the B1G championship game to a very real possibility of playing in the RedBox or San Francisco Bowl because of how the affiliations work. I sure hope Woods realizes that.
It still kills me that he saw the ball on the ground from fifteen yards away, ran toward it, could still see it was on the ground, then turned his back to it and tried to block. Why block? Hooker wasn't blocking, he sprinted out of bounds, near the pylon, as soon as he saw ball on the ground.

Northwestern is a team that is fighting hard but the fact is their game is dependent on Thorson. They are just discovering a running game.

Wisconsin is like a old prize fighter. Tough as nails but they lack the speed to keep up.

This time of year, weather can really make a difference. Lets hope it works in NW favor.

They are hardly looking impressive doing it, and they had their customary lackluster September, but they are quietly leading the West as of this morning. They have an impressive win at MSU, a tough home loss to Michigan that they let get away, and a bunch of wierd, close games in between. They have beaten Purdue, Nebraska, and Rutgers by a combined total of nine points. A win is a win, and teams like can be dangerous. I don't expect to stay on top because most teams in the West have a game in hand on them, but you don't need me to tell you that they usually play us tough. They usually play Wisconsin tough as well.

Best way to beat them is by not mucking up game and playing into their hands. That's what we've done in the past. That's not what I expect us to do this year.
Very lucky they played Purdue game 1. They would not beat Purdue at this point in the year. I think they will have a tough time beating us in Kinnick. Nebraska sucks so not sure what validity that takes in to account.

They have a killer 3 game stretch coming up Bucky, Notre Dame then Iowa on the road. By the end of those 3 games if they are still standing them I'm a believer. They have 1 decent win so far this year MSU who has been Jekyll and Hyde this year.

I really don’t like that they get a bye week before our game. He already calls it “Iowa week” so now he will have 2 weeks to put in some trick plays and get his kids all hyped up...

I don't think they have a bye. Anything but. They got a date with Notre Dame, now ranked #4, the subject of which has drove much of this thread.

It is never just one or two plays. We led the game again after that mistake. We didn't shut them down.

Respectfully, I disagree. Groeneweg’s fumble and Beyer’s loss of awareness took away two critical scoring opportunities and killed any momentum we had. Beyer’s was especially bad because it could have easily been either a TD, FG, or at worst pinning Wisconsin inside their own red zone. That was a total mental error that he should have learned to avoid when he was in 7th grade. It is what it is, own it.

The difference between winning and losing between two evenly matched, highly-skilled teams comes down to the little things. The Hawks failed at the little things and that’s what gift wrapped Wisconsin the game.

If you want to blame the rest of the team and say it was their fault they didn’t play better, I could just as easily turn that around and say the rest of the team gave us enough of a cushion that clean, no-frills special teams play was all we needed to lock the game up. Instead we made two knucklehead errors (one way worse than the other) that gave it up.

In life it’s okay to call a spade a spade and say someone screwed up royally to bad effect. Believe me, I’ve done it plenty in my life and probably way more than the average person. We don’t have to avoid blame for the sake of trying not to hurt feelings

This just seems like a year where Iowa will pound them. I know we have tended to beat each other at the other's place, but this season just seams like one where Iowa rolls in this meeting.

The way I look at it, any drive where the O does not score can cause defeat and any drive by opposition where D gives up points can cause defeat. Lots of imperfection in play and coaching throughout any game and always could have done better. Those turnovers obviously stand out more.

I am not totally following or agreeing with what you are saying.

Yes, Groenweg's fumble on the punt return would have given us possession at midfield or better with plenty of time left in the first half. That was big but again a very odd almost 1 a 1000 strange hit and fumble.

Not sure where Beyer's miscue took away a legit scoring opportunity from Iowa as it occurred 90 yards away from Wisky's endzone. I totally agree that it ended up costing the hawks 7 or at least an easy chip shot FG and some definite momentum. It also cost Iowa time on the clock as the hawks had the 17-7 lead and could have driven the ball and used clock at least that might have altered the very end of the game.

I disagree it could have been EASILY a TD or FG. Time to let the Beyer situation go.

You will get a great read on NW this weekend. They play Wisconsin. If they can beat Wisconsin, they certainly can beat Iowa (remember, they already defeated Purdue!).

I think Wisky manhandles them, particularly if the weather is wet and cold

This is the formula for everyone to beat Iowa. For the life of me I don't know why teams don't bring the house every down. We have been historically bad at picking up LB and safety blitzes and when teams ignore that (OSU last year), they pay for it.

Penn State is going to blitz early and often.

Black out game at kinnick in November? Iowa will hang 50 on them.

And now Hornibrook is in concussion protocol and is questionable for tomorrow's game.

Say what you want about Hornibrook but if he can't answer the bell Northwestern's chances to win obviously go up a level or two.

Wisconsin still has that ground game so we will have to wait and see. If Northwestern gets to face an inexperienced QB when the rest of the league gets Hornibrook that may be the best example yet that they have a lucky horseshoe up their ass this year.

They've already played Purdue and Nebraska at just the right time. Now they miss Hornibrook.

Man I want to put a fitty (50) on them in a couple weeks

Well they did us a tremendous favor by bucking the Badgers, but we couldn't take advantage

Don't look now, but their non existent running game is coming to life.

This may be the year the stars align for them. Purdue, Wisconsin turn ball over and over again. No Hornibrook. Rutgers on schedule. Escape Frostbite because of preposterous coaching decisions.

Their remaining conference schedule includes the Hawkeyes, Minnesota, and Illinois. We had better take care of business when they come to town on the 10th.
