NCAA Tourney loss > NIT Champ

This run has been fun but thats a fact

I think this depends on the team you have. I have changed my stance on this and use to agree with you 100%.

If it is a veteran team then no doubt an NCAA tourney berth and 1st round loss is better because a deep run in the NIT wont do a whole lot for you in the coming years.

A young team that returns almost everybody next year, like Iowa, winning 5 games in a tournament is huge.

I would also bet that with a 1st Round tourney exit, RDM wouldnt even have been considered to run the point next year. Now I think he is a lock to play a huge majority of his minutes next year at point guard, all because of how he has played in the NIT.

I'm not sure why so many expect that Iowa would have lost their first round matchup in the NCAA tourney, I'm not so sure about that. Look the Hawkeyes have won ALL of their NIT games by double digits. 2 @ home, 1 road, and 1 neutral. With the way they are playing ball I think they would have been a sweet sixteen type of team in the NCAA. You can see every game they are getting more confident in what they are doing out there. They are all in right now and it is showing big time. Fran has these guys leaving it out on the court every night. I haven't watched a game where I questioned an individual lack of effort since probably the Michigan game.

All that said the NCAA birth should always come first in order of program goals. Then it's all about what you do with the opportunity when you get it. Winning the NIT would be a fantastic accomplishment for this team. In recruiting kids want to know they will have fun playing basketball. Winning in postseason basketball is as fun as it gets for these kids.

The experience gained from this NIT run will prove to be invaluable to the success going forward.

Im not assuming Iowa would lose in the 1st Round.

The post I was responding to made it an either/or choice.

Win the NIT or lose in the 1st Round of the NCAA Tourney.

I know it is only the NIT but no school from the state of Iowa has ever won a D1 post season tournament, in fact Iowa is the only school to have even played for any post season championship (first was in 1956, NCAA). If Iowa wins it I think people around here will remember.

We need to stop trolling each other over this and enjoy the ride. If Iowa is fortunate enough to win tomorrow we will be trolled enough by the jelly and butthurt clown fans.

That's about what I was trying to say, but I phrased it poorly. You and I and the rest of HN will remember, and you're right that other Iowans may remember as well, but everyone everywhere else will forget soon. I'm thrilled that Iowa is still competing this late in the year and is looking good against quality teams.

People please remember this is the NIT. Just to put that in perspective Women's basketball was on ESPN and the NIT was on ESPN2

Considering how bad Iowa was when Fran took over, there is nothing wrong with being excited about being in the NIT championship game.

I get what you're saying, but it isn't the NIT excite that has me worried. It is the people who believe Dan Dakich's belief that Iowa will be the preseason favorite depending on who leaves for the NBA from Michigan, Indy, MSU and OSU.

Give me a break, dark horse contender is one thing but favorite? I don't think so.

It can be easily argued that winning the NIT is greater than losing a 5/12 game as the 5 seed. Winning the NIT makes you around a top 40 team (maybe better). It's not exactly the 68 "best" teams that make the tournament.

I'd be curious what the viewership / ratings difference was between NCAA Women's and the NIT was. Anybody know how to find out that info?

Nobody really cares about either unless it is your favorite team playing in it. If Iowa was not playing last night I would have been watching something else.

Where have you been?

Work got busy, really busy. I try to get on here daily and read a little bit of what people are saying. But a thread about ActiveIdiot definitely peaked my interest to take the time to post. Especially since he hasn't posted on it yet.

I do recall I said that he can be happy that Wisky finished higher than Iowa this year, but then made the comment about how they would lose in the first round of the tourney. He went on his rant about Bo Ryan is awesome and I'm stupid. Well look who got the last laugh.

Its an interesting debate and of course the Dance is the goal...no debate there. But with the benefit of hindsight...I would would prefer a 5 game run in the NIT than be a 12+ seed one and done in the NCAA.

I would argue that if you don't make at least the Sweet 16...you are remembered as much as the teams who missed out on THE tourney.

Most years I would say the final 4 of the NIT are at least as good as the 30-50th ranked teams.

For THIS Iowa team...the current scenario is better than barely making the Dance and losing early.

Carry on.

Yeah, pretty much. Things are working out beautifully for the Hawks in the NIT. I really hope they are going to be a better team next year because of it. And there really isn't much difference between the better teams in the NIT and the lower-seeded power conference teams in the big dance. Virgina, Iowa, Maryland would not exactly have looked out of place in the big dance if you ask me.

Certainly if you are trying to get the BEST 68 teams in the dance certainly Virginia, Iowa, Maryland, Baylor would have been better choices than NC A&T etc.

The tournament's all about matchups. Some teams you match better with others not so much. Which teams execute better within those mini-matchups are the teams that win.

In a year people will remember who won the nit the exact same amount as they will remember who lost 1st round of the NCAA. Not at all. But during the entire next year it will be brought up constantly before it is forgotten forever.
