It was called a "open practice" and not everybody was there. Gilman and Skon worked out in the morning so they were not there I was bumbed about that. Clark was pounding a wreslter to be named later don't feel I should say who just yet. Gambrall and Burak were going hard and Burak was actually getting the better of Grant. But Grant stayed after and worked on the ropes hard for a while. He is definately putting the time in. Liked what I saw out of him. Burak was just to big for him. Dennis & Grothus were going hard and it was not all that close with Dennis winning in every aspect. McDonough looks GREAT and I felt bad for Gerule(sp). He was working hard and just couldn't do much with Matt major mismatch but he was pushing the pace hard. Ballweg was making Ryan look silly. I was impressed with Lira working hard and the amount of attention Terry was spending with him and Thomas was soaking it all in and learning lots of new things while battling with Meyer. Backes was taking it to Evans this will help Mike get better mentally and physically although I did feel sorry for Mike. Brooks and Klapt showed up later and Brooks is a beast LOVE THIS KID!!! He's a goer and he was schooling Klapt.

Well that's all I should say I guess... I hope I don't get in trouble for this just trying to give a little update of for some of you.....

I dont post much, but I really do enjoy all of you guys' postings here. I cant wait for the season to get underway and look forward to the real practices getting here.

Any idea when the first open practice will be(on saturday football mornings).

Thanks

Why even bring up who Clark was pounding on if you're not going to give the name of the guy? Are you just doing it for attention?

So I went to the open practice today. I saw what's his name wrestling what's his name. I also say that one guy just beating the crap out of that other guy I can't really talk about. It was pretty cool right up when I saw the bigger buy beating up on the littler guy. I would love to tell you more but I just don't think it's the right time yet.

I appreciate the info since it's impossible for me to attend practice. I understand the secrecy is frustrating but there might be a good reason for it. Then again, maybe tobini likes to make us suffer

Yeah there's a reason for it. it's to say, "i went to practice and you didn't" thats the reason. Like sparky said, for attention.
here was what FF wrote up:

Spent a couple of hours in the Iowa wrestling room this morning at practice and came away with some confirmation of things that I thought and a few surprises. I have some strong opinions on the guys and definitelly think that the lineup is shaping up. Here is how I see the lineup this year (at least for the start.)

125-McDonough
133-Ramos
141-Ballweg
149-Kelly
157-St John
165-Evans
174-Gambrall
184-Lofthouse
197-Lira
285-Telford

Here is some stuff from today.

McDonough and Cory Clark were wrestling and it's a little hard to judge a young guy against Matt. Clark started out very sluggish and the coaches go after him a bit and he woke up as practice wore on. McDonough looks good and ready to go. Thomas Gilman was wrestling against Topher Carton and they were working on a lot of things. Gilman is really good and I believe the gem of this class. Carton looked pretty solid today and a lot more physical which he needs to be.

Ramos was going with Brody Grothus but I didn't watch a ton of them today. Grothus does still use a lot of what I call "junk" and has a lot of improvements to make.

Ballweg was wrestling Michael Kelly and they were good to watch. Both guys looked pretty good and I think that they are both ahead of where they were the end of last year. I really look for Ballweg to make some noise this year and score some points at nationals. Kelly is a grinder and had trouble using that style last year sucked down but looks a little leaner right now and was getting after today. I hope that he can get comfortable down at 149 and keep the energy up and impose his style. Skonieczny (sp?) was wrestling with Slaton and taking quite a few lumps but that was to be expected. He is certainly not ready this year but we'll see down the road.

I can't remember off the top of my head who St John was wrestling but he looks healthy and ready to go. Again, I didn't watch a ton of St John and it's hard to watch everyone.

Evans and Lofthouse were getting after it pretty good and had some nice battles. They were trying to work on Lofthouse in the bottom position and Evans was riding him hard. They had some good scrambles from the feet and both guys loooked pretty good overall. Lofthouse does not look like he got any bigger though which scares me a little bit.

Gambrall looked the best that I have seen in a long time if not ever. He is thinned down and working hard and looks really focused right now. He was rolling with Walt Gilmor today and definitely getting the best of him. I look for a very big year out of Grant at 174. Alex Meyer looked pretty good but don't remember who was rolling with right now.

Already spoke about Lofthouse but Fahler and Brooks were working out together until Brooks got a little banged up and they pulled him out. Didn't look like anything serious though. Fahler is in the dog house a little right now so we'll see what happens there. Brooks has a LOT of potential and I think with a year in the room that he is going to be very good for the Hawks.

Lira was wrestling Klapprodt who looks like he has gotten pretty big and won't see 174 again I don't think. Lira was getting the better of him from his feet and looked sharp there but was getting a little sloppy on the mat and needs to clean some things up for sure. Burak is a big tough kid but doesn't look real athletic and I don't think he looks like he's ready right now. I look for Lira to get every shot to win the spot and keep it but if he slips up they might pull Burak out of shirt and see what he can do.

Telford was not in there today and has been doing a lot of work with Dan Erekson with HWC since they don't really have any partners on the roster right now.

Sounds like there will be a big recruiting weekend coming up in October before the Iowa vs Penn State football game.

Awesome write up! I'd be surprised to see Grant go 74 but that's been the rumor and like I posted last week Grant was getting after it. Also I really hope Burak goes 97 ASAP.

I thought this message board was a little better than the other one with the personal attacks. Just trying to give a little info on practices sorry to pass along some information.... As for the wrestler I could not name its something that might get me in trouble so I can't go there. There is a reason behind why I can't go into detail and I apologize for that but I just can't. My posts are in no way to get more attention towards myself its just trying to fill you guys in a little bit on what I get the chance to see. SORRY for trying to give updates!!!

Tobini.....I for one enjoy your various posts on the wrestling team and appreciate you taking the time to provide this forum with updates.

Thanks for the information. It seems that the "in-fighting" from the football boards has overflowed into the Wrestling boards. I too come here for a lot of great information from posters that follow Iowa wrestling very close. I do appreciate you all taking the time to keep us updated.

to those bashing ppl that post updates what is the fing point? these guys are trying to give out as much information as possible. some of the guys that post on this forum have great ties with the coaches and if they tell him not to say anything they respect the man. brands and co have reason for the public not knowing everything about this team which is a good thing!

wrestling isn't like basketball or football where you have 1,000 reporters at every practice relaying information to the public so any news is great news. f you for trying to blast one of our most respected posters on this wrestling forum

if some of you haven't notice fulsa doesn't come around here much anymore because idiots ran him away

Thank you Tobini for the information and all that you bring to the board. I greatly value you and all the guys’ posts with some direct observations and/or insider information. It seems like more and more of the guys with insider information are refraining from posting on many of the message boards because of a** clowns that like to nitpick and insult for some odd reason. For all the guys like me that can’t get to practice very often and don’t have great inside ties, please refrain from bashing the few guys that offer some of the most valuable information.
