Well I'm on board now

I kind of feel foolish for not being behind this hire from the jump. Sometimes you have to see your new coach behind a Hawkeye banner and talking exclusively about your team to appreciate what you are getting.

I'm pretty excited with what Fran can bring to Iowa City. I got goose bumps just listening talk about what kind of basketball he was going to bring here. It's going to be so nice to see up tempo basketball at Carver again.

Can we hold a 36 Mafia concert now that everyone is sippin on the sizzurp. I may have to call in to work tonight to go to the meet and greet!!!

Anyone who has been around Iowa BB their whole lives has to love what Fran just said... from talking about Carver rocking back in the day, to former players he has connections with, etc... He really nailed it.

its great he will be getting past players involved and great that they won't to contribute to get this team back to the dance

It's good to be back. :)

One of the first things I noticed about Fran is his confidence. Wow. I literally have no doubts that he will get it done here. He may not be flashy, but after hearing him talk I was pumped. Like I wanted to walk over fiery coals if that's what he wanted. I think he is going to be a great recruiter and developer.

I still am anxious to see who he fills out his staff with. But I'm not as concerned about it as I was before the conference.

I think that was the problem with the last coach, he was always behind the banner. Better choice this time, to put the new coach out front. Sorry, couldn't resist. :)

lol. Clever. That's what I get for not proof reading my post.

He gave the right vibe...

and showed he has at least researched Iowa basketball history, or paid attention when someone was telling him about it. He gets it that fans want to connect, and one way to do that is to tap in to whatever history or tradition that a school has.

I must admit that at first I was not enthused about this hire at all. But having slept on it and hearing what he had to say and how he said it, I am on board as well, and support Fran 100%. It will be nice to be able to once again look forward to basketball season, as opposed to it just being the depressing time of the year between the bowl game and the spring game. GO HAWKS!!

jshawks pretty much said what I was, at first I was disappointed, then I decided to get on board because he's gonna be here for awhile, Plus he seems like a motivated coach with a reputation for turning programs around.
He's got my support.

Yesterday a poster made a comment about this hire being a terrible one because we needed to make a splash. I didn't agree with that at the time and I still don't.

It's day 2 and after hearing Fran speak one time, or reading more about his history, so many fans are getting excited for Iowa basketball again. It's great to see.

I think this was a great hire and am convinced that over the course of the next few months, this guy will put a lot more butts in next seasons' seats.

Not the splash hire that so many wanted, and talk is cheap, real cheap. But I don't think any Iowa fan can say with a straight face that he didn't hit his first PC out of the park.

If he follows what he said in the PC I think the players, fans, and most important the wins will follow.

I wanted a "splash" hire mainly because I thought it would be the quickest way to unite the fan base and fill Carver up. I'm so tired of seeing empty seats around me at Carver. I grew so tired of watching a good Hawk play, turning to left and high fiving my daughter, and then turning to my right to see nobody. Just hasn't felt like Iowa basketball for a while.

I don't think my reasoning for wanting a big hire was flawed necessarily. But I think I did discount what kind of impact the right guy for the right job could have.

I now hope they really attempt to sell Iowa basketball to the fans. I know they tried to do some stuff during football season under Lick. But I hope they take it a step further and come up with new ideas to try to merge the basketball team with the football crowd.

I totally get/got the splash hire thinking don't get me wrong. I just felt that a great hire would have time to connect with the fan base and generate excitment before any tickets had to be sold or seats filled. I think he is doing that.

I was pretty doubtful the whole time that Iowa would make a splash hire. That would have been Pearl,Drew or Gillispie....thats it. I wanted all those guys, but it was always a longshot.
So, I was resigned to a non-splash hire, but hoping that the hire could bring splash-type recruits with him...hence the Forbes advocation on my part.
Well, forget that.
I think the hard core hawk fans will always be on board for the new guy,as I am,but the casual fan might want more..ie,either a name or recruits...so, at this point,I am holding out hope for a tasty addition to our already very solid incoming class...I think that could ignite a few more fans to come out for this new era.
In the end, fans come out to see fun, winning bb...if he can add one or even two quick perimeter recruits to this mix ...he could get off to a good start...and the fans could come back.

We all discussed how ''early momentum'' is hugely important...early momentum for Fran would be a jump in wins next year somewhere in the 16-18 vicinity.
Early momentum would be getting a commitment this summer from Randle.
Adding a Randle to the mix, with everyone else back ...could translate to a key tourny type season in 2011- 2012,which rolls into a big recruiting class of 5 guys for 2012..

Cashing in on early momentum usually tells the ultimate tale of of a coaches run...Monson and Amaker did not cash in...Tubby did. Beilein might be losing mo,while lick did not even come close.
