Welcome Back Kirk Ferentz

One thing I remember from the early days was Kirk Ferentz' emotional reaction to big games and big moments. It was unique to Coach F and reminded me of how vested he was
I've seen it both weeks this season. #1 was the ovation at the fake field goal ( Oh, yes, he heard it and, most importantly, he heard the message. Watch the vid!!) #2 was the today. It was such a **** yeah moment that I very haven't seen in 5-7 seasons.
The fake field goal might have been one of the strategically dumbest calls in the history of football -- both weeks - but, just as the fake punts were a turning point, so have they been. They have been inspiring to us... and to him.
Kirk Ferentz has chosen to be intent! I was, literally, jumping up and down with joy before the ball was snapped how much I loved the 9 up, 1 mid 1 back defense on such a crucial point of the game. It was unbelievably ballsy ... and so anti-Iowa ... to be in attack rather than prevent. Guess what? ******* oskie!!

Keep it up, Kirk! Leave derKirkFer behind and play to win!

I firmly believe that play call was as much statement as it was an attempt to score a TD. KirFer IS willing to put the pedal down and go for the win.

Are you not entertained!?

You know what? It was really dumb. But if his strategy now is to be on the offensive, I'm happy about it reguardless of the outcome.

9/10 for cajones, 11/10 for fan service, 1/10 for actual playcalling awareness. Call that play from inside the 10 and he walks in. From where he was at there was no question he was going to get run down because kickers just aren't very fast.

Changes are here to stay. I'll take aggression over passiveness all day. Might be head scratching from time to time, but I'm loving the "new" Kirk!

KF is better with a chip on shoulder. His emotions are real no doubt, I truly think he wants to go out with a bang. My status is still wait and see, but I do like some of the things I'm seeing. I didn't like what I saw that first half but total domination in the 2nd half.

I don't disagree that kickers aren't fast and the odds are against you; but if Kittle gets his head on the outside of his player, he seals the sideline for MK get the end zone.

I couldn't agree more. After seeing the replay it was there.

Execution....

Say what you want about curt, I truly think he is a good man with a good heart. At the end of the game he was emotional. He is absolutely invested in his teams. We demanded a win and he got it for us. I won't bad mouth him at 2-0 despite the last couple years.

Happy we won.. drinking a few still.

But I'm kind of chuckling at all this "changes and the new kirk" talk.

We will see.

The fake field goal was a statement to his players and to ISU.
To his players it says that the coaches have faith in them to make up the difference and win.
To ISU it said that we are there to win.

We got the win but I have to chuckle at your analysis that the fake FG said to ISU we are there to win. I'm serious when I say this. There isn't one D1 coach that plays that last 51 seconds like Iowa did today!! Not a single one. That honestly was the worst game management I have ever seen and KF has had some doozies. Actually I think ISU thought the opposite. I don't believe KF for one second when he said I thought we could pull it off. What are the odds of pulling off a 40 yard Fake Field goal attempt for a touchdown, got to be astronomical!!! Lol

The fake field goal may have been stupid but it was ballsy and so out of character that I loved it. My kids came running in because they thought we scored with all of my screaming. I had to explain that I wasn't happy because we had score, I was happy because we were finally playing to win and not ******* away the last minute of the first half.

I guess we will disagree on this one, in so much that in hindsight, it really looks like he was setting that up from 51 seconds on. Whether you agree with the call or not, and I actually don't, he managed that the exact way he wanted .

CJ was not on rhythm in the first half. He just wasn't crisp. The coach took a chance that came up 3 yards short. A good block on the edge and it was a salty call. That's football.

This...

The fake field goal was "ill advised".. that's the nice way I'll put it...

Thinking your kicker is going to out run the entire defense 40 yards on the last play of the half...

Sorry I like aggression and tactical gambles... but that was one of the strangest plays I've ever seen.

That play at the 20 yard line and in.. maybe.

We we will agree to disagree, because that was stupid hindsight or not. Iowa won and that's what's important. But had we not that 51 seconds would have cost Iowa the game. 51 seconds with 2 timeouts is an eternity in college football, that was BRUTAL Gester and you are in the minority with that thought process..

I wouldn't have called it the way he did. I can just see where he was going with it.
And really, if nothing else, he was using his previous tendencies to his favor.

Ditto for last week's attempt as well. The attempt this week would have got the first down last week. Clock managment issues aside this one was only three yards shy of the endzone. He is setting precedent that every team we play the rest of the year will have to plan for. It could save us from having a kick blocked or maybe there is a variation in the playbook that will work because the opposing D plans for this version. One thing is for sure and that is that MK has some athleticism.

Ferentz has never been a great game manager. He is an old OLine coach, for God's sake.

But Iowa's kids really do get better as they mature in the program; they play hard; and today they never quit.

That is coaching, folks. Sorry, but it just is. He is a very good coach and we are lucky to have him.
