Weight Gains Year over Year

I always like to look at this stuff. Some serious progress for a few people. I've said in the past that this year our line would average well over 300lbs and there were some skeptics. Based on the spring depth chart...here you go:

Scherff - 315
Boffeli - 295
Blythe - 300 (plus 25 wow)
Donnal - 305
Van Sloten - 300

I think Simmons is going to push Boffeli also...and he's 305. I just have a feeling we are going to be strong upfront and are going to be able to run the ball.

Impressive weight gains on the defensive side also...especially with some of the DE's.

I wonder how accurate all of these are. I don't know if I buy Michael Malloy packing on 35 pounds. Are they trying to convert him to LB?

Dude, it's on the internet, so it must be true. Yeah...Malloy has a big frame, but that is a ton of weight for a tailback. What's interesting is that Ferentz has singled him out as a potential find or a guy with promise, so who knows. I knew Blythe was going to blow up with no wrestling, etc. He has a big frame to add weight and my guess is that he didn't lose any quicks either.

For Iowa standards, that is a big offensive line...and they all are very athletic and can move. You get that kind of beef all moving in lock step on the stretch play and it's going to create some serious cutback lanes. I don't think you will see the kind of penetration we saw in the last six games in the running game. I also like our chances in third and short situations. I'm really looking forward to seeing these guys in the fall. They still have a summer of lifting to add a few more pounds of muscle.

Stay healthy my friends.

Drew Ott going from 245 to 265 could also bode well for us. I really hope this kid is a player...and can excel at this level, this young.

I think most lines now are over 300 now for the most part, so while this is positive, I think this puts us in the norm versus a bigger than normal line.

Looks like all three LBers added weight. Hopefully they kept some quickness and will be able to maintain pass coverage. I thought last years coverage was an improvement from the year before, with a slimmed down LB core.

Additionally, Barkley Hill up near 220. He's gonna be a bruiser in the next few years.

And finally, the Hebrew Hammer... 236! Offda!

Great job putting that all together. This is very interesting, as I'd imagine Doyle can get within a pound or two on his goal weight for each player. If there's one guy whose job shouldn't ever be questioned, it's him.

I don't care about how much weight Kornbrath put on as long as he averages over 40 yards a punt. His 37.9 avg last year was 114th out of 118.

I would imagine Doyle told him something like this..."You're going to work as hard as you ****ing can to turn your legs into a carbon copy of Maurice Jones Drew.":p

Hopefully most of it went there.

I don't know about that....

I've been questioning our performance related to strength and conditioning ever since the Rhabdo incident (and even a little before as we did not look physical at all the 2nd half of the season in 2010). We haven't been nearly as physical at the point of attack as we have before, we aren't nearly as physical or as ferocious in our tackling as we normally have been, and we don't look nearly as "fit" from an eye test standpoint.

So maybe we are not undersized now, maybe. So the playing field is level now, do we then have the skills, experience, playmakers, talent, etc?

I think Spider may be on to something. We may have had a key tool to our program taken away on that deal. I know before then the guys were told by players from other schools their work outs were not near as tough as Iowa. These kids used to set their alarm and get up in the middle of the night to eat. As they had to consume a certain number of calories so many time a day. It was a very strict ruotine they were on.
