Weaknesses & or question marks

I'm going to try and come at this not from a negative perspective so much as an observational one.
So we all know we have two stud leaders at QB and Corner. What are the biggest weaknesses this team may have this year so long as the injury bug don't hit?
As far as offense goes the obvious seems to be WR in that it's Vandeberg and everyone else has hardly made any plays yet. But to what extent should their be worry? I think they have some athletes to work with in Smith and Scheel. You can put me on the Scheel band wagon for sure. This group may make more explosive plays this year in that if the Oline is better then last yr (many are predicting them to be really good) and CJ is healthy and improved then the sky could be the limit there I hope. However last years group did a whale of a job blocking in the run game and I have a tough time seeing this group matching that.

TE as a group will have questions. Kittle will be the man obviously but who will step up and play with him and play well? Heck if I know. Wiesnewski has the most time in program I suppose but really haven't seen enough of him to know how he'll do. Freshman will all be given a chance to show what they can do in camp so may the best players play there.

Kicking... replacing Koehn will be a big deal and I know nothing about who's going to win that job but who ever does will have had next to no kicks with 70k plus in the stands... Will that affect how the coaches call the game and the confidence they'll have in who wins the job may be telling early on...

OL. Now I'd mentioned how as a group the expectations are high. And they should be. However let me point out that Calhoun had a hay day against our tackles. Improvement amongst Croston/Boetteger and Myers will have to be made. Welch is pretty much the best of the group and it sounds like he'll be at center. Now Daniels I know got his feet wet last yr and did OK. But he is coming off some surgery and will still be a young player so I hope he's up for the challenge of starting and being in there every rep.

DEs.. Everyone knows how we are replacing two starters there. I'm not too sold on Hesse although he played well at times. He's just not big and athletic enough just yet to make an impact against the run and I think he can get bear hugged when rushing the passer. The Nelson boys I think will be an upgrade as far as their pass rushing goes. But how they'll do against the run I'm not so sure about either. I think a freshman or two will get thrown in there early on depending on how they look and given a shot. It will be interesting to see who all emerges and how the rotations look.

Safety. Snyder in particular and I know it was a close race last year when Taylor beat him out to play next to Lomax. Now from the best I could tell last year Lomax didn't do that great in pass coverage or even in pursuit of ball carriers. He took bad angles and was just out ran a lot. Now when he came down hill and filled the hole against the run he could bring the hammer. So what Snyder will bring may or may not be an upgrade we'll just have to see.

Corner and ole Mr. Mabin will have a target on his back. I really like him in that his size is great at 6'2 200 with long arms for a corner. But with the year King had Mabin will have his work cut out for him play in and play out. Iowa pretty much puts them on their sides of the field. King will move to the slot on 3rd downs but they don't usually move him around playing man up against the other teams stud. So other teams can game plan on how to get who they want on their studs fairly easily (unless Iowa shakes that up this year)

I think RB we are really solid not just with talent but depth. And LBs I think we will be really good. Now Mends hasn't been in the fire much and he'll be a question mark too. But he's a heck of an athlete/weight room warrior from what I've heard. The other LBs should be great. So I'm curious what you all think how this overall group may look.

How quickly James Daniels settles in at center. His back up. The development of the new kicker/punter/place kicker. O line pass protection.

I'd add, and it is often overlooked, two deeps. The two deeps last year were vital. If Iowa could replicate this again, they will have an above average shot at playing for the B1G championship.

Imo, the season hinges on CJB staying healthy. I realize that I am stating the obvious, but the Iowa offense will not be explosive this year like most years they will need the FG kicking to be at least decent.

The defense always starts with the front 7. They are solid but need the really good pass rush in todays' football of passing teams. If the O Line can be really good and even a little better in pass blocking than last year I think the offense will be better again scoring about 30 pts per game. But again the TEs and WRs will need to step up and settle in for CJ to have good targets.

Don't know if it's a weakness yet but I think we have a lot of questions about our special teams play.Punting and field goal kicking and coverage on both.

One position I flat out omitted and really shouldn't be is fullback. Those two guys Plewa and Cox were just animals in there last year and paved the way for many if not most of the long runs and short yardage runs that were successful. I expect there to be a combination of a couple of players that will be asked to do that and how well they do will be very very huge.

I know the coaches have mentioned that they will probably play a true freshman RB this year and I really wish they wouldn't if they don't absolutely have to. Lets just say Daniels/Wadley/Mitchell/Joly all stay healthy.(unlikely I know but bear with me) then how many meaningful reps would there even be available for a true frosh? I just don't think 3 to 10 touches spread out over the course of a season in garbage time is worth burning a year of eligibility... Yet I do understand the idea of staggering some of them too and with Eno in the fold for the next year... I just want the best players on the field at the end of the day and I assume the coaches know a thing or two more about that then me..

11-1 and west champs again. Looking forward to watching a healthy CJ perform his magic.

Problem is, when you have a big lead against Nowhere State, you can't be using your go-to guys. Plus, it would kind of be nerve-wracking to think about a kid getting his first carries as "Number 1" against Wiscy or scUM. I remember the feeling of dread I had vs. O$U in 2009 when the broadcast came on saying Wegher couldn't go, especially since A-Rob was already dinged and had missed NW game.

I would think that Mitchell/Joly could handle how ever many reps that would be... I get what your sayin about wanting to not throw green inexperienced RBs in there come BIG season for the first time if you can help it and I bet the coaches lean towards agreeing with you on that. I suppose that's a factor they weigh too. It's just a tough thing to justify burning an entire years worth of eligibility over a handful of snaps tops...

I think we will see the 2009 DL phenomenon at DE. Hawks lost 2 senior 4 years starters off the stout 2008 D on the DL and the DL was better in 2009. I think that's what happens in 2016 at DE. That of course considers that Ott wasn't able to really play in 2015. W that consideration, overall talent upgrade at DE in 2016. Pass rush should be better.

WR and kicking specialists are more unknown IMO.

I agree with the kicking and WR areas being question marks.
I also question our OL. I know it has been getting some love this off season, but Im going to wait until I see it perform.
Same with the DL.

The kicking game worries me the most. I think someone on the WR corps will step up and surprise the heck out of me. Just have a weird feeling about that. I'm really really anxious to get this season kicked off! At least I hope they can kick.

Absolutely. It's a fine line. And there's the additional factor, at least in the case of KF, that "running it up" might happen, but not because 1st- and 2nd-stringers are playing late and racking up stats.

I'm concerened about the special teams. I think Recinos will do well at kicker but there might be some rough spots starting out. I don't know about his leg strength but I hope he can kickoff like Koehn did.

Graduate transfer Ron Coluzzi from Central Michigan should be a bit of an insurance policy against things going terribly wrong at either kicker or punter.
