We need better coaches

I think a lot of fans are wondering why there were not a few more blitzes. You can Run blitz to and try to shut down that first down gain of 5 and put them in 2nd and long and if it is not a running play you keep going after the QB. You can zone blitz, you can take a chance with a corner blitz in the right formation.

But again this is almost like beating yourself to not adjust and not try adjustments in the 4th qtr. The hawks played pretty vanilla defense that last big 88 yard drive and every offense knows exactly what is coming at them
Phil Parker does a fine job. The game was not won or lost in the final minutes, it was lost at 3-0 turnover margin and dozens of mental mistakes.

Who puts the players on the field that can't execute? Who recruits said players that aren't talented enough to execute?
Short of wisconsin, ohio state and michigan state, 11 big ten coaches should yearly be fired for ineptitude in failing to win a division, got it.

Most fans will be happy about junior taking the reigns. That's the problem with Iowa's fan base. Most of them are bigger Ferentz fans than Iowa fans.

I don’t agree with your premise that fans live KF better than Iowa football. How is that possible? I guarantee that if Kirk Ferentz left, attendance would remain the same if the new coach was achieving 7-5 /8-4 records. However I do see Brian as an upgrade over Kirk simply because he somehow has 10x the charisma, must be from mary’s side of the family. I also see the whole ferentz family as an underachieving group.

You have it messed up. Its called supporting the team. You and anyone who supports Ferentz are no different. The only difference is some see a maintained level of success, the EXACT same level we had under Fry, and understand the difficulty in getting to the next level consistently. We all want a national championship. Id wager that there isnt ONE Iowa fan that appreciates KF who wouldnt sell him down the river or trade him for a national title. So lets get rid of him for a string of matt campbells, jim criners, mccarneys and rhodes?

The narrative constantly changes. Cant beat Iowa State. Well, now he has. Has undefeated regular season, schedule was too easy. Our hope for bigger things is lightning in a bottle. KF gives us an outside shot at bigger glory with sustained relative success and a clean program. Id pack his bags, Fry's bags or your bags if you show me the moving van with the magical unicorn coach that brings mystical recruiting levels and national titles. Call it complacency. I call it, historical perspective and appreciation for what we have. Check the history books for non-ohio state (hardly midwest) or nebraska midwestern team national championships in the past 50-60 yrs. ILLINOIS cant get a coach and if there is one recruiting area that should produce enough talent...wouldnt you go coach there. No one can or does. Hmmm?

Two of the larger plays came on db's getting burned. Very few calls will change that. Over half of the yardage on that drive.

Overall, Phil does. And the fact that we had given up only 14 pts. up to that point, 7 of which were a gift off a turnover reinforces that. And maybe that final drive didn't, on its own, cost us the game.

That said, I could not help but notice our defensive set in that final drive. I didn't take enough time to put the DVR on hold to compare that to earlier sets. But even before their first snap on that drive, their set had "prevent defense" written all over it. I told my brother as much. Technically, prevent is supposed to keep the 'D' away from the big play. Realistically, all it does is keep you from playing good, effective defense. My eyes could see, play after play, that no matter what the Badgers called, our 'D' was not going to be able to either shut down the run or stop the pass. Indeed, we did neither.

But what bothered me the most (and does year in and year out with Parker's defenses), is that this game had the feel where you KNEW we were not going to force any Wisconsin turnovers. I can't explain it, but there are two or three games a year where I can tell, by the end of about the second offensive series by the other team, that even if we do win, we will have to do it without getting any opposing turnovers. A good 90% of the time, that is the way it works out. It seems illogical, and indeed, by the next game, you can tell we are going to get turnovers - several of them.

Very subjective post - but these were my defensive observations from Saturday night.

Win One , gotta agree with your thoughts , offense played good enough to win , defense played good enough to win , I was screaming at Beyer to get away from the ball long before he hit it with his back foot , I thought they taught in grade school football to get away from the darn ball , he handed 7 pts to Wisky and the game on that one play , normally I do not believe one play ever costs a team a game , but that one did , the fumble on the punt return , admire the effort but he was pretty careless hanging onto the ball , special teams coach needs to be visited with that's for sure
For about three days, I agreed with you. And I still have no good feelings about Beyer - it was an incredibly stupid play by someone who seemed utterly clueless that he was anywhere near the ball - totally inexcusable. It wouldn't hurt my feelings if he is kept mostly in the coaches doghouse for the next 2-3 weeks.

But as the week has gone on, my focus has turned much more to two people on that play - Coach Levar Woods, whose job it is to coach players in such a way that could never, EVER happen; and 5th-yr. Sr. Kyle Groeneweg. If you watched that punt, Beyer was merely the last of about four players that were WAY too close to a live ball rolling on the ground - the other three did get smart and jumped away. Still they had no business being where they were. If you have watched Iowa punt coverage, especially since the last time something like this happened (about ten years ago, I believe), you see the punt returner wildly waving his arms - and I'm told yelling a code word that tells his teammates to find the ball and get away from it.

On the very next punt that got on the ground, you could see Groeneweg doing that. But he did not do that on the punt that Beyer touched. He may have done something, but he was not demonstrative about it, as he (now clearly) needs to be. Even if this is not his 5th year in the Iowa system, that is two mistakes he made that an experienced football player has to know just cannot be made. As I said earlier, Woods bears responsibility for making sure the ball-carriers are always protecting the ball, and always preparing for punts that get to and bounce around on the ground. But that, in my book was another error by a Senior - the people who are supposed to be leading the team to the bigger and better places.

I like Parker.

I think he would be better if he wasnt under KF. I imagine KF encourages him to play not to lose late in games.

Its been 20 years of this shit. Why are you pretending it hasn't been?
20 yrs of, the same as the 20 yrs before? Or would you prefer the 20 yrs before that? Pretending what? Ok Jesus. Walk on water. Change it. Everyone can whine and cry and woah is me. Maybe Campbell will come to Iowa City? Whats his record against KF? Isnt he one of the hottest young coaching prospects? OSU mention on short list. Fast forward 20 yrs, same whining.
