We got the Best of the Bohannons

I just wish they would have set JB up for the final shot last night instead of Pemsl who was 15 feet away from the basket.

There were like 4 seconds and Pemsl's guy came over to show help. I know Cordell isn't the best shooter but it was the right read by Jordan.

The question is more of why Cordell was on the floor. Would have rather seen a small lineup with JBo, Ellingson, Jok and Baer and Moss. I don't think there was enough time to get a rebound and second look

I see his defensive shortcomings and I expect him to improve because I also see that he's a freshman with huge upside who is one of the best young PG's in the country.

I think Ellingson was on the court, I remember thinking they were setting up a 3 point shot. Good point on Pemsl, if you're looking for a put back I think Cook is the one you want. I don't remember if Baer was on the court or not, he should have been.

The best one two punch was Lester and Arnold though some on here probably remember Ralph Millers team.

What has stood out in Madness ix that when intense close games are on the line....a rocket point guard is what the winners have,. along with other rockets.

A rocket guard would really compliment him.

There seems to be a lot of them on tourney teams. Could you imagine JB playing with Michigans guard? M uses a 2 point guard system.

I would love to see Moss at the 2 and develop as a slasher. I don't argue that lane penetration is a definite key to winning teams, but I don't want Jordan playing the 2. I think he thrives by having the ball so much. Take the ball out his hands now and you may just mess with his mojo. There are 4 other players on the court. We need 1 of them to learn to be the primary penetrator. There is no rule that it has to be your PG.

Come on man, why do you got to call us out? You have got to see the defensive shortcomings, it was glaring yesterday. If JB does continue to run the point, I'm guessing he will, hopefully whoever they put in that 2 spot can help shore this up or we will continue to struggle against good perimeter shooting teams.

Defense was definitely this team's black eye, but I just don't think that it has much blame on Jbo. No team in the NCAA tournament so far has been able to stop and elite PG without help from another defender helping to cut off the lane. It also doesn't happen much in the NBA. If you require a lock down PG then you will be waiting awhile. I can only think of 4 or 5 off the top of my head in the last decade. Simply put, all 5 guys must improve their "team" defense. That means better communication, better court awareness and certainly better rotation and help defense. I am optimistic.

This is where I'm at. The really quick point guards get into the lane at will on everyone. It's what the team defense does after they get into the lane that separates the good defenses and iowa.

At the beginning of the year I was very skeptical of Jbo. Now I'm on the bandwagon.
The kid is money. He works really hard that's the biggest part of the battle. His defense will get better. He will be solid for years to come!

Most people don't agree with you that Bohannon would be better off guarding a 2. Even if they did, he could still guard a 2 and play the point. So when someone says he shouldn't play point because of his defense, what they're really saying is he shouldn't be on the court because of his defense.

*sigh*

So we do have to have this debate again? It's quickness....do we need to go further or can we simply agree to disagree acknowledging that no matter what you or I say it won't change either of our minds?

you don't have to change each others minds to know that Jordan is one of the best PG's in the country - it's not even debatable at this point really? His D is his shortcoming - every player has 1.

Pemsl talks about the final play in the beginning of the video I posted from the postgame. He said they were trying to get a shot for Bohannon or Jok but TCU took it away. TCU sent 2 or 3 guys right at JB when he came across half-court.

Quickness is only an issue for him on D and that's doesn't change by playing the 2

It is true, it doesn't have to be. And yes he seems to do better with the ball in his hands, but he does shoot pretty darn well on the kick out.

Here is the offensive diagrammed:

Beilein got this from his uncle who was a hall of fame coach who earned a Silver Star in WW2. The uncle was a member of the Niland family that was the basis for Saving Private Ryan. Niland's team also won the 101st ABN basketball tourney in WW2. It's an old offense, but I do like watching Michigan play....and I don't like Michigan for obvious Hawk fan reasons.

He's our best post feeder and with the ball in his hands more as the PG he gets more opportunities to feed the post and ultimately more opportunities for kick outs

I watch the games, I see how JB struggles driving to the hoop and shedding his defender and I also see him struggling to keep up with opposing point guards. He can't get in their face defensively or they blow right by him. I must be the only one on this board that sees these things.

But points...assists....and whatever numbers you want to use all say he's among the best. So what's the point in even debating this?

While it may be true that Beilein has a better offensive set than Fran, I would lean more towards that Beilein is simply a better coach at this moment in time. I will also go out on a limb here and say that offense is not our problem. Yes it has been a problem in past years, but I believe that player confidence was a major contributor. Once kids see success they believe in success and I feel that we have gotten to that point now in the Fran era. Maintaining our current place in the B1G pecking order is now the key. Top half finishes every year will keep you your job and allow you time to try and raise the bar even more.

P.S. If we are looking for new schemes to implement I sure as hell hope they are defensive schemes. I think we can win with our existing offense.

I can only speak for myself here, but I'm not arguing that Jordan is great defensively because plainly put he is not. My point is just that there are even less lock down PG's then there are drive and dish PG's. The kid we have is the kid we have. He needs to improve in a few areas to reach his maximum potential of that there is no doubt, but the areas that he excels in already are of a rare variety as well.

Speed, agility, strength and lateral quickness will all improve with an off season in the Iowa strength and conditioning program. I know it's hard to, but remember he hasn't even had one of these yet. Will he ever be a lock down PG? It is doubtful, but it is also not required for success. 5 guys play defense. All 5 must move and communicate. This is where we need the biggest overall improvement is my point. Jbo is not the only average defender on this team. If a school with zero star recruits can play better team D than us against NCAA tournament teams it should only prove that the individual is not the lynch pin. 5 guys, that is the thing to remember. Defense is 5 guys. If they all improve then we should be better.

Do you gloss over what I said or what?- I agree with you. I think most do - D is a problem for Jordan - we all hope he's able to improve in that area and I think he's got the work ethic to at least become not a complete liability as his career progresses. That doesn't change the fact that he just had one of the best offensive years of any player at Iowa as a true Freshman and is and will be widely considered one of the best PG's in the country.

I think people are confusing "we need a quick point guard instead of Jordan" with "we wish Jordan happened to be quick". Because there aren't many quick point guards out there that are better all around players than Jordan. He has to absolutely be on the court. So the only question is where. He isn't good at guarding point guards, shooting guards, or in the zone, so defense is a wash. On offense he is the best passer we've had in as long as I can remember. In my opinion, that makes him a point guard.

So do you think he has to be a shooting guard to defend the opponents shooting guard?

Your only argument should be he shouldn't be a point guard because he can't drive. My rebuttal is a guy who keeps getting 20 and 10 doesn't have to drive. Our offense runs great with him at point.
