We ain't got no receivers

When your leading running back is also third among active receivers and climbing the chart with a bullet, your offense may be in a bit of a bind. Which may explain a lot about why this year's team isn't putting up yards and scores, and CJ's numbers are down.

- Leading receiver Riley McCarron has been somewhat invisible the past couple of games.
- George Kittle was last seen wearing a boot for a foot injury.
- Matt VandeBerg is done for the year.

Any reason for optimism that the receiving corps will step up these last two games and a likely bowl?

A bit of a bind? Some of Kittle's catches were totally on him, not the qb. McCarron is a nice little receiver role player who is instantly at speed. A main RB only having 7 is notable if you are an opponent D Coord. There is a rhyme and reason that the Hawks struggle on 3rd down with Daniels in the game. Cuts down the possibilities. Vandeberg was a solid receiver, but not the go to guy on a great team.

How does this happen? No doubt CJ is off. At the risk of calling Icky's ire (and others), I suspect CJ has a knee not so great which changes your plant (hopping) and wanting to be on a solid footing.

We dearly miss Tevaun Smith and Matt VandeBerg. CJ depended on Vandy on third down conversions.....

T Smith had attitude.....

Recommend Mute on the video.....

Could probably use Desmond on offense but he is essential on D. Remember he is The King.....

I thought either Smith or Scheel would step up. They haven't. Iowa has absolutely no passing game.

They've got no one to blame but themselves for lack of recruiting vision.

Well, O Martin saw a huge upset win Sat, but did he see an offense that would make a receiver want to come here?

Good question, I've been wondering about that myself. You can go either way with that, he may have saw an offense that desperately could use him right away or one that may not get him the ball enough.

We don't run the routes nor throw the ball soon enough nor as many times nor deep enough to say we do or do not have the WR talent.

Maybe the WR aren't talented enough, but we haven't seen enough changes to know. WR develop by targeting them and giving them opportunities in games...we don't do it enough.

I would like to see how many total targets (not catches) our entire receiving core has gotten past 10 yards....It isn't nearly enough.

Getting separation may very well be an issue, I am not convinced that the lack of separation is as much on the WR as many believe.

Yeah your being Captain Obvious with this post. But I think beyond the receivers being the problem there is the problem of CJ and the rest of the offense. He isn't getting the ball to the receivers. There were three or four good pass plays called to WR's Saturday where CJ couldn't get the ball to the receiver.

The problem is a function of execution for the whole offense. The offensive line can't hold the pass rush, CJ holds onto the ball too long and the receiver is off his route. The play were CJ through the interception over the middle, if he hadn't underthrown the ball, it would have been a 25-30 yard play. And yes Michigan brought a lot of pressure, but it has been that way a lot this season. He's missing a lot of passes he made last year.

We did? Who was that?

I saw Tevaun Smith catch 2 touchdown passes in an NFL uniform. It was preseason and he was cut since, but he had a cup of coffee, you have to have serious talent to even get that cup of coffee.

My point is we didn't use that talent to a fraction of it's potential. I said all last year he should be targeted 5-8 times a game...he had the skills....

I wouldn't call him a NFL receiver though. If that is the criteria then there probably was 2 on that team as I'd be surprised if Vandeberg didn't get that same "cup of coffee".

Fair enough. But we are using the talent we have at WR this year, IMO, and we didn't use the talent we had last year either.

I didn't realize AW had 28 receptions this year. I thought it would be in the high teens somewhere. From here on out I want that dude to have 20+ touches a game. Also, I am with 1hawkeye1 I thought either Scheel or Smith would step up and they both have not.
