Way Too Early - 2017-2018 Analysis

Here is some Maishe stuff I found on Twitter.

Strictly from the point of view of who I think has the most potential among the guards, I would like the 2-deep there to be:
Moss Bohannon
Dailey McCaffery

We're going to have JB at point for a few years. The "we've got to have more athleticism at PG" fans need to accept that. But the consequence of that is a premium on athletic defense at SG. Ellingson does a good job at D there but not with the athleticism we have to have with JB at PG. Fran has said Dailey plays good athletic D in practice and, from these tweets, is working his tail off. Plus, it seemed obvious this summer that Maishe is a heady, athletic, player, who shoots well and who's going to get better. To me, the only thing that has held him back is experience and strength. I'm going to say he fights his way into the rotation, at the expense of Ellingson and Williams.

In the frontcourt, Wagner has been the opposite of Ellingson in the backcourt. He hasn't provided a lot of O, but his energy and athleticism on D have been valuable. If Cook takes strides in the offseason, and Dailey comes on, allowing a few minutes with he and Moss at 2-3, Wagner's minutes could go down. Add to this equation Nunge, who could be an athletic spark at 3-4. Garza or Kriener should emerge at center with Cook/Pemsl dominating the 4. Where does Uhl play? If we weren't going to Germany this summer, I'd say he'd be gone. As it is, maybe he'll stay in Germany after the summer? Baer is likely the starter at 3.

Garza/Kriener Cook Baer Moss Bohannon
Wagner Pemsl Nunge Dailey McCaffery
Uhl Ellingson Williams

When does Fran have his end-of-season interviews with the players? The players' responses to those could have some bearing on our prognostications for next year.

I think you have it a bit backwards. Those not in the we need more athleticism at point guard need to accept the limitations on D and the iissues it presents. Purdue had a nice year but that very issue finally exposed them....badly.

People react way too much over one game. Kansas was definitely the better team but they could probably play 50 more times and not have a half that lopsided again.

See Villanova over Oklahoma in Final Four last year. One game/one half does not define a team or a season.

One game does not define. It was clear early that KU was challenging Purdue guards to beat them. Purdue has one of best players in the nation. Lacks guard support.

Sometimes good things come in packages that aren't perfect- like almost always. I was hoping for starting Christian Williams at PG at the beginning of the year- didn't happen. Bohannon is our PG and a good one, but has limitations. He'll be in at crunch time. How do you minimize his deficits then? Athleticism at SG- maybe sometimes 2 of them.

there is no doubt he is a good player. i don't think anyone is questioning that.

So, I know it's just during the PTL right now but....

My early semi-prediction is:

1. Bohannon, Williams (unless Dailey takes the backup spot from him)
2. Moss, Ellingson
3. Nunge/Baer (have a feeling Baer starts beginning of season with Nunge getting it eventually)
4. Cook, Pemsl
5. Garza/Kriener (might not matter at all which one starts)

Don't see too many minutes for Uhl. Not sure about Wagner yet. Apparently has improved, so maybe he can get some decent minutes at the 4?

I think Bohannon is going to have to play around 33 minutes a game. Williams just isn't good enough.

I think you have it about right; however injuries may change things. We don't know how much time Pemsl needs to recover and if he were to take a red shirt year that would spread that class out a little and put him in this year's group instead. As impressive as Pemsl was he does have a lot of things to work on if he were to red shirt this year.

Biggest problem I see is having both JB & Moss on the court at the same time. Both are defensive liabilities... hopefully, they both improve, but Moss really needs to take his defense to the next level or he'll lose minutes during critical times of the game. See Nebraska game... the guards made him look foolish.

Moss was one of the better on ball defenders we had last year.

I was at the game in Lincoln, and Moss got benched at the beginning for coming out flat footed. He then got re-inserted and rattled off like 13 straight pts. Moss had his issues last year in his first collegiate year of basketball, but as TK just stated, he was one of our better defenders most of the season...especially comparative to Jbo and Jok

You forgot Uhl

I think the Iowa basketball team wasn't really given much thought by opposing coaches seven years ago, but the opposing coaches will be giving this years team a lot of thought. Next years team should be pretty good too.

You forgot Uhl

I didn't forget. Fran is going to have some tough decisions to make, and sitting Uhl may be one of them.

Uhl averaged like 8 minutes and only scored 2 points over our last 7 games, so it's not out of the question. We brought in two freshman big men and he was already behind several of the bigs from last year.

I agree that Uhl is never gonna log a ton of minutes - but he's playing this year. In fact, I bet he averages more minutes then either Freshman. Just my opinion tho
