Way Too Early - 2017-2018 Analysis

I didn't forget. Fran is going to have some tough decisions to make, and sitting Uhl may be one of them.

Uhl averaged like 8 minutes and only scored 2 points over our last 7 games, so it's not out of the question. We brought in two freshman big men and he was already behind several of the bigs from last year.

Uhl will play every game as long as he's healthy.

My updated rotation. Subject to change weekly.

1. JBo 28/ CW 12
2. Moss 24/ BE 12/ JBo 4
3. Nunge 16/ Baer 24
4. Cook 21/ Pemsl 11/ Wagner 8
5. Garza 15/ Kriener 14/ Pemsl 6/ Cook 5

Min breakdown:
JBo - 32
Cook - 25
Baer - 24
Moss - 24
Pemsl - 17
Nunge - 16
Garza - 15
Kriener - 14
BE - 12
CW - 12
Wagner - 8

I think it looks pretty good. I'd make a couple small changes.

1- Baer will start at the 3
2- JBo won't get minutes at the 2. Dailey may have an opp to grab a few minutes or Ellingson will grab those extra couple minutes at the 2.
3- Pemsl can't play the 5. I really think Garza and Kriener need to fill the majority of those minutes with maybe a small dose of Cook.

I think he's closer to out of the rotation than he is to playing every game but that's just my opinion.

He's got too good of handles and is pretty decent on D and is Iowa's lone senior. I just don't think he'll be completely shut out. I think his minutes will increase by a tick. He just won't be the one logging the majority of em

What spot do you see him playing? I think he has to play the 4 and you gotta put him behind both Cook and Pemsl

I think people are too worried about 3-4-5 in this offense with these parts. He can be counted on to handle the rock in a team short of guards. He is an offensive liability IMO but I just can't imagine any scenario where he just sits all season. If I am wrong I'd actually be happy because I'd rather other guys got the minutes too, but I just don't see that from most of the trends I've seen from Fran the first 7 seasons.

I'm fine with those first two points. I love Baer coming off the bench but he will be effective either way.

I actually think Pemsl is more of a 5 of Cook. Pemsl is a actually pretty good at maintaining verticality and also using his girth to move people out of the lane. According to this season in review article Pemsl was actually pretty good according to advanced D stats compared to our other bigs.

Moss was one of the better on ball defenders we had last year.
That might be true, compared to our other players... yes. Compared to Clemens/MG? Not so much... as I said, he needs to take it to another level. The whole team does, truthfully.

Starters:
Jbo
Moss
Baer
Cook
Wagner

Bench:
Williams - spot minutes at PG, maybe a few at 2 (maybe 10 minutes at PG, 5 at the 2)
Ellingson
Nunge
Pemsl
Kriener

If Garza comes in ready to play as a freshman, he could be the backup 5. If that happens, I still think there's potential for Kriener to take Peml's minutes. Cordell had a great year and shot such a high percentage but I still think Kriener has more long term potential because of his outside shooting ability.
What concerns me is the drop-off from JBo to whoever is his backup at Point guard.
Solid guard play is what puts you deep into March Madness, which means you need a star at PG and a really, really solid back-up to give crucial breather minutes to or in case of injury/foul trouble.

You want your best player on the floor the vast majority of the time at any given position. Jordan is heads and shoulders better than Williams, I am fine if Jordan play 35 MPG. I don't want to strip away 10 MPG from Jordan just to put a clearly inferior player in Williams on the floor.

The star PG will get 30-33 minutes a game - and you have 7 to 10 minutes to divvy up between Williams and Ellingson and they can be on the floor with better ball handling 3's and 4's.

I don't disagree with this, but you don't want to burn him out either. To me, 30 to 32 minutes is about right.

Just my 2¢ .. .. GO HAWKS!!!

I wonder if there is a difference in how worn out someone gets who lives the college life, goes to practices, does individual workouts, travels, and plays 32 minutes per game and someone who lives the college life, goes to practices, does individual workouts, travels, and plays 35 minutes per game.

I think Fran has a plan for Uhl. I think when JB needs a breather, he's going to put Uhl on the point. Here's the Uhl lineup:

Point Guard - Uhl
Shooting Guard - Baer
Small Forward - Nunge
Power Forward - Cook
Center - Kreiner

You could sub a few guys out here and there, but it's conceivable that you could put a group out there where the smallest guy is 6'7" or 6'8". Uhl's handles are pretty damn good and from what I've heard, Nunge is similar, although we haven't seen that against B10 opponents.

Pretty serious length...any way you want to frame it.

You do realize there's more to PG than dribbling it up court and having good handles right??

Uhl playing PG would be a terrible idea

I think that wear and tear factor increases the closer you play to the basket.
