Wave

This is exactly why I hated this tradition from the very begining. Its painted as this voluntary thing that should be a nice thing, but is quickly turned into this guilt-fest for those that are not interested in participating in this new "tradition".
For those of you that are demanding that anyone "has" to participate, you ought to be ashamed of yourself. Do if you want yourself, but you need to stop short of forcing anybody to do it.
Remind me to have my kids not trick or treat at your house... You sound like someone that hates sick kids in hospitals that only would like for their favorite players to wave up at them for a few seconds. If guilt tripping and shaming is what it takes to get people to do the right thing then the result is what it should be. That says more about those without the common sense/dignity to figure it out on their own. Not the other way around. I bet you don't hold doors for ladies either. It's too bad that the most basic of common sense isn't in most folks nowadays. Is it a crime nowadays to be a complete douche? No they'll let ya walk the streets a free man for it. But I have no problem pointing out to others if you are one.

I think players that aren't "engaged" should do it if they want, but I wouldn't break up sideline meetings just to do it.

Mighty productive meetings, they are...
"Ok, guys! GUYS! Dial it in here, guys! Heady stuff, need ur focus!!
Akrum, be ready! Runnin u short side to start this series. Nate, you're next; rolling u left! If things break down, ignore the green to the stix and keep eyes downfield, then dump it! We still have 3rd to go. Most likely coming back to u AW, short side, only, this time, keep it inside tackle. Go execute, guys!

Heaven forbid such a trivial distraction interrupt the decision making process of that awesome brain trust.

KF has a lot of control in the A Dept. No way he wasn't involved in the decision to do the wave. 10 seconds. 10 whole seconds. Come across as typical KF. Disinterested.

Some kids are there long term and 10 seconds is too long. Other kids are in and out in a few days with serious things. It' not a big deal just to do it. I would imagine the coaches/teams that do it once would do it 6/7 times a year.

He's so disinterested, the bastard, all he did was write a check. Oh, the outrage!

Good God, what happens when you fall off a horse as high as yours?!

It's not even so much a moral thing as a common sense thing. Take off your Herky glasses for a second say it's just two schools you don't know or care anything about. If the away school is doing it yet the home team isn't it looks not only head scratching bad it looks downright terrible due to how simple of a gesture it is to wave for 10 seconds or less.
I find it incredulous that both Iowa's coaches and players aren't doing it and that there are fans making excuses for them to not to. 10 seconds or less. Nobody can convince me that during that time Iowa's coaches would be passing along some kind of knowledge that'd be game changing important that they couldn't convey to them 10 seconds later... Why is doing such a great thing that is so simple being made out to be an impossibility?
I'm not making any excuses for Coach Ferentz not doing it, and my guess is he's not making any excuses either. I just hope some mindless reporter doesn't ask him about this at his press conference. However, I'll bet a buck someone wades into it, feeling all good about him or herself as the question is spewed forth for all to hear. The Tom Rinaldi piece from ESPN tells me that Coach Ferentz doesn't have to answer to anyone about any of this. And it's not about the money.

So MN players and coaches left the sideline to get a better angle to wave at the kids during 'our' new tradition. I believe IL did as well. I put quotes around our because it should be including the Iowa players and coaches too. Yet only a few players on the sidelines seem to be participating. I'm not saying they should stand there at attention for the entire 2 min timeout waving but if they all would for 5-10 seconds even would that be the end of the world? That's who those kids are really wanting to wave back and forth with. Sure a stadium full of strangers is cool too. But the players that they know the names of waving back would mean more and the fact other schools are doing it and ours aren't just doesn't look good...

This was initially intended for the fans to turn and wave. I'm not so butt hurt that the players and/or staff don't partake as they have 60 seconds or so to talk with the players with the raucous that's going on during that timeout. I mean that is why everyone is there, to see the Hawks play well.

That pretty much sums it up period to me.

I dunno, when I coach in basketball, it never seems like you have enough time during a timeout and always feel rushed. It never seems like you have enough time to explain a set play or get stated what want to the players. All of a sudden the horn blows and the ref is coming over to get the teams out there. I know it doesn't seem much to you, but these coaches (especially KF) try to use every second they can. Iowa has 7-8 home games a year. I am pretty sure they did it the first game.

Yes, the thing is getting out of control fast. Hopefully it settles down after this year and at least the fans continue to do it. Players if they want.

Well stated.

These players spend 365 days a year training behind the scenes to play in 12 football games. I have no problem with them trying to stay focused on those 12 games and let the fans take care of the outside stuff.

The Iowa players and KF do more for the sick kids in the hospital than any of us.

PS - I demand during night games the football players bring their cell phones on the sidelines to wave their flashlights along with the rest of the fans. Sure it violates the rules, but if they don't then they don't care about sick kids.

PPS - everyone watching the game on tv from home better livestream themselves waving to the kids in the hospital too. Otherwise you don't care about sick kids.

Still hate it? Or do you hate it even more now that the coaches and players are participating in it? Or do you think they were 'forced' into it? I think it was brought to their attention how that looks when other schools are doing it and they weren't and common sense prevailed.

I bet Urban Meyer never lets O$U participate in any "ritual" at an opponent's house ever again.

You make that sound like what Iowa's doing is satanic or something. I don't know when OSU is to play in Kinnick again but that hospital isn't going anywhere and if Meyer is still their coach when that day comes I'd take that bet. Waving to kids in the hospital like they did is a great thing and for him to even insinuate that it was 'bad luck' for them to have taken part in would bring on some blowback he wouldn't want any part of.

Just saying he will try and be "focused" on teams of our "typical" caliber from now on. There is some credibility to the idea that taking focus off the game may be a hindrance.

You sound like that OSU fan that someone posted his you tube deal on earlier that was blaming them losing on it. For crying out loud if it's not the pink locker room now it's this? Let's not sell what our guys did short. I refuse to do that. I watched every snap of that game twice. If you want to look at a 'turning point' of the game I'd say it was when Bosa head butted Stanley. It was tied at the time I believe and if not for that Iowa is punting to them. Instead we got 15 yards a first down and scored on the next play and 31 strait points later the rest is history...
