Watched Nebraska - Iowa 2014 Again on BTN

Wasn't exactly Mabin best game of the season.

Or Lomax. Hell the entire punt coverage team ran down with maybe 2 guys that stayed in their lanes, TWICE!! That's jr high fundamentals. My new season hope is washing away remembering the coaching staff and their performance last year. Ugh

IIRC, Nebby threw two wild long bombs late in that game also. They were behind, desperate but they knew how conservative KF was playing in the 4th qtr. Nebby had nothing to lose and those two long bombs were up for grabs and they made plays. The Punt returns were the other big plays and if your punter can just give you 40 yards with some hang time then no problem.

KF and GD would not even attempt passes like that in a game, they surely didnt against Maryland late in the game.

It was very watchable until the second punt return. After that, I knew it was over. Nice scouting job by the coaches...smfh. Even I knew you don't punt to that guy, especially twice! He himself expressed surprise after the game that the Hawks were dumb enough to do that.

The coaches instructions were specific. Punt it out of bounds. Nobody on that staff was surprised what that punt return guy (Parson-els?)could do.

I dont disagree that JR had a bad game. He did. Missed open guys, turnovers, etc. but he had played terrifically against Wiscy the week before (and vs NW before that) and had earned the trust of the coaches. He shares some of the blame for the Nebby loss, no doubt. But blame also must go on the special teams and the defense. Let's not forget the D gave up the lead (17 points in 1 1/2 quarter).

*also, the ball was moving when Bell "caught" the game winner. Just sayin'...

Welp this is something we can certainly agree on. The decision to stick with Jake the Snake when he piddled away the ISU game, almost pizzed away the Ball St. game, and put us in the hole to Pitt was just pure idiocy. The game has pass KF by in many ways, and this is one of them. He simply doesn't know what buttons to push to win games on Saturday, and he certainly has never known how to game plan to win games. He is gonna line up and do the same freaking thing he did 12 years ago no matter how different the makeup of his team.
you are exactly right. I have been saying in the recruiting threads that I hope KF proves us all wrong and that I've been somewhat happy with recruiting this summer. But when I think back to games like these, it's hard to see that things are going to change no matter who we have out there. Incompetent is the only word I can find to describe the coaching last year for the Hawks.

I hate games like that where one play coulda shoulda woulda changed things.. Either of the punt returns, Jake missing a wide open Powell, Him throwing that stupid pick in the end zone... Change any one of those things and we win and don't go on to get crushed by TN in that bowl game. Would be interesting to see what the domino effect of that would have been.

JR had plenty of games as bad prior to Nebraska. The fact that it took to the 13th game of the season for Ferentz to make a change is all that needs to be said about his inability to effectively manage this program.

Bingo. And it's nothing new, this is the Ferentz way. He'd still be clinging to the bow of the titanic saying "let's give this thing a little more time"

The team has suffered because KF just can't seem to adapt like most coaches do over time. I really hoped that the 2012 changes would refresh the offensive game planning at least, but it didn't really. Modified the passing game is all, but not an upgrade, more a lateral move or even a downgrade.

I know for a fact that when Paul Rhoads came to ISU he really felt they could/would beat Iowa that year (2009 year), as he felt the scheme was easy to defend. Welp they got their doors blown off 2 years in a row, cause Iowa's talent was near elite those two years (yeah I know 2010 was a disappointment, but they had talent up and down that roster). Fast forward 2 years, when all that talent left, and Iowa is working with less talent, now Rhoads (or insert any sh!tty programs coach here) can take advantage of Iowa's crappy, predictable schemes. Iowa hasn't had a real RB in 4 years, and that is just inexcusable at this level.

The crappy scheme just gives Iowa no margin for error. We simply have to get the running game back that teams have to respect in order for KF crappy offensive schemes to work.

I don't think that anyone would argue in hindsight that Rudock's performances in the Ball State, Iowa State, and Pitt games should have earned him the opportunity to hold the clipboard for the rest of the season. Especially when you consider how CJ performed in the 2nd half of the Pitt game. He should have been given the starting position after that.

The Iowa State game still gives me nightmares. That was the worst coached game I have ever seen from an offensive decision making standpoint. Both in terms of roster moves and play calling. It was horrendous.

2012 was his chance to really reboot the program. It had gone stale, specifically with the meltdown in 2010, and the so-so 2011. Instead, he makes some very odd hiring choices. Instead of a fresh start on defense, cause no one was going to replicate what Norm could do in adaptation....he hires Phil Parker, thinking there would be no trade off. Instead, we have given up more big plays than we ever have, and while we do blitz a little more, and show some different packages.....we appear to be worse as a unit. Granted, our recruiting to fill gaps has been horrendous and we saw it in 2014 with LB.

On offense, he goes with Greg Davis. One of the more baffling hires I can think of. The guy was retired, no one wanted him, and yet we bring him in. And the biggest mismatch of all with his ideas, and KF ideas. While we haven't had great talent on offense the past three years.....I still look back to JVB Junior year under KOK, and then his transition to GDGD in 2012.

Rudock was serviceable in 2013, but in 2014 he was so inconsistent. There didn't appear to be any growth.

This is a make or break year for KF. I honestly think he's done, and no re-dedication to the sport will help. We heard it in his January press conference, we'll still do the same things as in 1999, we just have to execute better.

the problem is we don't have the talent to deal with the bounces of the game anymore. We have to execute a flawless gameplan on both sides fo the ball in order to beat MAC teams, let alone Big10. We are so lucky that we play one of the easiest schedules in the country.

We'd get blown out if we were in the Big12 or SEC.

Did you just refer to the modification of the passing game as a "lateral move"? Good play on words.

A couple of observations:

1) Rudock - I remember he didn't have a good day that day. Honestly, it was awful. Not just the two turnovers in the red zone in the first half, but the decisions were unbelievably poor throughout the game. I can't see him being missed this year...unless CJ gets hurt. He's fine throwing when he isn't moving or isn't under pressure, but when he gets pressure or has to get it out quickly, it usually has nothing on it...or is inaccurate. A few of his long throws were no where near anyone...and guys were open.

2) Outside Zone - What the hell. Sure, Canzeri had a few nice runs in the first quarter...but when I counted 7 for 10 went for zero or negative yardage at one point...why in the hell are you running that crap with Weisman? Nebraska safeties were reading the TE key and every time they looked to block they were shooting a seam to the outside and stopping the play. If we don't have any other play action off that, other than the bootleg, give it up...or go to man blocking or trap somebody.

3) After a good game against Wisconsin...our LBs were terrible in run defense. I know Gordon had a big day, but we beat the crap out of him and he had one 85 yard run or something like that to pad his numbers. Against Nebraska...these guys were completely out of position half the time...especially the guy that left the team...Spearman Not going to be missed either.

About half way through the 3rd quarter, Nebraska made adjustments along the D Line and the runs that were 10 yards in the 1st half became 1 yard or less. But, true to our experience, Iowa kept doing the same thing - wasting down after down, wasting series after series. I started to get frustrated and foresaw the outcome. Yes Nebraska looked crapy but they have athletes. And I figured, eventually their guys would start making plays. Iowa needed to keep scoring. But they kept punting. Nebraska started scoring and KF just....well. We saw what happened.

^ Disgusting. Good assessment, and what a nightmare. I still say we would have won if it wasn't for those two blown punts/coverages.

I was at this game. My feet were freezing for 3 hours. I knew when I arrived at my seat and saw a thick layer of frozen ice on top of the Concrete below was in trouble. With the millions of dollars spent on the program one would think they could afford some ground water heat in 2015. End of my mini rant..

P.S. I'm a heating and cooling guy. #wanna make the fans happier
