Watch Mike Daniels

There were several layers to this.

Going into the last year of the contract, he was scheduled to make a little over 11 Million. Since he was starting to show signs of breaking down, the Packers obviously had some concerns as to whether he would be a sound investment. I haven't heard whether or not they tried to negotiate a re-worked deal with him, but, several efforts were made to trade him and there were no takers.

Also, the Packers are going to need some freed up money on the line for Kenny Clark, who is up for a big cash in, and, also just resigned Dean Lowry.

Hate to see Mike go, but it looks like a solid financial gamble.

On another message board Im on a guy laid it out pretty well.

Too expensive, Too injury prone, and UFA after the season. and a bunch of signings at his position.

He never had a chance this season in GB

He needs to get healthy and another team will jump on him.

Truth is...average length of an NFL career is about 3 1/2 years. Mike is going into his 8th year. Even if he doesn't make it back (which I expect he will) he's had a successful career.

Technically the right move, but man I hate the Pack cutting Iowa guys. It already bit them in the ass with Micah Hyde.

Hmm wonder if Rodger's contract had anything to do with the financial side of this decision. Glad they got their QB locked up for the future. Who needs a supporting cast. As a fan that despises GB I can only hope they continue to bring in quality players and hope that Daniels gets picked up by winner.

Probably. The salary cap brought a high degree of parity to the NFL, but it has also ruined the quality of play because it created a youth movement. Basically there are two paths to winning now. One is to have a veteran franchise QB who is paid a ton and pray that he is good enough to overcome the shortcomings on the roster that his large salary will create. Tom Brady. The other is to get really lucky in the draft and have a great team around a really good young QB and hope you win during the window. Russell Wilson and Patrick Mahomes.

Totally agree. The way I see it, it's also got to be about the player. Rookie salaries suck and that second salary is about making bank. That said if you continue to push the envelope after that second payday and push to hard your sacrificing team success to pad the pockets. Rodger's got that monster contract, but now his team will suffer as they are unable to bring in talent outside of the draft due to financial constraints.

Rodgers got his contract, GB got their QB, and the rest of the league benefits as GB will struggle to surround him with any kind of talent. Everyone wins.
