Virginia

I can't help but think what could have been for this years iowa team when I watch them win the ACC. This is a team that iowa beat at their place last year and their season is going tge way most here had hoped Iowa's would've gone. If only we could have had a closer.

Oh well. Ifs and buts. Bring on the boilermakers

Iowa doesn't make last second shots. Other teams do. I can only remember three last second/seconds shot by the Hawks since 1980. I never knew about the Cyrus Tate Buzzer Beater because I didn't remember watching the game, until BCL and another HN poster mentioned it.....

In 1980 Steve Waite made a last second shot at the rim. One of Lute's best plays. Steve was wide open under the basket and we passed it to him for the VIctory putting us in the Final Four...

In the 1976/87 season, De. Tom's first, Kevin Gamble made a last second shot against Oklahoma, coached by Billy Tubbs. That win put us into the Elite Eight.....

The only other last second shot I remember was James Moses tipping the ball in to beat Indiana at Bloomington. Bobby K disliked it.....

That is four remembered last second shots in 34 years. Average it out to 1 last second tip every eight years. That means that we are due somewhere between now and The 20/21 season.....

Other teams seems to make last second shots against us every year, more that one team, usually more.....

Dame Fortune smiles not at the Hawkeyes.....

Two reasons that Virginia is the 2013-2014 anti-Iowa:

1) They are the #1 scoring defense (54.7 / game) and kempon has their adj-D at #3. Defense is pride, effort and, come tournament time, when shooting slumps can happen on neutral courts and different venues, defense travels.

Iowa is 84th in NCAA and 10th in B1G in scoring defense (allowing nearly 70 ppg). We've witnessed over the last week that they are far worse than that, right now. Iowa's strategy regarding defense is less about locking teams down and preventing them from scoring and more about playing the percentages of the other team -- let them get their shots but expect they will miss more than not -- and don't allow 2nd chances.

Last year, when Iowa was a sucky shooting team, their only hope was to focus on defense. This year, Iowa has a sucky defense because they simply are not emphasizing it. Their entire focus is on quick transition offense and outscoring other teams. The problem occurs when other teams have good shooting nights (fOSU, Wisconsin, Minny, Indiana) and decide to outrun Iowa (Minny and Indiana) because the Hawks aren't focused on defending. As Iowa experiences more and more of those prolonged scoring droughts (anything over 4 - 5 minutes will doom the Hawks) they simply don't have the defense to weather it.

2) Tighter rotation. 8 guys avg 10+ minutes / game. That 8th guy = 11.8 mpg. Top 7 guys go 18.6 - 30.7 mpg.

Meanwhile, Iowa has 10 guys avg 12+ minutes / game. The 10th guy (Clemmons) = 12.8 mpg. The next 9 all average over 16.3+ mpg!! One of your key strengths this year -- size and length -- have your post players (Woody, Gabe, McCabe) all averaging only 16.3 mpg. Take a look at this and go figure ... Iowa Official Athletic Site - Men's Basketball Talk about complete dilution of talent, mismanagement of personnel due to a blind perception that quantity = quality.

It's the old football cliche, "When you have 2 QB's, you have none." Well, it appears when you have 2 platoons in basketball, you have none.

Our D is not close to last seasons......

Our transition game isn't working well this season. Other teams with or without a made basket race back to defend and it has affected our game......

Virginia plays in a 15 team conference with the 5 best teams being Virginia, Syracuse, Duke, North Carolina and Pittsburgh. Next in line is Clemson...don't know if they could beat any B1G team other than maybe NW on a neutral court. Virginia lost on their home court by 10 to Wisconsin...puts them no better than 4th in the B1G.

Now let's go back to those other 4 quality teams in the conference.

@ Duke - Lost
NC - Won
@ Pitt - Won
Syracuse - Won

That's right they played the other 4 decent teams once each. Did I mention they are in a 15 team conference? You have to go all the way down to 7th place Florida State to find a team they played twice. Virginia would be middle of the pack in the B1G.

I'm glad I took a look at their schedule...might have actually taken them beyond the 1st weekend of the NCAA in my brackets.

Is that what you think is going on here? I even point out in my OP that the season isn't over, but as of today I bet it is way gooder being a Cav fan than where we are.

I think you need to read your op again. You a) don't point out that the season isn't over, and b) repeatedly refer to this Iowa team in the past tense indicating....you guessed it, the season IS over.

Fail.

"and their season is going the way most here had hoped Iowa's would've gone "

You will notice the current tense of "is going," hence the implication that I am referring to the current status of the season. Which is obviously not over. Yes, those games up to this point are referred to in the past tense, as they obviously occurred in the past.

Also, i would like to point out my reference to the Boilermakers game which, as of 8 AM yesterday, had not yet taken place. Again pointing out that the season is not over, just that the season up to this point had not gone the way many had hoped.

Now, you can stop being a dou*** like you have in the past, and then I will only refer to your douchiness in the past tense as if it IS over, or you can continue to be a dou*** and I will refer to it for the past, present, and future.

I knew the ACC was garbage outside of the top 4/5 teams this year but I had no idea how easy UVA's schedule was. KenPom backs this up as they have the 15th hardest schedule in the ACC, interestingly enough Duke and UNC had the 13th and 14th toughest schedules. Syracuse and Pitt were at 7th and 8th and the team with the toughest schedule was Maryland, a nice going away present from the ACC.

You understand that the above quote LITERALLY REFERS TO IOWA'S SEASON IN THE PAST TENSE?!?!

No, it doesn't. But English is hard.

So you choose the douchiness route then?

No, it's easy. If you wanted to phrase this in the present progressive tense, you'd have written: "...and their season is going the way most here would have hoped Iowa's would be." As written, you could be referring to any completed Iowa season ever.

...and I love how you are actually calling me names. I don't even know who you are and you seem to have a lengthy dossier on me. I must be doing something right. I'll stick with what I'm doing, thanks.

You got me. I was actually referring to the 1972 Iowa squad. Weird that nobody else picked up on that.

Now, back to the topic at hand. Virginia has done what Iowa should have done this season (up to this point Mr. Grape, since the implication is hard for you to pick up). They have taken care of the gimmes, and when the lights were brightest they have responded very well.

Also, since you seem to disagree with me, is it safe to assume that you prefer the way Iowa's season has gone UP TO THIS POINT(again, you struggle with implied statements) over that of Virginia's?

At least they will have some idea of what it's like to play in the B1G next year. Virginia wouldn't know what hit them...going from this year's schedule to a B1G schedule.

Luke Recker in the Big Ten tournament?

No, I don't. I already answered that question (you struggle with literal statements). But if we go to the Elite 8 and they lose in the second round I will prefer our season to theirs.

This is getting circular and immature. Sorry you don't like me boat. Go hawks.

I can't comprehend anyone not agreeing with this statement. I'm not taking sides in the pointless debate between the 2 of you...just agreeing with this comment.

Right. So I am trying to discuss reality and actual results while you are strictly speaking hypothetically.

He said he'd prefer Iowa's season to be where Virginia's is at but if Iowa goes further in the NCAA Tournament, he would take Iowa's decent regular season over Virginia's great regular season and earlier exit in the NCAA Tournament.

Captain obvious isn't needed.

Guess what. If I got into a car accident today, I am not going to be happy since I might win the lottery tomorrow.

This is kind of a dumb argument. I think everyone can agree that we wish Iowa's season would have gone as well as Virginia's up to this point. I also think we can all agree we would take Iowa's regular season over Virginia's if the Hawks end up playing further into March.
