Vines a Hawk

You mention that you are "not super interested in under 6 foot possession receivers". Julian Edelman, the Superbowl MVP says hello. He's 5'10" and 198 and he just abused the Rams all night long...all night, all night...all night long.

I think it's pretty early (commit day) to start panning people, right. Let's let him drop his first pass before we start relegating him to the "not super interested" category.
You realize who you’re talking to, right?

Wadley ran a 4.59 & 4.54 at the NFL combine.

His 4.66 as a high school player isn't all that far off what Wadley ran as as 5 year college player who was one of, if not the fastest player with the ball in his hands, Iowa has ever had.

His top end speed is fine. His 10 yard split time is what I'd like to see and I don't know of high school camps that test that. That's the acceleration test and more of a true indicator of his football speed.
I think Wadley has to go down in history as Iowa's quickest RB. But as far as pure speed, that honor goes without much debate to Tavian Banks.

How Ferentz and Bell haven’t hired you as a scout is beyond me.

Thanks for the analysis, I just sent Brian an email telling him we definitely need to pass on this guy. Man am I glad you’re out there doing the leg work and posting the cold hard truth before it’s too late.
I can always count on Frau to blow a gasket. I wish I could issue Frau a Xanax every time I post. Just my opinion Frau. By the way, what's Iowa's track record with pumping out high-end WR's? I know you're busy throwing rose petals at the Ferentzs' holy feet, but I challenge you to look up every once in awhile.

Who’s blowing the gasket? Lol

Meh. I watched Vines' film. 5'11" and under I want blazing speed. Not sure Vines has it. His most redeeming quality is holding onto the ball after he catches it. Hope he proves me wrong.

i've seen reports that he ran a 4.46 at his boston college workout. i'll take it.

Do you have an answer to my question? Iowa's WR track-record? You've got 20 years to peruse. ...and Kevin Kasper was Fry's recruit.

What does Vines have to do with previous 20 years? When you can answer THAT, I guess we'll have a semblance of relevance. What I saw in his films was good acceleration, and a guy who could catch passes from a lefty QB with a throwing motion that rivals that of Uncle Rico. That equates to "skill", as far as I'm concerned.

I think it's glaringly obvious Bob--he's a WR recruited under Ferentz. We were discussing the coaches' ability to evaluate WR talent. Ferentz has the longest tenured track record in college football showing it's not his strength. How is this even up for debate?

Hey Hawkleberry,

It must just irk you that KF has been cornholing you for so long. Every punt on fourth and one in the opponents territory, every outside zone on 3rd and 7, running into 9 man fronts...it's all designed to ram the elephant dick just a little further into your keister...and KF ain't going anywhere until he wants to retire. Your only hope is that BF becomes the next head coach, so you can keep your anal cavity in shape. Do you like apples?

Huh... Keep your alternate lifestyle fantasies to yourself.

You mentioned his lack of speed. You then segued to irrelevant info of past recruits.

WR may not be a "strength" for us, but we have certainly had serviceable ones. And if you go by "drafted by the NFL", it's pretty much the ONLY "weakness" the program has. Damn near every other position, save PK/P has seen multiple players drafted. Hell, even LS guys have made the NFL.

Yes, he's no Damond Powell or Smith-Marsette--he has average WR speed at 5'11". Ferentzs' 20 year history of not recruiting or producing top-level WR is irrelevant to the discussion about recruiting WR's?? Come on Bob. Yes, I agree--WR is a weakness...TE is not.

So you'd rather he be a burner that runs shitty routes and drops routine passes?

Multiple analysts have mentioned what a good route runner he is, and that's where he gets his separation, so I'm gonna take their word for it over yours.

You came in the thread to shit on this kid, don't get pissy when someone shits on your take.

No, at 5'11", I'd rather him be a burner that catches passes. Powell and Smith-Marsette caught passes against HS competition too.

Getting pissy? Apparently if one's argument is adverse to others it makes them pissy--and others not? I'm defending my argument just like you. My argument is very strong: Ferentz hasn't recruited top-end WR's in 20 years. Who can argue this? I'd be celebrating if this kid's tape looked like Tyrone Tracy. It doesn't. And I, of course, have nothing personal against the kid (as you seem to suggest). But I'm not going to pretend every player is Walter Payton just because he committed to the Hawks--I'm pointing out a systemic problem area in team personnel.

Our receivers over the past 20 years have been some of the best blocking WRs in college football. You have to look at all aspects of the position to really gain a perspective of how good it is. Shonn Greene probably isn't the Doak Walker award winner without Brodell and DJK making downfield blocks. Iowa is known as "blocking WR university" in most circles.

Just out of curiosity, I wonder how many WRs Iowa has recruited in recent years -- and played in games -- that were 6'4" or taller. (Not counting TEs....and McNutt doesn't count, because he was recruited as a QB).
Iowa is a bottom feeder for skill position talent....size doesn't matter.

First, you don't really know how fast he is. And speed is but one component of a good WR. And it's hardly the most crucial. And Powell was proof of that.

Speed isn't as important if you're tall--more so if you're short--if you're a great route runner with average speed you can be a possession guy--easley--but this kid doesn't look as dynamic as easley at this point--his tape didn't have that wow factor. This kid may be a great surprise--he just doesn't seem much different than our typical run of the mill receiver recruit. I hope he surprises.

Maybe he's being groomed to be a punter.
