Uthoff to Iowa: How did it Happen? Impact?

If "Tampering" is as I understand it, Direct contact with coaches, then I find all of the accusations kind of funny.

That's not to suggest it's impossible, just pretty unnecessary. The Uthoff's live and work in a community just a few miles from the Univeristy. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to circumvent the intent of the "Tampering Rules" with out actually breaking them in any way what so ever.

The Cedar Rapids / Iowa City area is like Mayberry when it comes to the U of I .

Perault also said that Aaron White was a bad pickup and not Big 10 material and used it as proof that Fran's staff couldn't recruit.

What would be kind of funny is if Fran didn't even want Uthoff.

I think Fran wanted Uthoff, and he made a hard push for him. I think the in state kid that Fran didn't really want was Abramson, and Washpun. He made offers so late to those guys....I think he only did it as a show of "wanting" in state kids, but he didn't really go hard after them like Uthoff, Ogelsby, Woody, and MG....

You just can`t judge by cover of the book unless you read the book....

Fran recruited him before he chose wisconsin. His buddies from Iowa AAU ball play for Fran at Iowa, and I am sure he has talked to them.

Iowa is under no obligation to Uthoff in terms of a scholly, but I presume he will eventually get one. I really doubt that Uthoff was on Fran's radar until he announced his departure from Wisky, and even then that it was a longshot, due to the 20k it will cost Uthoff.

I love that he will be playing PTL so that Iowa fans can gauge his development since leaving CR. He is a good shooter from the perimeter, and tall guys that can shoot from the arc and run are always nice in Fran's system. Now, Fran needs to nail down that shooting guard from Michigan,EC Matthews, and our 2013 recruiting will be wrapped up. Then on to the 2014 class with 3 schollys to replace McCabe,Marble, and Melsahn. Will need a guard, small forward and power forward in that class,I presume.

The good news (pointed out to me last month) is that tuition is only about $8,000. That doesn't include room/board/books, but I am assuming he'll stay at his folks' house or live with someone off-campus. Who knows? If he does stay at home, $8k isn't terribly bad to pay for one year. It's a $8k mistake he made back in 2010, but at least he still gets to play for Iowa.

I would agree with this.
The only high priority in-state guy in the last two years that Fran has not signed is Marcus Paige.
Pretty cool.

Nonsense. If Fran didn't want Abramson and Washpun he wouldn't have offered. Offering them late just means he missed on his first choices.

Say whatever you want. We could have offered at any time, but we wait until other high options were on the table and they were close to choosing. If we wanted em, we offer earlier and go hard after them. Before Washpun got the offer, I don't think Fran had hardly even talked to him.....didn't come across to me as the way Fran normally treats "high priority" kids.....considering during the same time he didn't miss a game of Woody's. Just saying.

That could be all true but the fact is he DID offer them, thus he must have wanted them.

The real point is that Fran now has all of the the high-priority in-state preps he went after (except Paige). This is really encouraging. No one is saying he didn't want the others... but he got the one's that were on the top of his list. That's huge... and something neither of Iowa's previous two coaches were able to consistently do.

I think those guys were more along the lines of getting some hay in the barn. You need bodies, too and have 13 rides...only 7 or 8 are going to play real minutes in a given season.

This is from a Rivals article last year by Tom Kakert of HawkeyeReport.com, re: Kale

While some might wonder about Iowa offering after other schools had already extended their scholarship opportunity, Abrahamson said his high school coach, former Hawkeye Jeff Horner, has been very good about explaining the situation with Iowa.

"Coach Horner has been great about keeping me in the loop about what was going on at Iowa with their scholarships. He told me they had a log jam at my position and that they weren't going to offer me unless there was a real opportunity for me."

He was a fallback..and when Hubbard left, they offered him shortly thereafter...and he committed to NW a month later

Sorry Jackl....I should have been more clear.....Those guys were fallback recruits, not top priority recruits. I think JD said it well here:

Fran doesnt throw his players under bus and he was completely honest and realistic.

I really like that Fran knows how to play this game.

You got to get your hands dirty be successful in this environment.

If Fran did a little tampering in this case I could not possibly care less.

Bo tampered with Brust, got the rule changed and subsequently shot himself in the foot by ending up with the much shorter end of the stick.

This really couldn't have worked out any better for Iowa.
