Uthoff concerns

What Gabe did to get ejected wasn't even that tough of a play... The kids momentum was the only reason he went down to the floor the way he did.... But yea there isn't an enforcer on this team at all. Of all the things McCabe brought to the team that we didn't like. That was the one thing I loved. He gave an attitude that you weren't going to walk all over us out there... This team is finesse all the way...

I have a feeling all the other conference schools would love to have Jared Uthoff on their team.

I always say this many times in past, you just have to have an attitude to bang with anyone. It still has nothing to do with talents. Talents don't alway equal wins . Fran came here with attitude to win games, B1G hate his attitudes and even told GB to toot his horn.

The Wild Bull loved to bang, Atomic. One of the ESPN writers said he threw Trice to the floor like a sweaty jockstrap......

Out of all the things to be concerned about with this team, we pick Uthoff….

Good point Bend....our guard play sucks a$$ and Jarrod needs to play w/a little swagger, but outside of that he's been playing decently.....we need to get some "tude" out of this team (besides watching Fran's "tude")

I believe Uthoff to be the best player on the team. If that's the case then your best player needs to have some toughness to him. Mental toughness.

White has been by far the most productive and consistent player thus far. He’s extremely tough.

I wouldn’t call Uthoff mentally weak. He’s an easy target for that criticism because he can’t physically impose his will. Take the MSG tourney for example, he played 66 min in 20 hours vs two good teams. He struggled in the 1st half vs Syracuse but lead a huge comeback going 5-6 with 2 blocks and 3 steals down the stretch when everyone was gassed. That demonstrated mental toughness to me.

If your going to pick on a player or players being mentally weak, I don't think Uthoff is the guy. Some of the guards would be some good prospects. Woodbury, Uthoff, and White are good players, but three guys can't beat a really good team.

This is where a coach needs to know his player. Screaming at a player might work for that player; another player may need encouragement to do his role successfully. Human beings are not automotons of assembly lines when pushing one or two buttons gets the desired results for each piece that comes down the line.I am sure JU wants to please his coach. He might be the personality-type that an abrasive negative scream causes him to clam up thinking that it is safer to not take risks to avoid another negative scream.I saw that in Little League and youth football and high school. I am sure it doesn't disappear in college sports.

you could very well be correct ... but, man, if i were that type of kid, I'd probably go ahead not sign up to play for Bo Ryan, THEN Fran McCaffery.

The guards just aren't that talented to be considered mentally weak. A guy with a crap load of talent that disappears more often than not and has to be basically prodded with a stick by his coach to take any kind of meaningful action is either mentally weak or doesn't really care.

I agree with you for the most part. Maybe just maybe the guards aren't that mentally tough either and it has something to do with their overall play as well. But they clearly aren't that talented or have a very high ceiling to expect much from them on their best days. Uthoffs ceiling is pretty darn high if he'd get alittle bigger stronger and just have the attitude that nobody can stop me and give me the ball. He passes up too many shots in what look like catch and shoot situations. Not to mention I've seen him guarded by 6-5 guys that have no business guarding him. Get his butt to the high post get him the ball with some room to do something and he should get a good look every time.

GABE GOT EJECTED!!!!!

But yeah, we're a bunch of long, athletic but skinny dudes trying to play in an era of college basketball that is won with physicality and by grinding out a lot of games. The build of our team has never really matched that of a successful Big Ten team which is too bad because we're a lot more exciting to watch when we're on that stupid Wisconsin or Michigan State.

Yeah, Gabe got ejected on a (bad call) hard foul where he got the worst of it (other than the landing).

This.

This leads to him disappearing for long stretches. Almost like he's thinking "I know I SHOULD be the guy, but .... I don't know .... I don't want to be called a ball hog." He's GOT to get over that kind of mentality and shoot with his first open look on each possession. He IS our best player, but doesn't fill up the stats sheets as he should.
