Uthoff concerns

Watched him play vs N Illinois and he just seemed very reluctant to take a shot. Reading FM's comments in the post game it would seem that Fran got on him for an ill advised shot early in the game and Jarrod was scared to do much offensively after that. And that's exactly how he looked in the game. Scared to shoot.

Iowa cannot have that when they get to B1G play. As guard challenged as we all know this team is, they need every bit of offense they can get. I just hope this is not an indication of how emotionally fragile Uthoff is. If Fran McCaffery is your coach, you know that at some point he is gonna unload on you. You don't take it personally.

I've got no problem with any shot he ever takes. Odds are we won't find a better shot before we turn it over anyway. I'll take a contested jumper from Uthoff over a wide open shot from pretty much anyone else on the team. Bad move by Fran in my opinion and I don't say that much...if ever.

If that's truly the case, I would simply urge Jarrod to grow a pair. Take the shot when it's available; if the coach doesn't like it, he'll let you know. Despite coach's mad face, he's not in the position at this time that you are in any danger of riding significant pine.

Hard to believe Fran would be upset with any shot author would take. He has said many times he wants him to take more shots an d be aggressive.

hey, I was having a few beers during the game, so my memory may be a bit off, but I thought JU did a good job of not forcing things. NIU really seemed to jump out on him when he got a touch, so, I felt like he was being responsible. Plus, Woody, GO and White were getting it done. Chalk it up to an off night but not one in which he forced up crappy shots.

This is rare and I hope it doesn't happen again but I agree with Cliche. Uthoff will be up and down all year. His free throw shooting is mental too. But like another poster said, when you have other guys picking up the slack it's fine.

Soft. Mentally and physically soft. Would not want to be going in to a basketball battle with Uthoff.

This is not just against Uthoff, but I think this team is soft, look at the rebound margin against inferior competition. Not at all impressive the last three games. In fact, this should be frightening for Hawk fans.

This team needs a little bit of "bad attitude" to it. I mean towards opponents. As pointed out above, Hawks do seem a little soft.
Woodbury is the only one I can think of who is willing to throw some elbows.

Is this one of those serendipitous moments where autocorrect creates a player's nickname?

Probably not. But I laughed anyway.

Uthoff is the anti McCabe.... Not sure if it's possible for him to toughen up or not but he sure doesn't seem to have an aggressive bone in his body. Weather he doesn't want to be considered a "selfish" player or if he's just passive by nature I dunno. If he's just not wanting to be selfish maybe you can coach that out of him. If he's just passive by nature that's hard to coach out of...

I always say this many times in past, you just have to have an attitude to bang with anyone. It still has nothing to do with talents. Talents don't alway equal wins . Fran came here with attitude to win games, B1G hate his attitudes and even told GB to toot his horn.

GABE GOT EJECTED!!!!!

But yeah, we're a bunch of long, athletic but skinny dudes trying to play in an era of college basketball that is won with physicality and by grinding out a lot of games. The build of our team has never really matched that of a successful Big Ten team which is too bad because we're a lot more exciting to watch when we're on that stupid Wisconsin or Michigan State.

This is where a coach needs to know his player. Screaming at a player might work for that player; another player may need encouragement to do his role successfully. Human beings are not automotons of assembly lines when pushing one or two buttons gets the desired results for each piece that comes down the line.I am sure JU wants to please his coach. He might be the personality-type that an abrasive negative scream causes him to clam up thinking that it is safer to not take risks to avoid another negative scream.I saw that in Little League and youth football and high school. I am sure it doesn't disappear in college sports.

This team is too nice. Woody is the only guy who can bang with the big boys. Certainly an interesting dynamic with a coach who has fire coming out of his pores. Wish the team would show it. It's OK to get ****** off and fired up.

What Gabe did to get ejected wasn't even that tough of a play... The kids momentum was the only reason he went down to the floor the way he did.... But yea there isn't an enforcer on this team at all. Of all the things McCabe brought to the team that we didn't like. That was the one thing I loved. He gave an attitude that you weren't going to walk all over us out there... This team is finesse all the way...
