USC will be a challenge

Here are some highlights. You'll see a lot of really good offense and a lot of really bad defense.

USC vs. UCLA
USC vs. Cal
USC vs. Arizona State
USC vs. Oregon

If we can win the turnover battle and have our offense be productive and keep their defense off the field that is how we win. The hawks need to break tendencies and be aggressive when it counts on offense.

Why would we want to keep their defense off the field?

The air raid will be difficult to stop. Troy Pomalu and Clay Matthews aren’t exactly running out that tunnel for SC. There are plays to be made by the Iowa O against a so-so SC defense.
Brian will cook up a great plan.

Well football may be a dying sport to you but there is still SOOOO MUCH talent in California it is amazing they can feed Boise ST, Utah and Utah St, all the CA teams, Oregon etc!!

They will have very good talent but not sure if they are as tough as Iowa. Smack em hard from the start and keep on pounding them and we will see what they do. I thought one thing about the 2016 Rose Bowl was that from the outset Stanford's Def and Off lines were firing off the ball faster and stronger than Iowa and it set the tone.
California talent used to feed the Huskers...LOL...now our kicker taunts Coach Frost!!!!! Take that Coach Punk!

Looking at the highlights of the usc cal game it is mostly passing for usc and if our corners are in man to man they better not be looking in the backfield but staying right on those receivers.

It looked like Cal just couldnt get much pass rush so when Cal played zone the usc qb had lots of time to wait for a receiver to get open. When hawks are dropping into zone they need quick pressure on the qb.

Will KF want PParker to attack and take chances with some blitzing or will the hawks play more the normal Read type defense and watch for the run on first and second down then go after the passer. I think since usc gets 2/3rds or more of their yardage passing the hawks need to get to the qb quick and often.

I thought early in those highlights that usc's defensive front line and 7 were getting woodshedded by Cal in the run game. That could be a good omen if Goodson is healthy and if the run blocking gets better.

Dont run wide very much on a fast usc defense.

First play from scrimmage - Jet sweep, 2 yard loss
Second play from scrimmage - toss, 1 yard loss
Third play from scrimmage - screen to Goodson, 2 yard gain
Punt
A big game like this is why Coach Kirk made the OC hire that he did...experienced, creative, flexible, bloodline...

Thanks for posting. Watching the game against ASU I heard them say the usc running back is a track speedster and usc had 300 yards passing in the first qtr.

I see a lot of their pass plays they send the running back out to the side as a safety throw for the qb. Going to have to close on them fast if they catch it.

But asu must have shut them down pretty well as usc only scored 3 pts the last over half the game. That speed is going to be tough to defend. Arizona St wasnt a great team record wise but a tough team as I think they beat Oregona at

Gawd I hope not. Power straight at them and see if they can handle it. Maybe their players are soft. Inside zone and power blocking. Some quick throws and get ahead of these guys.

Usc blitzed ASU in those highlights but ASU hung in and slowed usc down on offense and almost won it. Good tape for the coaches.

Now how can KF really prepare a team against better speed except to go right at them. On offense I hope we ditch the outside zone stretch and do with power inside zone and straight ahead blocking like at Nebby this year. In a month BF better find some pass routes against their defense and some blitz blocking or I will be pretty dismayed.

And on defense mix up the coverages a lot to make the qb think and get that pass rush going as I dont think they are a big running team. Need some blitzes especially right up the middle to get the QBs attention and make him tuck the ball back in and get out of rhythm.

The Rose Bowl...the Hawks seemed totally unprepared for the RB speed. Totally.

Not going to lie, it is going to be a tough game. USC has a ton of speed and talent at the skill positions on offense. Good thing is that the quarterback is not a huge threat to run, but you cant give him time. I think their offense is a lot like Minnesota's with more speed. USC's defense is quick but appears that the front 7 is a little undersized for B1G standards. It will be tough to do anything laterally.

Our defense will look the same and I imagine will be in cash almost exclusively. On offense, I would like to see us use a lot of 2 TE sets with LaPorta and Beyer, Goodson, ISM and Tracy to exploit the middle of the field. We can control the clock and should be able to run out of these sets. I think we can take advantage of their linebackers. Dont be alarmed if in the first series one of our WR's gets a step and Stanley air mails one 10 feet over everyone's head. Not a big deal, it will just get in the back of the corners and safeties heads that this guy has a gun. That makes a difference and makes them second guess jumping routes or pressing coverage.

It will be important to get the lead from the beginning to make USC one dimensional. All of those west coast teams seem prone to abandoning the run too early and throw the entire second half. Win first down and get them in third and long and we control the game.

This is Brian's time to shine boys and girls!

I will wait patiently for the evidence that Iowa will be amazed at USC’s speed. Iowa is very fast.

Did you take an alaskan cruise during the last swing out west a few yrs ago? They made iowa look like a bunch of snowmen. If usc gets the ball out quick in space, it could be another reality check. If it gets into a high scoring shootout, iowa fails miserably. If usc plays it straight up, Iowa has a chance in a tug of war as that’s kirks style. Thinking we have a speed advantage is laughable

Slovis is deadly accurate. He is getting 3-4 seconds to pass the ball too. Way too long. I don't know if that is USC's offensive line or opposing defenses. Need to get to this guy in under 3 seconds on a regular basis or it's over.
