USA Today: Iowa No. 69

Number 69 is way too low for any team with 8 returning starters off defense that gave up the 33rd fewest points in the nation the previous year.

Its a good thing the defense is lifting us up. Looking on the offensive side its hard to see how we get out of the top 100, last year with a veteran QB the total offense ranked 116 out of 124. This year our starter will have zero experience taking snaps in D1 and will have to split his practice time as they decide who is the starter. All in all I would say 69th is a pretty good ranking.

I think this team will be way better than 69. If Scherff, Blythe, and Vansloten stay healthy...this is at least an 8 win team. There are 6 guys battling for 2 guard spots...that's a very good problem to have...and a couple of them are veteran guys. When you can run the ball, even when it's expected...well that makes everything a hell of a lot easier in the passing game. When Scherff and Donnal went down last year...well, we could do neither well...and we went down faster than Freddy Mercury.

I'll go on record as saying this team is going to surprise people in a good way.

You're a lot more optimistic than your userID would imply.

If Scherff, Blythe, and Vansloten stay healthy...

Big if. Injuries are a part of the game. The success of this season's offense will be on the shoulders of the line. With a healthy, strong line and two very different backs out of the backfield, we can make up for a lack of experience at QB.

But they have to stay healthy. And that's a big if.

I think we have some depth on the OL, but no one to replace Scherff. He really needs to stay healthy

Great article. Very in depth. I think we'll do slightly better than the 7 wins he suggested, but not quite the 10 wins. Although, it'd be wicked awesome if we did!

This is where I am too. I think low water mark for this team is 6-6.

Based on all their talent? I don't see it as this is a Bigten team with many players that no one in the Bigten wanted. And the Bigten isn't all that good. Fourth or fifth best FB conference.

I would like to know how everyone knows how much talent Iowa has? Hard to see the talent when the plays could barely be ran. Half of the wrs couldnt be thrown to because the went like more than 3 yards away. The defense was left on the field way too much. We have yet to see the QB play....we dont know what QB will play.

Id like to see some football be played before I start saying how bad the players are.

I only say that because of the recruiting results. I suppose a number of people could surprise and turn into real good players even though we were the only major team who offered (Canzeri?). It would have to happen at a number of positions though. WR,RB,LB, DE.
I share your hope that the offense was a mess for correctable reasons. The only way it could be worse is if it starts turning the ball over as well.
