Urb not happy with other B1G coaches

Urban Meyer wants the Big Ten to step up its recruiting game - CBSSports.com

Leave it to the new guy to just waltz on in and tell the rest of the conference what to do. Not that it takes a rocket scientist to grasp what he is saying, the B1G sucked giant balls at recruiting this year. The lowest ranked recruiting class in the $EC, Kentucky, out recruited seven B1G schools. However, outside of dragging the moral standards of the class down to $EC levels I don't see that there is much of a way the conference overall can improve on their results.

Not sure how we can compete with the SEC with 4 year scholarships, and no oversigning. It's just not possible, and the only way to make it happen is if the NCAA was to make it equal with the 4 year scholarships and limiting the number of medicals you can give to like 2.

I agree. And although I understand that Delaney was trying to take the moral high ground when they introduced the four year schollies conference wide he also basically handcuffed many of the teams. Outside of committing a bunch of recruiting violations by paying guys to come there isn't much more that the coaches from the mid-level schools can do. Ferentz, Kill, and the others outside of Urb and Hoke will never be able to consistently go head to head against the likes of Spurrier, Muschamp, and the like.

Pope Urban is 1-0 against Kap'n Krapfest. But he "cheated", according to butthurt tavernhokks.

Think, just think. Graduation rates. College admission standards. Money under the table (and even on the table more recently). Membership of Universities in high level research collaborations. Over-signing. "Flexible" allowable scholarships. And, taking advice from a guy who has been right in the middle of all of the above.

Dude does have 2 rings, which at last count is 2 more than every other BigTen headcoach put together.

The B1G lost any argument involving morals & ethics with Penn St. Gone. Good-bye.
As far as most of this country is concerned, the B1G is the most corrupt, morally ******** group of institutions on the planet.

This chest puffing exercise of believing that the B1G is better because of academia is the most absurd thing I've ever heard. Not one single person on this board is here because of academics. Not a single one of you, so stop acting like you care or that it matters because you don't and it doesn't. Win games. Its that simple. I do not care what major James Morris has nor what Tanner Miller's GPA is, I do not give a rip. Who cares? Nor do I care if they give recruits bags of cash, I don't care. I don't care if they can read & write, don't care. I only care about wins and loses. So, I applaud Urban Meyer and hope he follows through and calls these wussies out for there inept attempt to recruit football players. If academia means so much, I suggest you go tailgate outside the Chemistry department on gameday instead of at Kinnick. But you won't, because academia doesn't matter, you just won't admit it.

Would like to be a fly on the wall when Urban discusses those recruiting beliefs with the other coaches. While I do agree I would like to see the Big 10 bring in more of the talented players the SEC simply has a stronghold in recruiting right now. Bielema will land better recruits at Arkansas simply because of the conference he is in and the location. Come on Urban, get used to coaching in a league littered with MAC-type talent :)

You don't care if they can read and write? Wow, check how many kids that can't read and write are playing on game days. You personally not caring about the academics side of it is perfectly fine, a lot of college football fans don't. But academics are important to these athletes and being able to stay on the field.

Trey, yes we are all here to talk sports mainly. In addition, we all want a winner put on the field, court, mat etc... However, I and probably many others do not want Iowa or any other B1G school to stoop as low as schools in other conferences just to win. I/We do not want a win at all costs approach. Is that what you want? If so, I suggest you better look for a new team/school/conference to root for. Academics do matter that is why they are called student-athletes not just athletes. And could KF and other B1G coaches recruit better players, yes, but at what expense? It's not like they just don't recruit those players at all, they're just not landing them for a variety of reasons. And don't lump the whole B1G in with PSU, the rest of the B1G had nothing to do with it. None of us are happy with where the program is, but it doesn't mean we should break rules to get better. And why should the B1G stoop to the SEC's level, why not make everything universal and bring the SEC up to the B1G's standards or meet in between.

If academics are the goal & achieving a degree in something is what matters most to a kid, GREAT! OUTSTANDING! I honestly applaud him/her, but it has absolutely zero baring on what I care about. None. I watch Iowa games because I want to see Iowa win. I don't care about how they're doing in school, I just don't. JVB was, by all accounts, a terrific student, I don't care, I'll remember him for a horrific senior season.

Its ridiculous to not be capable of separating athletics & academics. You boil this all down & athletics are entertainment. This very site is perpetuated by us caring about Iowa sports, participated by uncompensated amateurs for gain by these publicly funded institutions. Yet some claim moral and ethical superiority. LOL I don't care about academics for these players. I don't care how Iowa gets them on campus. How many games did they win, that's what interests me.

If the goal is solely academia, that is an admirable goal & I would encourage any university to follow that path. If the goal is academia & athletics, be capable of separating the two and realizing and accepting that they have different missions and purposes.

I still don't think that the recruiting disparity between the SEC and the Big 10 (for example) is so purely rooted in their 'dirty tactics' or lack of ethics. Although, I am sure that those things play a role.

I think it's more a function of the fact that the SEC is located in a region where all the best recruits come from.

The Big 10's geographic area is pretty much a hotbed for basketball recruiting IMO. Chicago, the twin cities, Detroit area, the state of Indiana, parts of Ohio, etc... can all produce really good hoops prospects. And it shows, the Big 10 is loaded with good teams and players.

But in football, the south (specifically the southeast) has most of the talent. I looked at ESPN's top 150 for the class that just signed yesterday, and of those 150 prospects, 78 of them come from SEC states. That includes Texas. Including Texas might be controversial, but I think the SEC has as many recruiting advantages in that conference right now as anybody. Maybe U of Texas and Oklahoma can still win recruiting battles there, but still.

How many of those top 150 prospects are from Big 10 land? 23 by my count (from states that contain a Big 10 school). This is the problem. Within that 23, Ohio really carries the region with 7. And all seven signed with either OSU or Mich.

Switch to watching pro sports then where they don't have to worry about academics.
