Well if teams focused on May like they do Gatens you would understand Gatens is better.

The best lineup we could put out there would be Marble, Cartwright, Ogelsby, Basabe and McCabe. This would give us three guys with some handles; 2 that can drive and dish/ finish and we can sub White and Brommer for Basabe and McCabe. Gatens and May rotate in as we rest guys. Gatens couldn't do anything against Brown.....that should tell you something.

This year is over and its barely even begun. Gatens is a Sr, Cartwright is a Sr, Brommer is a Sr and Archie is a Sr. I wouldn't play any of those guys outside of relief minutes for the younger players.

Its time to flip a switch and get some experience for the guys who are going to be here next year AND help ward off any transfer rumors due to lack of playing time.

Have you seen any games? Do you watch Matt? He is made of steel. His defense, his leadership, his floor sense are incredible. As to points, he is targeted on a team that frankly, does not have a lot of offensive fire power...what do you expect to happen?

You are hopeless.

You should not include his Defense or leadership. Where has this been? When something goes against him, he start pouting, and he can't keep his guy in front of him on any dribble drives. May, same way.

Gatens gives max effort and IMO, you can't fault him for being an average player on awful teams all 4 years. Unfortunately he peaked as a freshman and everyone has figured out to get in his face at the 3 point line and you take him out of the game. His offense consists of spotting up or shooting after coming off a screen, but we are too dysfunctional to create these situations for him. When he does get looks or is needed in crunch time, he has underperformed consistently against teams not named NC A&T or Chicago State.

Anybody who wants a starting lineup without Gatens is clueless period.

Agreed, he has some limitations, but he doesn't have enough to warrant him to a bench player. He plays hard and is better in his overall game than he is given credit for. His only fault is playing for Iowa at its worst point in history, he has been the one quality player and he is a lightning rod.
His growth as a player has been stunted by Iowa itself.

My starting five is bench May and insert Marble. Keep Cartwright, Gatens, Basabe and McCabe.

Cartwright if Healthy
Marble
Gatens
Basabe
Brommer

5 off the bench
McCabe
White
Oglesby
Archie
May/Olaseni
sorry May does not get it this year, and Olaseni needs minutes

Its not that I don't want to see Gatens or Cartwright on the floor, I do. Its that this team has no chance of any post-season play. Knowing that we don't have any chance of post-season play with or without Gatens and Cartwright then my preference is to get the younger guys as much experience as possible.

With Gatens and Cartwright on the floor then Marble and Oglesby are not gaining valuable playing time. Am I saying run the latter into the ground and let them learn only by playing? Of course not, but they need to be in the lineup more often than not if we hope to build anything for the future.

Marble isn't going to be the starting PG in years to come and having him backup Cartwright made sense last year but not this year (at this point in the season). Gatens and May are occupying space that could otherwise allow valuable experience to Marble, Oglesby and White. If anyone thinks that May is going to be a quality contributor in the future then you aren't watching the games.

Its a tough situation to be in. Fran wants to win this year, the team wants to win this year, the fans want to win this year but its just not going to happen with the current talent level.

as long as May doesn't play I don't care who the starting 5 is this year. Fran has given May plenty of chances to prove he can play and it's obvious he can not contribute at the D1 level.

This. At least to the starters. Our major offensive is problem is a lack of shot creators. We need ballhandlers to be able to get shots. Marble and Cartright should be on the floor together often, as they are only two real shot creators. No good BCS team plays with only one dribble-drive threat.

i am watching the games, Gatens is a starter without question
Marble should start and too date has shot 9 3's on the season
shooting three in a gym without pressure does not mean sccess in a game
he needs to get this done in a game
backing up Cartwright does help in away as he get quality game experience in ball handling but not outside shooting
the 3 he shot was well beyond NBA range
to me Olaseni need to play more when he gets healthy
i just have not seen the big improvement in Archie or Brommer as the season goes along they may show more
Archie has improved over last year and gives everything he has, but it sadley is not enough

two ways to look at it, since the season will not be a successful one
you can let the seniors have the last go round
or throw them under the bus and let the underclassmen struggle without the seniors leadership they need
