Update on Patrick McCaffery

I doubt Patrick would say this, but as much as I wish the Hawks were still in the tourney, I'm glad that Fran doesn't have to try to juggle and balance while the family works through this.

Thoughts and prayers Patrick and family.

Get well soon, Patrick...you will no doubt kick the crap out of this. My thoughts and prayers for you and your family. Go get'em.

Nobody, I mean nobody wants to hear the CA word in their family, especially with a kid, no matter what type. But, thyroid CA can be beaten which is positive. The cure rate will be in the high percentages, which is good. The usual types are papillary or papillary of a follicular variant. Then there are others that are very very rare such as a medullary CA.

I can't emphasize what a unique case it is having an adolescent male being Dx'ed with a thyroid CA. It is actually kind of rare. Young adults (20-40), mostly female are often Dx'ed, but not many being adolescent. Also, Patrick is not overweight which can be contributed to thyroid CA many times. I have a good feeling he will do well. Wish him your best.

Really awful news but we all hope it is a type of cancer that can be treated and cured.

My wife is a nurse and she works a lot with cancer and she said that this type of cancer is very treatable. Remove the tumor and two or three weeks of chemo/radiation and your good, unless it has spread to other locations. If caught early it has a high rate of survivability. My prayers are with the family and all families going through similar circumstances.

No one likes to hear the "c" word and you especially don't want it to occur to a young person. We wish Patrick the best and a full recovery. But no one should view Fran's son as suffering a debilitating disease. As has been noted, especially these two posts, this is probably the least serious form of cancer one can experience. Cure rate is literally 99.99 percent. Patrick should live a full and long life, with no lasting impact from this other than taking a daily dose -- a small pill -- of synthroid. Millions of us do.
