Unwarranted pessimism

I suppose you call those BTT championships conference championships just like Alf does? Keep in mind, Alf had a loosing conference record during his time at Iowa. Being an Illini fan, you may not be aware of that fact.

Alford only won 20 games 3 times. And never won a B1G championship.

I'll challenge you to an Iowa Hawkeye trivia contest anytime. Nice insults when you can't win an argument. The comment was that he wasn't within smelling of success. That assumption is wrong. I never wanted an IU alum as a coach. Fact is he is the only one to get us to the finals and that 3x.

And many on here were jumping up and down about getting a couple of wins to propel the Hawks into dancing.....

Okay back to The Stepford Fans of Iowa........

Only an Alf apologist or an illini troll would put up Alfs BTT achievements as evidence of anything tremendous.

Making it out of the first round of the NCAA tourney once and only making it 3 times total in 8 seasons = TREMENDOUS!

Sorry you find my pointing out that you are indeed an illini troll insulting.

I said that Alf never sniffed Tremendous. That goes a little beyond success in my opinion. Alf did have limited success while at Iowa. He was never tremendous.

If you had a clue Go you'd understand the IL culture and that Chicago and the rest of the state are not one and the same. Madison and almost IC are about as close as Champaign. Over the years, Iowa has done better at times in Chicago than did IL. If you had a clue you'd know there are at least 4 D1 programs in Chicago alone.

Maybe you'd like this to be the Stepford Fans Forum?

If I had a clue? lol... you're not very good at math, huh? Champaign to Chicago = 137 miles. Iowa City to Chicago = 244 miles. Yeah... that's about the same. Only about 100 miles difference.

And how many of those other D1 programs in Chicago are even relevant? Are you gonna say that DePaul is relevant now? Or NW? ***** please.

Then they were stricken to 40 more years in the desert and the elders would never be allowed to see the promise land!

Actually, Moses gathered the Levites, and commanded them to draw swords and kill those who still refused to believe, killing 3,000 of their own people. Obviously my metaphor breaks down at this point, as those who refuse to be patient with the plan will suffer no indignities greater than an "I told you so". Of course, impatience on its own can be self-destructive, as we see many people here lashing out at others for the most venial of offenses.

A few things:

* We are headed in the right direction. We are playing competitive ball in the best conference in the nation
* I think the number of close losses has made it harder on fans because we have come so close so often
* We are building. Remember, this program was in sad, sad shape before Fran arrived. The worst shape in my lifetime (30 + years as a fan). Fran has had to work his tail off to make Iowa basketball relevant again. But we are headed in the right direction and should continue to improve each year on the recruiting front.
* This is only year No. 3. The core unit is there. Our freshmen have done a pretty good job in the nation's top conference.
* We should not have lost the Nebraska game. That being said, it is flat out hard to win on the road. Look at the number of upsets taking place when teams play on the road.

I like where the program is at. Next year, I expect to start winning the close games. The conference will continue to improve so it won't be easy. But our players will be older. We will have Utoff, Jok, and Mayer. Gessell, Clemons, and Woodbury will be a year wiser ... I feel much better about the direction of basketball than football ... We will be just fine ...

I agree with your entire post, well said - except that I think the jury is still out on the very last line. But before you crucify me - I will say that ON PAPER, we should be fine, based on where the program is right now, what we have coming back, and the players we have coming in. I really want to believe that. So I do feel good about the direction of the program, but just can't bring myself to count any chickens before they're hatched.

Fran has taken this program from being just plain BAD to being competetive, but what I really wonder is if taking that next step to becoming a Big Ten contender and NCAA Tournament lock will be as easy? As you said, the Big Ten will be tough again next year, and other programs will improve, too. Iowa also needs to keep improving, and find a way to turn all those close losses into W's. We're close - just gotta take that next step.

Next year will be interesting, one way or another. If this team improves the way I think it can, it should be a lot of fun. If not, then it doesn't take a clairvoyant to predict that it will get ugly on these boards.

I think the first thing we need to do in taking that next step forward is schedule a big boy nonconference schedule. We did ourselves no favors at the all you can eat cupcake buffet this season.

Agreed. Even as is, if Iowa's non-conference were even decent, our RPI would be what, 20-30 spots higher? It doesn't take murderer's row, just lay off the cupcakes.

That would make a big difference to a lot of recruits. Nice math.... Btw, how far is Madison, S Bend and Marquette? Purdue?

Stop making excuses for poor little ole Iowa. Losing attitudes.

I've got to ask the question though? How far is NC, Creighton, Kansas, and Wisconsin from Iowa? Don't they own Iowa recruits? Who is next? UNI?

I'll second that. Lived in outside Springfield for a couple of years. Downstaters don't like Chicagoans and they look down their noses on downstaters. Springfield is as unfriendly a place as I've ever been. The villagers don't much care for it. Illinois' culture is like two states.

Illinois does have a difficult time recruiting Chicago; they do much, much better in the dozen or so decent size cities downstate.

I think every fanbase in the nation has these same gripes. You think Wisconsin is complaining, "We never should've lost to Iowa" ISU the same thing.

Every time there is a close loss, somebody screwed up and blame must be assessed. When there's a close win it was a terrific effort and everyone is doing a great job. That's the nature of the beast.

I for one, think FM is a terrific coach and I support him 100%. Do I scratch my head sometimes over substitution patterns and playing time? Yes. But I will defend him to the end.

No, I do not think that they think that and if they do they are out of touch with reality.

Iowa is equally if not more talented than Wisconsin and is more talented than Isu.

Iowa on the other hand is significantly better than Wisconsin and should have won that game comfortably.

We have a tremendous coach right now. We've improved steadily every year, including this year.
If you don't appreciate what we have right now, it's because you stopped watching 4 or 5 years ago.
The fact that I've HURT so much when we have lost, points to how good of a job he has done.
You are a real pessimist if you don't think we will continue to grow and improve next year. You are a real pessimist if you don't see a great foundation set.

Iowa has a good shot to get to 20 wins and .500 in conference. Sure, that probably won't get us to the tournament but considering we lose one player, who is a bench player, next year, and get two players who have some talent, there really isn't any reason to be pessimistic.

That said, holy **** did all the close losses blow.
