I suppose you call those BTT championships conference championships just like Alf does? Keep in mind, Alf had a loosing conference record during his time at Iowa. Being an Illini fan, you may not be aware of that fact.
Only an Alf apologist or an illini troll would put up Alfs BTT achievements as evidence of anything tremendous.
I'll challenge you to an Iowa Hawkeye trivia contest anytime.
If you had a clue Go you'd understand the IL culture and that Chicago and the rest of the state are not one and the same. Madison and almost IC are about as close as Champaign. Over the years, Iowa has done better at times in Chicago than did IL. If you had a clue you'd know there are at least 4 D1 programs in Chicago alone.
Maybe you'd like this to be the Stepford Fans Forum?
Then they were stricken to 40 more years in the desert and the elders would never be allowed to see the promise land!
A few things:
* We are headed in the right direction. We are playing competitive ball in the best conference in the nation
* I think the number of close losses has made it harder on fans because we have come so close so often
* We are building. Remember, this program was in sad, sad shape before Fran arrived. The worst shape in my lifetime (30 + years as a fan). Fran has had to work his tail off to make Iowa basketball relevant again. But we are headed in the right direction and should continue to improve each year on the recruiting front.
* This is only year No. 3. The core unit is there. Our freshmen have done a pretty good job in the nation's top conference.
* We should not have lost the Nebraska game. That being said, it is flat out hard to win on the road. Look at the number of upsets taking place when teams play on the road.
I like where the program is at. Next year, I expect to start winning the close games. The conference will continue to improve so it won't be easy. But our players will be older. We will have Utoff, Jok, and Mayer. Gessell, Clemons, and Woodbury will be a year wiser ... I feel much better about the direction of basketball than football ... We will be just fine ...
I think the first thing we need to do in taking that next step forward is schedule a big boy nonconference schedule. We did ourselves no favors at the all you can eat cupcake buffet this season.
If I had a clue? lol... you're not very good at math, huh? Champaign to Chicago = 137 miles. Iowa City to Chicago = 244 miles. Yeah... that's about the same. Only about 100 miles difference.
And how many of those other D1 programs in Chicago are even relevant? Are you gonna say that DePaul is relevant now? Or NW? ***** please.

Alford only won 20 games 3 times. And never won a B1G championship.
I'll second that. Lived in outside Springfield for a couple of years. Downstaters don't like Chicagoans and they look down their noses on downstaters. Springfield is as unfriendly a place as I've ever been. The villagers don't much care for it. Illinois' culture is like two states. If you had a clue Go you'd understand the IL culture and that Chicago and the rest of the state are not one and the same. I think every fanbase in the nation has these same gripes. You think Wisconsin is complaining, "We never should've lost to Iowa" ISU the same thing.
Every time there is a close loss, somebody screwed up and blame must be assessed. When there's a close win it was a terrific effort and everyone is doing a great job. That's the nature of the beast.
I for one, think FM is a terrific coach and I support him 100%. Do I scratch my head sometimes over substitution patterns and playing time? Yes. But I will defend him to the end.
