University of Iowa Cuts Ties With Chris Doyle.

a lot of people got banned from Hawk websites after rhabdo ... he and kf were defended ad nauseum ... he shoulda been fired 10 years ago instead of given a made-up award

Rob was upset with some of us bringing it up. Many on here loved Doyle's style. Will be interesting how that will be looked at.

I'm so on the fence about this. On one hand, as I've expressed in numerous other threads, Coach Doyle crossed a line whether considered racist or just totally inappropriate, in terms of ethical behavior and I'm not opposed to his departure. With that said, it sounded from the press conference that Doyle was on a year to year contract that ends on 7/1/20, if I'm not mistaken, so a very generous parting gift given to him by the University. Which makes me what skeletons are out there that they don't want brought to the surface.
He definitely got paid to keep quiet about Kirk and Brian.

Yup. More so then anything him keeping his mouth shut and not coming after the school for anything else was what the $ was for. Making it a win/win... I guess.. But that's just bubble gum patching a cement dam as far as the school should be concerened. With lawyers getting wrapped up with the parents of some of these kids the mud slinging hasn't even gotten fully started yet.

Agreed, but at the same time although its hush money, I ask myself it was something that would have been that damaging to KF and BF would he take the buyout? Or would he go public with it?

Listen...$1.1 million is a lot of money. I thought he might get more based on how long he's been there. When you consider the amounts some head coaches get (think Mike Riley) for complete and utter failure...this is a drop in the bucket.

However, one thing to remember: it is less than 2 years salary that he was earning with Iowa.

But it sounds as though his one year contract was up in a little over 2 weeks. They very easily could have not renewed his contract if I'm understanding this correctly. So why the severance package vs. simply not renewing his contract? My opinion is he can talk if they terminate or simply don't renew his contract.

This is a whopping can of worms that could get real ugly if the major players aren't careful. It may get real ugly even if the major players are careful. The guys in the athletic department and University think that the way forward can be best handled on an institutional level. State Senator Celsi and others who are like minded are speaking from a sense of moral outrage and may be angling for a legal excision. Seeing the problem as emblematic of a greater social problem is one thing. Aiming for a clear cut excision of the problem usually means everyone close to the issue gets to walk the plank and gets the push at the end. It may look nothing like reform but rather a gutting and replacement. It also might mean that people that are quite willing to work with each other will be asked to take a sides instead.

Nice try Claire. A lot of folks around Iowa City make a ton of $$ on Hawkeye sports. Yeah they have to spend $ to make more. The American way. I know a downtown IC hotel that gets $500 a night with a two night minimum during FB season. The IC police have been bitching for years about the dollars they spend on athletic events. But they sure continue to like the OT pay.

I am laughing my ass off at the bitching about Doyle’s settlement. Why don’ t you take a look at the private sector CEO’s who drive their businesses into the ground, fire thousands of middle class employees, and then get golden parachutes that make Doyle’s look like chump change. So many of you guys just love to bust the public sector’s ass while you continue to ignore the disasters in the private sector. Hypocrisy is rampant!

Sagging your pants and turning your hat sideways is not racist. Many white kids, and Hispanic kids, wear crooked hats and pants to the knees.

Asking someone about robbing a bank is not racist. Many bank robberies are done by non black people.

The ghetto comment? Yes, thats racist.

Chris Doyle had a BIG hand in shaping the program the last 21 years.

Let's not forget that. Many of the NFL guys who complained are the same ones who praised him before.

I thought Iowa's woes would have triggered an avalanche of similar news of malfeasence across college football.

Guess we're the only institution with this issue.

No shit. Can you imagine what it would have cost to fire him and potentially go to litigation. Attorney fees alone would have topped 1.5 mil. What 1 million $$ is worth today is what 2.5 million was worth in 1985. It takes 2.5 mill 1985 dollars to equal todays million.

I've said in another thread that I read that in an ESPN article, the kid with the "send you back to the ghetto" comment was actually just insinuating that Doyle meant ghetto when he actually just said the name of the town he was from. The kid exaggerated the story to make it sound racist. I'd be curious to read the actual article because all I read was someone posting a portion of the article.

Does this spell the end for Doyle as an active coach? He is 51 and has the opportunity to watch Dillon play ball over the next few years and will have enough money to live comfortably. Does he walk away completely or take a break?

With all that has been said about him I would find it hard to believe that he would even be able to find a job after this. Do schools want to take a chance if in fact the allegations were true despite his resume?

Has enough money??? My gawd after 21 years at the Iowa salary trough if he saved even a modest amount of the money he made he is way off better than 95% or more of US citizens who work for 50 years. He has been making a ton of money a year for some years now for yelling at people to push and lift pounds of stuff.

C'mon let's not feel sorry for Chris Doyle. I don't know him except as a good S&C coach, it sounds like he was very insensitive or worse to black athletes if the accusations are true, so he either needed to apologize and say he would change or he needed to leave.

They came to an agreement. I'm sure the university wanted to give him some kind of severance package out of respect and, to be honest, keep him from disclosing anything else to sweep this under and to move on. Just say the university does let his contract run out without giving him anything. He could go to the press, open a can of worms, or worse start litigation where much more would come out. University didn't want to risk that and 1.1 mil is a whole lot better than having certain things come out and probably a lot better economically. The university could have spent much more than that in a court battle. So, pay him 1.1 mil hush money and move on.
