UI’s recruiting class is ranked 40th nationally by Scout.com

This isn't a surprise. I've never felt the need to put a lot of stock in recruiting class rankings.

Does it bother you at all the Franny Mac can put a top 25 class together in his 2nd year after walking into the 3 worst years in Iowa history, while KF is in his 14th and can't field one despite pretty recent success?

Top rated BB recruits come from everywhere. If you get a few of them, you get a highly rated class. Most highly rated FB players are not around here, and even if you pick up a few of them, you need a lot more to get a highly ranked class.

It's totally different.

Recruiting for a team of 100 players versus a team of 15 players is not an apples to apples comparison.

Additionally, player development (save for the QB position) is a strength of the football team.

Alford also had some classes ranked very highly according to hoopscoop. Unfortunately, it seems that their system basically concludes that 2 Cully Paynes are better than one Anthony Davis.

Yeah, I'm more of a "quality over quantity" type of guy. You have 6 of ME in a recruiting class (basketball), does that make it a Top-25 class? Hardly.

Five 2* players doesn't equal two 5* players.

Good info.

I'd like to see how strong of a correlation there is (if any) between recruiting class rankings and BCS standings. (e.g. Who had the top recruiting class in 2007 and how did that team rank in the final BCS standings at the end of last season?)

That 2009 class really is the killer of the group, as it is showing on the field this year. They would be the Seniors and RS Juniors on this years team.

Besides already being ranked 75th we've had significant attrition of that 2009 class for one reason or another. It does give some "explanation" as to why this year has been such struggle.

The Captain ought to plunk down some of his salary to hire some help with recruiting. It's all well and good to get under the radar nobodies and turn them into NFL players. It would be even better if he could convince great players to come to Iowa to win football games.

"The biggest thing that jumps out ot me, from a guy looking in from the outside, is that it appears to to have been a dropoff in talent".

......Gerry DiNardo, former coach and current Big 10 Network analyst commenting on this year's Iowa squad.

The vultures are already circling the program as this year progresses.....looking for those with the talent and those that might be waivering. Delano Hill next......maybe. As I look at those that Iowa is still in the running for or are considering extending an offer to it is primarily a battle between us and MAC level competitors for the most part. Iowa ranks fourth from the bottom in the BIG in extended offers to ESPN's Elite 300 prospects this year.....joining IN, MN, and NW. We offered even fewer the year before in this same listing. I see one Hawk verbal thus far this year from outside the Midwest.

We may not hit for a high average with top tier talent but we need to get to the plate a bit more and think a bit bigger vs. focus on the Midwest and battling for those that remain after OSU, MI, ND, and others have their pickings.

"We're just Iowa" is not a ringing endorsement for thinking big.

That class had:
**** - Wegher and Davis
*** - Cotton and MacMillan
So take Wegher out of the equation and that class ranking would go down even further. Have to note Hyde was in that class as a 2 star along with Van Sloten and Rogers.

So that makes just 6 guys playing some meaningful downs this year.

Steven Alford put together a top 10 class his first crack at it, so let's not get ahead of ourselves.

Ha, ranked 40th for now until we start losing all of our best recruits because they realize they don't want to play for a coach that is content and calls an incredibly boring game that doesn't allow us to compete. You can go to Northwestern, Iowa State, etc. and actually win games, or you can come to Iowa and play on a team that will be lucky to win 5 games. Tough choice.

WAHHHHH WAAAHHHHH!

A well thought out response. I thank you for that, ghost. Unfortunately, my post was factual so while it may seem like complaining to you, it is the truth.

Yeah, it was so factual. Because that's how recruiting works. Teams that are always bad never get better and always lose recruits. You are so factually correct.
