"The biggest thing that jumps out ot me, from a guy looking in from the outside, is that it appears to to have been a dropoff in talent".
......Gerry DiNardo, former coach and current Big 10 Network analyst commenting on this year's Iowa squad.
The vultures are already circling the program as this year progresses.....looking for those with the talent and those that might be waivering. Delano Hill next......maybe. As I look at those that Iowa is still in the running for or are considering extending an offer to it is primarily a battle between us and MAC level competitors for the most part. Iowa ranks fourth from the bottom in the BIG in extended offers to ESPN's Elite 300 prospects this year.....joining IN, MN, and NW. We offered even fewer the year before in this same listing. I see one Hawk verbal thus far this year from outside the Midwest.
We may not hit for a high average with top tier talent but we need to get to the plate a bit more and think a bit bigger vs. focus on the Midwest and battling for those that remain after OSU, MI, ND, and others have their pickings.
"We're just Iowa" is not a ringing endorsement for thinking big.
One can understand why the staff may either be "gun-shy" or "pragmatic". Such as:
--The 2005 Class
-Sure, it was ranked 8th. Christensen never panned out. Stross was injured at times. Dace was walking wounded, Doering never got it going. Moeaki? Walking wounded. Bain? Left the program.
--Perennial Runner-Up Status
-In addition to several Heisman runners-up in our history, we also seem to be that team that, when it's down to two schools, ours is the hat that doesn't get picked up. Lately, some of the best moves we have made have been the offers we either pulled or cooled on (Seantrel Henderson being a prime example). But too often--and not just during KF Era--we have lost top in-state recruits to Michigan, Nebrasaka or elsewhere (Adrian Arrington, Roger Craig, et. al.). It gets discouraging to have a kid from Cedar Rapids or the QC say he chose "X" because of, basically, "the spotlight".
--De-Commits
-How many guys have "committed" only to switch late i the game? At one point we had Jason Ford and Suppo Sanni and possibly Russell Ellington in the pipeline. Two years ago it was Melvin Gordon. Another year it was Brian Smith. Along came Zook and ND, and we were toast. And it wasn't in August or September, it was October, November, December, etc. At that point, you have already told other recruits that you are going in a certain direction.
Given the above, it's pretty difficult to spend an inordinate of time on a few top-shelf recruits. Iowa may be known as an OL or DL "pipeline", but what top-rated WR or RB will choose Iowa over Michigan, Ohio State, Nebraska or (historically) Penn State? And that's just within B1G. Once ND, USC or SEC schools come calling?
