Uhhh.....Clowns?

I think you will spend a couple weeks here and return to the echo chamber.

It's not my first time here. I probably will only spend a couple of weeks here because then the ISU/Iowa game will have come and gone and I won't really have anything to discuss with you all anymore. :D

There's idiots and homers everywhere on the internet. Engaging with my own fanbase is boring.

Cool and I get that. It is the weak ass troll jobs that can get a little annoying.

My poor? Lol. Hardly. I hate to break it to you but not everyone had a kirk pin up poster in their buena vista dorm room like you. Admit it. You were one of those small town Iowa boys that baled hay in the summertime but dad let you away just long enough to attend Iowa football camp with a couple 5.2 in the 40 skill position buddies. You came back so wide eyed that you dreamed you’d be a hogeye someday! You started getting chain letters in the mail (because you were on their mailing list) and you thought for sure that day was coming. When you were named all corn cob conference honorable mention at lb (5-9 235 lbs) you were really confident the call was coming. But you told everyone at BV during your first drunken weekend that iowa was all over you your sr year. If hodge and greenway didn’t commit, you were next. And another lifelong fan is born

Are you embarrassed to admit you are a Cyclone fan?

Welp, there goes any chance of getting Gameday in Ames. Little brother ruins everything again.

AJE is going to tear them apart. Their line couldn't block UNI.

I wouldn’t want gameday in Ames. I couldn’t take cyclones fans peacocking on national TV, with Corso and herbie talking about Matt Campbell as the next dabo swinney

We strictly don't deserve it right now.

If we actually have success this year, maybe when we host Texas in November.

All that is true but I was really unimpressed with the O Line. I as also really confused by the offensive game plan. I don't think they got Purdy out of the pocket at all, which is just a bizarre choice. Regardless, they won, and we've seen ISU lose many games like this.

There is no shame in UNI playing you tough. I wouldn’t have wanted iowa on the field against them Saturday. I am very surprised that ISU wasn’t more dominant up front. We’ve heard all off season how ISU had all their O-line back and this was the best d-line they’ve ever had. That was definitely not reflected. They should have completely worn down an FCS team by the 3rd quarter.

That 09 Iowa d-line had 3 pros on it. 4 if Daniels played. Just sayin.

Wasn't it? UNI rushed for 1.1 yards per attempt. That's most likely the D-line getting early contact. The linebackers had 7 tackles for loss which doesn't happen unless the D-line is eating up blockers.

Every ISU running back went for 4.3 yards/carry or better. When every running back who touches the ball runs for 4+ yards, you're probably getting good performance from your O-line.

Pass protection was the disappointment, and UNI was credited with 2 sacks and 2 QB hurries, so it wasn't exactly dismal.

First an foremost as a Hawk fan we need to be concerned with Rutgers first. I have watched too many years where teams we should beat on paper give us a hell of a time if not beat us. ISU didn't play horrible and UNI was very opportunistic and well prepared.

My take was ISU really sputtered at times and I would be very concerned with how little Purdy spread the ball around. I would anticipate that being more even against Iowa and have more confidence in their play calling. UNI played gritty and the scrambling QB can be a fit to play against.

I just want Iowa to take care of business on Saturday, stay healthy, and then we can see how it all shakes out against ISU

Trying to be as objective as possible, as an ISU fan.

The good-

We had a couple of promising drives slayed by penalties at the worst time. We had two plays into the red zone called back, and turned potential touchdowns into field goals. We statistically dominated and if we clean up shooting ourselves in the foot, the game would not have been in doubt.

While the penalties were untimely, we were good on the sort of penalties I would blame on coaching/preparation/discipline. No false starts. No motion penalties. Ok, one stupid 12 men in the huddle.

While we didn't have a single dominant running back, we had good production from all of them, which points to the O line doing it's job.

The defense was stellar. the UNI run game was essentially a non factor. Uni, especially late in the game, was bailed out by McElvain's elusiveness and creativity. UNI had one offensive touchdown, in OT so they didn't have to drive the field, had to convert a 4th down, and needed crazy plays from McElvain.

The bad-

Offense didn't produce. Penalties or not, we needed more from them.

We missed Butler and Montgomery very very badly. We had a serious lack of explosive plays. We didn't take deep shots. Maybe by design with it being the first game. Maybe due to WR's not making the plays to get open.

Pass blocking was... questionable, I suppose? Not awful, but not great. We sometimes had issues picking up the blitz.

Purdy felt a little hesitant to either throw or run at times. Maybe due to missing Butler and WRs not getting themselves open. He seemed more effective outside the pocket last year, but sometimes scrambled too early. I understand they're trying to coach him to stay in the pocket longer.

Kicking hicuup, again. Make all the field goals and the game doesn't go to OT.

The I Don't Know, Overall

We obviously looked far from convincing, and undeserving of the top 25 ranking. As with basically every first game of the season, it's hard to say if we're worse than advertised or if UNI played out of their minds/is teriffic or some combination thereof.

I will say that UNI is a consistently good team and tough game, both for us and for you. I hope we were finding our groove, figuring out life without Butler & Montgomery, playing conservatively, etc.

As a rule, I try to avoid emotions like optimism and hope when it comes to ISU. It makes the inevitable kick in the balls easier to stomach. I'm glad we have a bye for plenty of time to prepare and tinker. I'm not looking forward to playing you guys. I can't imagine I will ever in my life feel confident about it.

I'm trying to engage with you all in good faith. I don't enjoy just posting in a Clone friendly echo chamber, I like the discourse in debating with people who don't agree with me. Feel free to unleash your insults and calls for me to go back to my own messages boards, etc
I'd say Purdy demonstrated good decision-making, if not a little timid. Maybe he was handcuffed by Campbell, but from what I've seen that's a regular occurrence for him. Manning's influence was clearly not there Game 1.

Your defense looked stout again and should again be one of, if not the best in the Big 12, and good by national standards as well. However, and you mentioned it, the OL does not looked fixed, and that was definitely a major issue for you guys last season. Iowa and Texas both neutralized your offense by getting pressure early and often, and owning the LOS, and while UNI wasn't totally dominant, they were worryingly effective for what's supposed to be Year 4 of the Campbell/Manning OL project.

I, like many fans, enjoy jabbing at rivals and occasionally laughing at their expense, but I also enjoy rival fans like yourself who come to, respectfully, give opposing perspectives as well.

Not a bad post. Here is what I would be worried about if I were a ISU fan:

1) Purdy is very pedestrian without Montgomery and Butler. Purdy lacks the arm strength to really push the ball down field, and really needed Butlers ability to go up and get contested throws last year. I don't think Campbell is gonna want Purdy throwing up those balls this year without Butler

2) OL is very concerning to me. ISU should have been able to both protect Purdy better and rush the ball better vs UNI's DL.

Positives in the UNI game for ISU:

1) Defense looks legit. It was very smart for Campbell to model ISU after Iowa. If you have a stout D, you will always be in games, and rarely get blown out.

2) It was the first game and ISU won. Bottom line this is the only thing that matters and ISU's coaches should be able to really coach the team up with that subpar performance.

I think it's natural for any college QB to have a drop-off when losing a receiver and running back to the NFL. Purdy may have also benefitted from being inserted into the offense in early-mid season last year. There was no real film and no one had prepared for him. Teams now know he's the starter and have most of a year of film on him.

The OL is concerning, but I see the pass protection as more of a concern than run blocking. As I said earlier, we had 3 backs with 10+ carries who all averaged 4.3 yards/rush. Kene Nwangwu only had 4 carries, but 3 were for 7+ yards and one was a short yardage situation. There were only 3 running back rushes for a loss and all were inside the UNI 10 where they're going to stack against a run anyway.

I don't have concerns about the running game, but teams with good downfield coverage and/or a strong pass rush will make me nervous.

Meh, numbers look okay, but a top 25 team should dominate an FCS team, even an okay FCS team. If ISU wants to compete against Oklahoma or Texas it needs to be able to stomp UNI, the way iowa did last year.

However I go back to what I said earlier. UNI played great and I wouldn’t have wanted iowa to be playing them Saturday.

You should be very concerned about the running game and the OL play. The 3 main RB barely averaged over 4 YPC against UNI's 3 man fronts. Then you have pass pro, which was awful. I mean Purdy only threw short passes (only attempted 2 passes over 15 yards) and the tackles were getting owned by the least talented DE's they are going to face all year long.
