UCLA loves Alford

Pretty clear Alfords past was never vetted during the selection process. To see the AD scramble and then make false statements about conversations with Alford is crazy.

His job is probably in serious jeopardy.

That was the gist of the article to me too. I think that's what they wanted the readers to take away from it more then anything but they used the buyout with NM being finalized as being the vehicle to write the article and bring all that up. Pretty clever writer there if I'm right. You wouldn't think there even was an interview for the job after seeing what the two of them said. Can you imagine being a UcLa fan or if something like that was going on here?? If Alford didn't enjoy the media in Iowa boy is he in for a culture shock

Too bad Alford was still learning the fundamentals of coaching when he came to Iowa.

UCLA should also say: "Thanks Hawkeyes!"

I agree completly Homer. The guy just wasnt ready for a Big Ten program. He is turning out to be a pretty decent coach, if he can ever put the PP thing behind him. His personality also didnt help him at Iowa. I think he expected to be treated like Bob Knight was treated at Ind. If he had won 3 national titles we might have.

From New Castle to Bloomington to Manchester to Springfield to Albuquerque, Steve Alford has always thrived on being a big fish in a small pond.

He's about to be a sprat in the Pacific Ocean. Good luck with that, Golden Boy.

Alf doesn't have Craig Neal around to run timeouts and other coaching stuff anymore. Stevie's tenure is going to be short.

The guy had it made at NM. They loved him there and thought he was great. Now he is going to have to deliver. Especially in the post season. And as we all know, that hasn't been a particular strength.

He is turning out to be a pretty decent coach, if he can ever put the PP thing behind him and get past the first weekend sometime this century. His personality also didnt help him at Iowa. I think he expected to be treated like Bob Knight was treated at Ind (Unless he wins something, that attitude won't fly at UCLA, either). If he had won 3 national titles we might have.

FIFY.

A couple things about the article are still buzzing around Bruin-land. The first is the one new revelation, that Guerrero lied about talking to Alford about Pierce. At a school that fired its last national-championship coach for lying about a $900 dinner bill, that's a big deal.

The other is the buyout. The truth is UNM got it raised from $200k to $300k. The other $425k represents bonuses Alford had *already* agreed to forego when he left for UCLA. That's where the odd language "net benefit of $625,000 buyout" comes from. Some gamesmanship by UNM, who wanted $1 million. Furthermore, nothing's actually been signed, prompting UCLA to fire back with their own statement:
