I am serious when i say this.

I believe the voting age, driving age, and drinking age should all be 14 years old....

But anybody who wants to drink would be required to get a drinking license.

Heck no on the voting age of 14. I don't want any more people who don't know anything about anything voting.

It was 18 for me and a bazillion others growing up.

We all survived just fine.

Not everyone in my class survived. Teen drunk driving deaths have decreased a lot. In 2015 only 1,251 died under 21. That's only 20 per state per year. Only 1 in every 5 counties of Iowa each year. Ya, everyone survives.

People in my age group saw the drinking age changed three times during their high school and college years. When I was in high school the drinking age was 21. In 1972 it was changed to 18 - I started college in 1974 at 17 so had to wait a while to be able to legally drink, but a lot of kids drank in high school. In my senior year the law was changed to 19 because of increased accidents/fatalities among young people., It was changed again to 21 to make sure Iowa gets it's federal road money.

I've seen way more 40-70 year olds destroy their lives with alcohol than 18-30 year olds.

I think it takes real world experiences. Job, money, relationships, etc. Those would lead to more alcoholism than "hey guys we're 19 and have zero responsibilities, lets get drunk!"

Gambling at 21 is an even bigger joke. They should make it legal to gamble until you reach a certain age if anything. When I was under 21 I had no responsibilities at all. I just as well have blown it at a casino. At least I wouldn't have been able to afford alcohol.

I thought that was the norm. Everyone goes out drinking with a fake ID. Once you’re 21 it loses its appeal.

Well, THEY are pretty busy these days. They put a man on the moon in the 70's and then they came up with LED lights, they built those little spinner things and then they expanded Kinnick stadium seating. All this and they repair streets in the summer, they won't answer when I call and they always call me and hang up, as if that isn't enough, they built new touch screen / card swipe point of sale devices and now they have every kind of coffee. On top of it all, now they have single serving coffee makers. They even have sponsors for podcasts now.

You obviously pic and choose. Some of us have different experience with alcohol than others. Death is a serious subject.

I would say nicotine is 100% mind altering since its clearly addictive. Easily obtainable over the counter at a gas station at 18 years of age.

The reason the drinking age was increased to 21 was MADD campaigned heavily on it and the federal government tied it to highway budgets. They didn't care about cigarettes at the time so they just left it alone. So one drug is 18 and the drug is 21. because logic.

You have to be 21 to buy smokes in Evanston now.
