TX QB Peyton Mansell Likes What He Sees, Hears on Iowa Visit

Sounds like a great kit, but shouldn't we be aiming a little higher?
Sounds to me like Greg "Vito" Davis is setting up a "Texas Mafia" in Iowa City. Another season like last year and I could see the Hawkeyes getting even better recruits out of the Lone Star state, especially if the Longhorns don't improve. Looks like the Davis pipeline took longer materialize than many thought but it might start producing five years in.

Not saying Mansell is going to be C.J. Beathard, but after CJB basically had his offer pulled by Ole Miss when Hugh Freeze arrived, he held offers from Tulane and SMU before we rolled in late.

Did a QB from North Dakota State go #2 overall in this last NFL draft? What was his offer sheet and ranking coming out of high school as I do not know? What I do know is he was drafted higher than Hackenberg, Connor Cook & Cardelle Jones.

Mansell is Iowa's #1 QB target. They have evaluated a lot of QB's, watched them all throw in person, and he is atop of Iowa's want list (over Fields).

Only time will tell if Davis and Iowa are right on this one, but to say we should be "aiming higher" is just a silly notion. You scout the kids, and the one who is best to you think is best, or who you think has the highest upside is who you then go after.

When I first looked at Mansell he was 2 stars, (now I see 3). That was the basis of my comment. Obviously the coaches see something in him they like.

After reading a bit about him he certainly has many attributes that Iowa looks for outside of just his athletic ability........leadership qualities, academics, etc. He may well be our #1 target at QB now but that wasn't the case not too long ago as offers went out to Fields and Lombardi several months earlier as we know.

Maybe a blessing in disguise as it has played out? Time will tell.

The offers went out based on film. Iowa follows that up with visits to the school in which Davis watches them throw. After Davis visited Fields and Mansell, IOWA cooled on Fields and Mansell become Iowa's #1 target.

Just because Iowa identifies a player later doesn't mean they wan them more. Iowa obviously want Mansell more than Fields as this point, only time will tell if they are right on this assessment.

Can you link to more info on Fields? not a lot of recruiting data on HN

Nothing really to link, just info from pay sites, and tweets from Eno. Mansell is our #1 QB target, and everything shifted that way after Davis went to watch him throw and offered him on the spot.

I'm pretty comfortable with the fact that the Iowa coaches seemed to have done their homework on Peyton. They have more hits than misses on offering less highly rated players.

What does that mean exactly? Iowa isn't going to go into Texas and get a QB who is offered by Texas, Baylor, Texas A&M. Not going to happen. Doesn't matter if Iowa goes 12-0 again.

Iowa/Davis liked what they saw out of Mansell, and offered him. Of course, it would be great to have all 5-star recruits like Alabama. But I would like to have $20M, just wishing something doesn't make it so.

Iowa's strategy for QB's has been sound. Look for qualities in guys you have a chance to get, target them early and go get them. Stanley has a very good skill set in the '16 class, and Mansell looks to have a similar skill set to Beathard. It doesn't mean both of them will be good, or even 1 of them. But get them on campus, learn the offense and see if they can become good.
