I think biggest bust may be t smith, but only because he will likely draw double coverage until another threat emerges. Losing duzey may hurt him

biggest surprise in my opinion will be d line. I think we might get after it better than expected and I expect Nelson to really make noise at de.

if the defense is awesome, that will be great - because the last couple years they have been anything but.

Andrew Stone will be a nice surprise in addition to the strong defence.

I won't pick a bust, since there aren't many positions getting that much positive hype in the first place. Biggest pleasant surprise will be Brandon Snyder. I've been saying for months that he'll win the other safety spot, and he's been generating some positive buzz.

I'm leaning towards Jay Scheel making a splash this year. I think the receiving corp needs a play maker and I think he's got a little DJK to his game. (just on the field) I also think Jon Weisnewski may be ready to make some plays and with Duzey missing some time it may help him.

As far as disappointing goes (and by no means am I rooting for it) I'll lean towards the combo of CJ and Boone Myers... I think we still don't know how good CJ is or isn't yet and if Myers isn't up to the challenge it'll only make CJs job that much tougher...

Well they were not awesome in 2014 for the same reason they were awesome in 2013, the linebackers. So I disagree with you, the 2013 defense smothered ISU and Minny, may have shutout Mich in the 2nd half (and one Mich TD I think was by their defense), they really controlled Nebby and abdullah. the 2013 defense had top 20 national stats IIRC. They did not quite have the shutdown mode on NIU in the opener but that was a top 15 team. That 2013 defense only gave up 26 points to MSU when the offense could not do much and they really shutdown jNW at 10 points.

Those 3 NFL caliber Sr linebackers, the emergence of King, and the Dee Line being better was huge, if they had a couple top safeties I think they win one or two more games, probably NIU and maybe OSU if the safeties make some plays against the QB.

T Smith seems to get that wide receiver angst when he doesnt get the ball enough so your point about being double teamed is interesting.

But I think Kittle, K-Coble, and some new TEs like Wisnewski I think is name is should still give enough talented TE targets to occupy the safeties.

And if Vandeberg and another receiver be just above avg on the other side of the field then doubling T Smith may be difficult (they may have to double by playing a linebacker underneath).

Simple bust-key, if the Off line cant pass block then they will be the bust, which leads to poor passing and leads to 8 men in the box again and just average running.

T Smith get angst when he doesnt get the ball? Give me a break. He had 40 catches in 13 games last year. That's like 3 catches per game. Not exactly a ball hog who is used to being targeted on every series.

But I see the frustration SMith shows sometimes on the field. Maybe I said it wrong, maybe angst that he is not getting the ball to help the team.

I think T Smith is a very good receiver and I think he is a team player. I just saw an interview of him and he sounds like a great teammate.

When the offense isnt quite clicking T Smith wants the ball, I think that is great, I just hope he doesnt get so annoyed if the opponents double him that he gets 'down'.

If Beathard is a bust the Iowa football team will be in trouble. It will be interesting to see if the offensive line can give him protection.

Biggest surprise: Bo Bower

He was in position last year to make a lot of big plays and more times than not he didn't come through. I think with the experience and the added weight he turns the corner.


Biggest bust: CJB

And it may not even be his fault. This offense has the recipe for disaster written all over it. I can easily see him trying to do too much.

I think the biggest surprise will be that our two new starting tackles, with some growing pains early, are going to be very good. Both of these guys are athletic, major plus, and have now got the size required to play the position. It's all about technique and reps now and it's comforting to know that Boone won't face too many guys, if any, as good as Ott is right now. Ott will likely get drafted in the first 4 rounds...or higher if he has a great senior year. With the experience we have inside, if these two can hold their own, our offensive line could become a strength. I'm in the camp that our o-line was pretty damn good last year, and the RB position was so subpar that we didn't get what we should have out of most of the inside and outside zone running plays. When you don't have a D1 tailback, you can't control the game like we should have against most teams. It was crucial to have a tailback that could put pressure on the defense and not require our linemen to hold their blocks for several seconds...we needed more than a seam with our backs last year.

I agree with GrandpaHawk...punting is our bust. I didn't see anything last year that showed these guys can consistently perform...and I'm hoping someone else shows in fall camp.

Biggest surprise: Akrum Wadley, A Daniels and Derrick Mitchell, the Hawkeye running game.

Biggest bust: The whiners, who gave up on the Hawkeye football program
