Two-Deep for Wyoming

If Kirk could change the rules on punt returns to an automatic fair-catch I believe he'd do it. He values sure-handeness there over speed and breakaway ability.

This little rant is titled: OUR FANS

Our fans think everything is binary.

Like if you're a WR you can either block or catch, but not both.
Or if you have sure hands you have no speed.

Our fans rarely consider athletes can do more than one thing. Our fans are not the sharpest tool in the shed.

I was surprised to see Easley listed over Devonte Young, and to see Smith listed on the 2 deep when most of the talk on freshman receivers seemed to focus on ISM and Cooper since camp started. Which receiver(s) do you think are most poised for a breakout yet between Easley, Young, Falconer, Quarrels, Smith, ISM and Cooper?

Rob, one correction on your write-up...

Geno Stone is actually the backup at FS, with Hooker the backup at SS. That threw me for a loop at first as well as Stone had been backing up Taylor at the SS spot at Kids Day, but that's not how the 2 deeps read....

I was thinking Cook would make the 2 deep at Tight End, but nope.
I sure wasn't... I hadn't heard of any buzz about him climbing the chart. The guy I thought might though was the senior from WDM Wisnewski. I figured since he's healthy and good to go he might but he's even behind Pekar and Wieting

The other thing I was thinking in relation to the receiver grouping....

Brandon Smith, with his unusually large hands and his 6'9" high jump should be able to highpoint just about anyone on redzone jump balls, so I wonder if that had a lot to do with his inclusion there as #2 at SE. I can't wait to see him utilized there.

With ISM, I wonder if it was just a matter of Young maybe being just as effective of a deep threat and then having the ability, as a much bigger receiver, to take on safeties and other DBs in the running game as the deciding factor in getting the #2 spot over him....

Actually, Gholston is behind Brinks which means he is not yet executing the position correctly because he is a talent. Much more concerned about that to be honest.

What's wrong with Parker Hesse?

I am as excited about AJ as anyone - but I certainly won't be steaming faced mad if he's not starting over a guy who's a junior and has 20 + starts. I think Hesse is pretty solid... guess I must be in the minority

What's really interesting about Hesse and A. Nelson, is that it usually takes a couple of years for DE's to really become great pass rushers. This should be a break out year for both of them. Think about Drew Ott, he didn't really become a disruptive force until his junior year...as far as pass rush anyway. So, you have two guys who are physically ready and a freak who is pushing them for playing time. I like it. Based on what I heard...Simon is a terror rushing the passer too. It will be interesting to see if he sees some third downs too. Good problems all.

Congrats to Cole Banwart to for earning the #2 spot at center! He's one of the next in line of the lightly recruited small town Iowa kids that works so hard to make himself a good college football player. Expect him to compete for a starting spot on the line next year.

I watch or attend every single game. However I have never really watched or tracked how much playing time being on the two deeps correlates too. Rob or anyone on this thread have a percentage or avg. minutes projection for 2nd stringers?

I know some positions will only have the first stringer play but I know they rotate a lot of players and specific positions.

with eleven listed fr. or redshirt fr. we have a very young team here. Quite a few soph. too...WOW...

Anyone know how good Wyomings OL is? I think the key to this game is our ability to pressure the QB.
Unfortunately, depth charts are limited when it comes to ability. :)

This is interesting:

1. Brandon Smith is the one freshman WR to crack the two deeps. Interesting considering the things we were hearing about ISM and Cooper from camp.

2. Matt Quarrels already making noise by getting in as an "OR" at 2nd team WR.

3. Alaric Jackson and Wirfs are the backup OTs....both backing up seniors. If that holds, could be looking at bookend starting tackles for the next 3 years.

4. Matt Nelson officially at DT.

5. Mends beats out Jones for 2nd team weakside LB

6. Recinos beats out Duncan and Rastetter beats out the scholarship punter Gersonde

7. Really like seeing Wadley and IKM at kick returner, but would have like to have seen someone more explosive at PR like we did with Desmond last year.

I'm excited about Smith. I liked his recruiting story and it really sounded like the Hawks found a diamond in the rough. I was kind of disappointed that his name never really had come up much until all of a sudden he's a two deep.

I guess I'm mostly intrigued by the fact that M. Nelson didn't get the nod at one of the d-line spots, after starting all 13 games last season. I can't remember....has he been dinged up during camp?

He'll be the 5th DL in there I think. He'll probably play some DE giving Anthony breathers. But I think mostly he'll be rotating inside with the DTs. Don't worry he'll be playing a ton too. Hesse and AJE will be at the other DE spot it'll be interesting to see how their PT is split up.

Nothing that I'm aware of. But there has been talk of Iowa fielding 4 DE's at the same time in certain situations. PH would slide inside, in that configuration. That's what I've heard. Will have to see if it actually happens. I think it would be both Nelson, Hesse and AJ. But, I think AJ may play inside, also, on a fairly regular basis.

Nelson broke his foot during spring ball and I think he was fairly limited in summer workouts and even the beginning of fall camp while he recovered. He'll get plenty of PT, though, as the 3rd DT in the rotation behind Lattimore and Bazata.
