Two-Deep for Wyoming

This is interesting:

1. Brandon Smith is the one freshman WR to crack the two deeps. Interesting considering the things we were hearing about ISM and Cooper from camp.

2. Matt Quarrels already making noise by getting in as an "OR" at 2nd team WR.

3. Alaric Jackson and Wirfs are the backup OTs....both backing up seniors. If that holds, could be looking at bookend starting tackles for the next 3 years.

4. Matt Nelson officially at DT.

5. Mends beats out Jones for 2nd team weakside LB

6. Recinos beats out Duncan and Rastetter beats out the scholarship punter Gersonde

7. Really like seeing Wadley and IKM at kick returner, but would have like to have seen someone more explosive at PR like we did with Desmond last year.

I wonder if Kieth Duncan screwed up his accuracy by trying to extend his distance. Or it may just be a sign how much Recinos has improved.

I don't think it's as much what Duncan didn't do this camp as what Recinos did. Apparently the ball is just exploding off his foot and he's driving it to the goal posts.

Given the 2-deeps at WR, I expect Young or Quarrels to start by mid season to give Iowa a field-stretcher starting there.

Good situation at OT, the depth should get very good there by mid season.

At PR, BF is obviously going with the sure hands vs the playmaker. But Vandeberg is quicker than he seems- at least he was before the injury.

Gotta think Brandon Smith must block better than the other freshman...
Yup yup.. But him being able to win the 50/50 battles with DBs could be another be it in the redzone or not. With some of the hype he's had I'm glad to see he's where he is.
Don't worry about AJE. He'll play a ton... I feel like the more he's out there the tougher it'll be to take him off the field...

Good thoughts. Regarding the bolded, I don't think we should sell MVB short. Up until his injury last year, he was leading the team in explosive plays. Several years ago Kennedy was quoted as saying he might be the fastest one in the WR room (a room that contained two 4.3 guys in T. Smith and McCarron). If healthy (big IF), I think he could be a weapon here. Now Desmond King left some pretty big shoes to fill, but outside of Wadley, I am not sure who could fill them better than MVB, and I would guess Wadley doesn't have the same hands that MVB has.

Or is it a similar deal as last yr? I hadn't heard if Recinos is THE kicker for everything or just the longer ones.

If Kirk could change the rules on punt returns to an automatic fair-catch I believe he'd do it. He values sure-handeness there over speed and breakaway ability.

With AJE's ability to play inside or out, I like having him to sub in where the opponent's OL is weak to his athleticism. Havoc will be wrought!

MVB has football speed. Whatever that 'it' is that Jerry Rice kinda had. He may not wow you in shorts and a Tshirt against a stop watch but he can sure play WR. Hope he's healthy and can stay that way.

It doesn't sound like he'll be inside much to start. They wanted to cut his learning curve down allowing him to stay at where he's already comfy at. Just turn the animal loose and let him play. I think they will be moving Hesse inside in those kind of situations. But maybe that's just all talk. We'll know more Saturday!!!

I'll really be impressed if, in his first game as OC, Brian Ferentz is able to pull off putting all 12 of his first stringers on the field without a penalty. If he does that, then I know we're on to something.

I also like his size. I can remember Hillyer getting several PI calls (in our favor) whenever he tried to high-point the football.

As far as people wanting AJ to start . . . he'll get plenty of snaps. We want the coaches to get ALL the talent some snaps, by doing so everyone stays fresh and when injuries occur the back-ups are ready to go.

... and he's probably right. Besides a pick 6 one of the worst plays in football is a fumbled punt or kick-off return.
