Turning Point in the Illinois Game

Really have to go back to the intentional foul on May when Iowa was down 8.
It looked like a silly freshman mistake by Richmond grabbing May and giving Iowa 2 FTs and the ball.

Instead, Eric misses both FTs and then Iowa promptly turns it over. Illinois comes down and drills a trey. That's a possible 8 point swing there. Instead of a 3 or 4 point game (at best), it's now an 11 point game.

A lot of missed opportunities in the game last night. Other than that, you have to like the reserve in this team, regardless of W/L. When Iowa got down 19, I really expected the lead to stay in the 15-20 point range for Illinois. Give Iowa credit, they battled and got it back down to single digits a couple times following a couple daggers from McCamey.

Agree, huge gift to the Illini, no free throws and then a turnover, but Illinois shot lights out, too many 3's but the kids played hard and I love the new tempo and the announcers saying recruits want to play for the Hawkeyes.

I agree! We had about 2 or 3 times where we could have really seized momentum and we either turned it over or missed free throws and then they hit a couple 3's.

Totally agree. It's also hard to believe that if he "hold" them to 50% from 3-pt range that we win the game. I like this team and the future is bright.

Defense and free throws were the key to this loss for Iowa.
The start of the second half, Illinois was getting some really easy shots.
I thought our perimeter defense was slow and really needs attention.
Free throws...Every player under 70% should be shooting 100-125 free throws per day. Either in the morning before a game or after practice on their own.
I really like this team and the development of the young players will really be fun to watch.
Overall I like Fran's style and intensity, we are a young team with a new coach, there will be growing pains and youthful mistakes. As long as the team is better at the end of the season, than it is even now. I will have no complaints!

They also should be making sure to be shooting their practice free throws in the middle of workouts/running to get a game-type feel. Big difference in shooting them tired.

I think once this team can force the tempo to a quick pace against good teams, is when I think they have turned the corner. I think it's going to take at least a full season for this team to drop the bad habits it had under TL. Their are times when it looks like they are still a TL coached team. It's hard to break bad habits.

Still don't get not guarding the 3 in the first half. Also, this team needs to spend an hour of each practice working on free throw shooting.

The probability of Iowa encountering another team that is shooting the 3 that well is very low. The Hawks were in that game, but FT shooting was a definite problem. Not only did it keep them from closing the gap, but it stopped momentum several times.

Is this the worst FT shooting team Iowa has ever had? In recent memory it seems like it.

Although, I haven't watched much the last few years so I'm probably not a good one to ask.

Agree 100%, and the missed freebies were a problem all night. I don't know what Iowa ended up shooting from the stripe, but I'd bet that it was less than 50%.

There was also a sequence a little bit later when Gatens had an open three, didn't take it, took a couple steps to where he would have had an open 15 footer and didn't take it, and then tried to make a pass to the baseline and threw it out of bounds.

In regards to FT shooting, McCaffery did mention they shoot a ton of FTs in practice.

I believe he said they have been shooting more FT's in practice than any team in the country!

May missing 3 out of 4 free throws in a short span of time killed our momentum. Not saying Iowa would have won, but that was the dagger right there.

I thought Marble played his best game of the season, but that missed free throw that would've put us within 5 with only a few min to play was crucial.

Marble is sneaky quick. He has long arms to, can't remember how many times he came close to getting in the passing lane. Marble isn't afraid to shoot the ball or even take it to the hoop.

It was a shame that they lost that game last night. You can't beat 80% shooting though.
Didn't see the first half but the "highlights" showed Illinois getting these wide open looks. They didn't get those same looks as much in the second half but they STILL shot over 70% for the game. I don't know if I've even ever heard of a team shooting 80% from the arc.

I love his on-the-court demeanor, as well.
Smooth operator. Just a real scorer.
He'll be the most skilled player of the three froshes when he is a senior.

He really does have a sneaky inside game with his length.
Bill Jones type. Looks a bit awkward but is effective.

But,yes, when trying to rally like the Hawks, missed free throws are rally-stoppers.
Fran said Eric is impeccable in practice,as is Mel,and some others...they will get it down in games eventually,I hope.

But, no doubt, 13 of 18 from three is about the best I have ever heard of in Div 1 college ball. We let Cole get those clean looks early, along with Richardson, and McCamey and they got in a great rythmn...moral of the story...do not let them get in a groove early..guard them like the 2nd half and they never explode like that...Cole and Richardson have been in shooting slumps and were fragile...if they miss early...who knows?

I feel Fran may be putting too much of an emphasis on free throws at practice. What I mean by this is the guys are scared crapless to miss them in game so it's a really bad head game. Instead of telling them they can't miss free throws maybe Fran needs to tell them they WILL make them so to just chill.

You have to put a body on the three point shooter. Almost come out too far to get them out of the groove. Im not saying foul the jump shooter, just overplay him if you have to. Anything to get them out of the groove. The 7 in a row killed Iowa.
