Trump supporters, how do you square this?

So now it is fully out that there were feds there on Jan 6th. That means at a bare minimum they knew in advance it was going to happen and let it for political gain. At a maximum they helped make it happen. Even if you're still a firm believer that everyone there should still be charged (I think everyone who did anything violent should be) it has to be eye opening to know the government would allow something like that to take place.

39% of Des Moines students are chronically absent

Headline from the DMR

Serious problem, the uneducated can also vote, obviously

Probably a parent issue, my children were dropped off at school every day they weren't sick
Wow. That's alarming. Yes, I believe it is a parent problem, but I also know that educators and staff are really hand tied when it comes to enforcing anything with kids anymore. They don't want to get sued and they don't want to enforce and/or hold any kids back anymore due to the percentage numbers they want to achieve. Some kids are left behind the system secondary to the emphasis put on numbers and funding from the states. Kid's aren't held accountable AT ALL anymore and THEY know it, which is a bad formula.

You are right.
The Democratic Party was not savvy enough to find a candidate to defeat the biggest joke ever elected..twice, for God’s sake. Their leadership is useless.

Yeah, teachers should have the RIght to teach and discipline the unruly

Those creating problems for the teacher and are depriving the other students from a learning
experience should be removed from the classroom

I am not certain what the answer is...

Do you think Trump and his administration will allow the government to study gun violence as a major public health threat (new school shooting with deaths at a Christian school in Madison, WI today). Or, are the lobbyists on K street gonna tell us to say Thoughts and Prayers, and take the money?

I think I know the answer. SAD!

Do you mean study the cause of gun violence? I think that's something Kennedy will push hard.

I hope so. Definitely have my doubts. Doesn't fit the political agenda of the far right.
Doing a study that proves it "isn't the guns" is exactly what the right would like to do. The problem is there's also very powerful people who want all the blame on the guns.

If I remember right, Rogan and Vance talked about gun violence and the possible connection to pharmaceuticals. Vance seemed pretty interested.

I don't think comparing Trump to prior fascist dictators convinces any trump supporter to move away from him. We are so desensitized by Godwin's Law: for the last 2 decades, we have fairly consistently heard Bush, Obama, and Trump all compared to Hitler. Further, we envision Nazi Germany as this monstrosity that could never happen again, the German citizens as either horrifically racist or inconceivably gullible. We are not like that.

Guess what? Neither were those Germans prior to being led to that state by a charismatic leader who preached nationalism, grievance, and a common enemy they could focus their hatred upon. I really do NOT think we will become Nazi Germany, I think we have enough guard rails in place and a strong enough counter-balance to Trump's fascist tendencies, and overall most people in this country have it pretty good (much of the grievance is contrived).

But it is hard to not think of the Kristallnacht when Trump starts hammering his mass deportation plan. There are already paramilitary organizations (analogs to the SA, or "brown shirts") working throughout our country to locate illegal immigrants. In a recent speech, Trump said something to the effect of...we have people ready to take care of these immigrants, and they will be allowed to do so (paraphrased). It was not clear if he was talking about US Law Enforcement, Military, or something else, but it certainly could have been taken as a call to arms for these militias (much like his "stand back and stand by" was in 2016).

I am sure this seems hyperbolic to anyone who supports Trump, and I hope it is truly hyperbole. But it is hard to not see parallels.

I hope they do a study (and maybe a study has already been done) which looks into what commonality is driving these mentally sick people to murder. Is it home life? Is it social media? Is it over medication or medication in general? It’s evident there's some sort of mental issue but what is causing the mental insanity?

One scientific fact we all know is guns have been around for hundreds of years, school shootings have not.

Now we're talking. And it's not one study that should be done. It's 100s of them.

Unfortunately, we're way behind on this critical public health emergency. Congress had previously banned federal funding for gun violence research (for 20 years!). OF COURSE that's political. But, there is hope. That ban has been lifted fairly recently:

Of note, most of these mass shooters aren't Schizophrenic or have Bipolar Disorder. There must be something else going on besides an Axis 1 Psychiatric Disorder in many of these cases. Edit: some of these shooters are clearly mentally ill). Having said that,

We do know that most shooters are:
1. Male
2. Young
3. Angry
4 Have some sort of a grievance

You are right. Guns (as well as rates of heritable mental illness) have been with us this whole time. What changed? Why do other societies (which also have plenty of mental illness) have almost zero rates of gun violence???

There are also very powerful people, with no evidence, that will blame it on everything but guns. Joe Rogan is a comedian, not a scientist. JD Vance is a lawyer and a politician.

We should be asking why other countries do not have this problem, while we do? Surely, the 400 Million guns in our country are a factor (with many others). Only a simpleton would think it's just one thing.

The main thing to ask ourselves is "why is this problem almost uniquely American"? If we think it has nothing to do with guns, we should back that up with evidence. Look at what happened in Australia after they made changes to their gun laws.

Interesting

wonder if the ratio of gun violence or lack there of w/ said societies to amount of prescribed or non-prescribed medication is similar to the ratio of gun violence in america to the amount of prescribed or non prescribed medication.

What kind of medication are you referring to? That's a broad topic? Psychiatric medications? Pain medications?

It's an interesting question. Just wondering what you mean by medications.

I don’t know honestly. I think it needs to be studied and a question that should be asked. I for one think our country is so over medicated. We have a pill for anything and everything.
