Well, that just isn't true at all.
So are you saying, if you are the ref 40 feet out, you believe you would have a better view and perspective that a player was touched than a ref from 3 feet? Sure sounds that way.
Isn't that UNBELIEVABLE cmonhox? Sounds like we have a couple HOT SHOT refs out there, that can make a call from where ever they are at. Coaches get really, really ticked off at those kinds of officials and this guy is all about getting calls right??? Sounds like he is all about making all of the calls himself. He might as well roll SOLO!
You can't say yes or no to that. Because each situation is different, the angle you are at is different. Could it happen yes. It might not be a matter of me seeing something more as someone missing. I don't see everything. I can just as easily see a foul in front and miss a foul in front of me. So, yes it can happen.
So now you are saying that you can see calls from the stands better than on the court?? WOW!! And now you are saying that you have a better angle at a call 40 feet away from the play than an official 2 feet from the play? WOW!! Man, I hope that I never, ever officiate with you.

1. I was 30 rows behind the Wisconsin bench, and I would have called a foul there.
2. My kids spilled a bucket of popcorn right in front of me, and I couldn't tell for sure how it happened. The guy 2 rows behind me gave me the details a little while later. Was he wrong?
You're working under a likely misguided assumption that the ref making the travelling call saw everything that happened in great detail as it happened. That is not always the case, and to argue other wise is ludicrous.

Just from reading these comments I can tell you right now I would much rather have duffman and Hawk101 officiating any game I am playing or watching. And I've never seen any one of them officiate before (well I might have, but it would have had to have been about 6 years ago).

Ha! No wonder he is used to making calls from 40 ft away! But in all seriousness, it DOES happen when the other official, 40 ft away, can see the call better. It's called an angle. Say a player gets around someone and the defender swipes from around his back trying to "pick him". The ref close to him might be on the other side, and therefore can't see if he hits his arm or the ball. A ref 40 ft away might be able to see the whole thing.
He isn't saying that he can see the game "better" from the stands or "better" from 40 ft away, he is saying that sometimes he can see a certain call that the closer ref might not see too clearly. The closer ref may think he made the correct call, but as we all know, basketball is ridiculously hard to officiate. For him to think he was correct just because he is closer is absurd.

So if the official 40 feet from the play was looking 40 feet from his "area", who saw the big time shove to another player 2 feet from that official's area? Oh that's right, you were more worried about watching the ball 40 feet from you than everything that is happening 2 feet from you. (That is the cardinal sin of officiating) Or are you so good that you can see the entire court? If that is the case, why have 3 officials out there? Do you not trust that your partner 40 feet from you, will have the correct call?

What is funny if you look at the picture that photohawk posted(nice work by the way) is that the official that made the call is standing on the sideline and has a perfect angle of the contact. The official that supposedly had this "great" angle is on the baseline so the Wisconsin player is blocking his view of the contact. Cartwright is behind him. The better angle nonsene doesn't hold water. Case closed.

To me, they are nearly facing the sideline. And while the contact seems to be on the back, it looks as though its on the complete opposite side of the close official. So that official may have missed the contact completely, just might not have seen it. OR, just MAYBE, he didn't make the right call! Could it be?
